Are Flame Retardants Harming Frogs? To the high school biology student, the northern leopard frog is the dissection specimen that first revealed the secrets of animal anatomy. To the modern scientist, it can be a sentinel, a harbinger of poor environmental health— especially in the river regions that flow into the Great Lakes. In Dr. William Karasov's lab, the frog is front and center in a series of research experiments, funded in part by the UW Sea Grant Institute, designed to explore how environmental toxins may be affecting the frog's immune system, growth and development. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers—PBDEs for short—are toxic compounds used as flame retardants that have been found in significant concentrations in the Great Lakes region. Karasov, professor and chair of the UW-Madison's Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, and Tawnya Cary, a first-year PhD student, have fed northern leopard frog tadpoles a prepared diet that includes a static level of PBDEs from birth until metamorphosis, the point at which the frog's forelimbs begin to emerge. Their goal is to measure the potential effect of PBDEs on survival, growth rate and the amount of time it takes for the tadpole to develop into a frog. "These contaminants can create a situation where animals can suffer direct effects, and also weaken their immune systems, making them vulnerable to other pathogens in the environment," explains Karasov. He points to situations where large groups of dead frogs have been found by naturalists in the wild. "We ...

FnaticMSI vs Flame Retardant - ECL3 Grand Final - Final Map - XLNC POV I know the title is a little bit long but there was a lot to include lol :) FnaticMSI had previously beat Flame Retardant 3-1 and so they only needed to win 2 games in the final whereas, Flame Retardant needed to win 4. Both teams took 1 map each and thanks to Swizz, Candy and RnB, I was lucky enough to get a front row seat where I could record the whole final map. XLNC had played much better in other maps but there was a really nice part where he got a two piece followed by a turn on (kind of) 5-10 seconds later. (4:43 - 4:58) Hope you all enjoy!

2. In-depth: Problems with Brominated Flame Retardants and PVC This second ChemSec short film about the EU RoHS directive takes a closer look at the problems with using brominated flame retardants and PVC in electronics, among other things stressing that brominated flame retardants and PVC can transform into dioxins and furans, which for example can cause cancer. This film also the emphasises the growing problem with electronic waste and highlights the risks with only restricting individual brominated flame retardants instead of the whole group. Fire'z Off Demo - 'Green' Fire Retardant - RDR Technologies Fire'z Off is an all-natural, plant-based flame retardant, effective on preventing flame spread and smoke development on most paper, fabric and wood. Fire'z Off is an environmentally-friendly fire retardant which is used to retard fire in all Class A materials, such as drapes, wall hangings, furniture, boxes and packing materials, fabrics and uniforms, even construction materials. Unlike many products on the market today, it is specially formulated to be non-toxic, with no PBDE's or neurotoxins that can cause long-term damage to humans or the environment. Fire'z Off forms a thermal insulation barrier that prevents dangerous flames form spreading. Fire'z Off also inhibits the development of toxic hydrocarbon smoke. And it is safe enough that it can be applied while people are present. It will remain effective until it is washed out. It can even be mixed with latex paint to prevent flame spread. Just spray it on and let dry. You can also dip fabrics, wring them out and let air dry. In this clip, we've treated several samples of paper towel, canvas cloth and balsa wood to demonstrate how Fire'z Off helps prevent flames from spreading. For more information, visit http:/

California Wildfires 2008 - MAFFS Retardant Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve C-130H aircraft equipped with the modular airborne firefighting system (MAFFS) are deploying lines of retardant with high levels of precision. The retardant allows firefighters on the ground to more effectively contain wildfires throughout California. The red coloring allows aircrews and ground firefighters to see where the retardant has been dropped. This makes any gaps in the retardant lines easily visible. With time, the red color fades away. Advanced Fire Retardant Coating Paper Cardboard box . http NEW FIRE INHIBITING AGENT AS A PROPHYLACTIC PROTECTION AGAINST FIRE OUTBREAK. 1. Prevents flame formation 2. Outstanding fire defence 3. Can be used on all cultivations 4. Environmental friendly 5. Easy to handle There are known fire-inhibiting agents, which in a low-viscosity aqueous solution contain, amongst other substances, a phosphate. The action of fire-inhibiting agents of this type is that of intumescences, meaning the effect of fire-repelling foam on the outbreak of fire. Phosphates are hence used for the purpose of supporting the carbonization, but not as the primary means of fire prevention. Phosphoric compounds with epoxy resin mixtures containing fire-inhibiting substances are subject to incessant criticism in that they do not provide sufficiently sustained protection against fire. The addition of wetting agents with a special binding effect (patented) has proven successful in binding the crystal which forms on drying; thereby creating a thin enveloping coating of the phosphate medium and substantially improves the resistance to fire. The new fire-inhibiting agent has the great advantage of being explicitly friendly to the environment. Phosphates are fertilizers, and should not be dispersed in nature, amongst other reasons beause they contaminate the water. When Fire Protection AllInOne is used outdoors, the protective film it forms is washed off by rain or melted snow into the ground only moderately, or not at all, so that natural growth ...
