This Baniwa Shamanic Revitalization was undertaken at the specific invitation of the Baniwa people and Mandu, who is in his eighties, and his family, who wish to preserve and pass on the shamanic knowledge of their people. Dr. Robin Wright, FSS Field Associate, who brought this project to our attention, has been working with the Baniwa for years to help them achieve this goal. When Dr. Wright returned from the inauguration of the Shamans' House, he said: "The initial goals of our project were fully realized. The Shamans' House of Knowledge is a beautiful construction, marvelous architecture that is like the Baniwa people's view of the cosmos materialized. They performed dances which I had never seen before - we filmed them all. Best of all, there is now a large group of apprentices (12) to the two head shamans. This revitalization project can be credited for having been responsible for that. This is not the end of the project by any means, but just the beginning; the ...

To make East Parkside homes more energy efficient, more durable and more affordable to own, thanks to BASF chemistry. Habitat for Humanity designed the project's first seven homes to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification from the US Green Building Council. Attaining LEED Silver certification verifies that the homes offer environmental and social benefits such as dramatic reductions in energy use and sound transfer between homes. The January 2009 utility bills for one of the families totaled just $50. For more information visit: construction.basf.us

UB Downtown Expansion Tied to Revitalization Plan The Oak-Michigan Housing Development Corp. and St. John Fruit Belt Development Corp. are planning a $500 million East Side development plan, which will be a catalyst for economic development and improvement in quality of life in one of Buffalo's poorest neighborhoods. Success is contingent on the University at Buffalo implementing the UB 2020 plan to develop its Downtown Campus. In conjunction with the plan, the UB Foundation Inc. has reached an agreement with the Oak-Michigan Housing Development Corp., a not-for-profit housing development corporation of St. John Baptist Church, to purchase the McCarley Gardens subsidized housing complex on the south side of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus so that UB can use the land for expansion of its Downtown Campus, including relocation of the five health sciences schools in its Academic Health Center. It is anticipated that all conditions for sale of the property, which is contingent on US Department of Housing and Urban Development approval, will be met by 2017. Read more at www.buffalo.edu

The mansions of PT Barnum's time had fallen into decay until tax credits became available in 1996. Soon after, 10 city houses were renovated in a plan follwing a college student's urban planning project. That, along with $5 million and a lot of hard work. The renovation had to include afforadable housing.

Historic Theater Leads Neighborhood Revitalization National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis talks about the Historic Preservation Tax Incentives in a new NPS video. Director Jarvis visited the Atlas Theater in Washington, DC, to highlight how the incentives revitalize abandoned and deteriorated buildings and spark economic opportunity in communities. The Streamline Deco-style theater is located in the area of the city that was heavily damaged during the riots that erupted after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968. The theater's patronage declined after the riot. A $22 million rehabilitation has returned the theater to life as a performing arts center. The theater's rehabilitation was the key to turning around the "H Street Corridor," a community revitalization that is so successful that city residents now refer to the area as the "Atlas District."

The "smart growth" agenda — aimed at reviving the district's neighborhoods as places of choice — has three core goals: pursuit of a fully inclusive planning process involving the city, residents, and community groups; introduction of new amenities and housing to attract the university community back to the district; and promotion of social equity by improving quality of life and economic opportunity for all residents. Campus Partners has leveraged more than $150 million in investment in district neighborhoods, including renovation and development of roughly 1000 housing units of Section 8, affordable, and market-rate housing; redevelopment of a large brownfield site; a new police station; new public elementary school; and OSU's new early-childhood learning center.
