Who Needs College Anyway? Remarks by Charles Murray President Obama set an ambitious new goal in his speech to Congress on February 24, 2009, proclaiming that by 2020, America will ...have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. But some experts, like author Charles Murray, dont think we need more Americans going to college. In his new book, Real Education: Four Simple Truths for Bringing Americas Schools Back to Reality (Random House, 2008), Murray argues that Americans place too much value on the bachelors degree. Murray and researcher Anthony Carnevale debated Who Needs a College Education Anyway? at the Hechinger Institutes Seminar for Higher Education Reporters in December 2008. Scott Jaschik of Inside Higher Ed moderated the debate. Murray, the WH Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, contends that because ability varies and 50 percent of people are below average, our current system of higher education makes little sense. Carnevale, Research Professor and Director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, argues we should encourage as many students as possible to attend and graduate from college, because intelligence isnt fixed at birth and can be influenced by education. After their remarks, Murray and Carnevale took questions from journalists participating in the Seminar.

Speaker Boehner's Remarks on Resolution Condemning the Attack in Tucson, AZ House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) delivered remarks on the House floor today during consideration of a resolution condemning the tragic shooting in Tucson, AZ and honoring the victims. Following are Speaker Boehner's remarks as prepared for delivery: "Today, we are called here to mourn. An unspeakable act of violence has taken six innocent lives, and left several more -- including our colleague, Gabrielle Giffords -- battling for theirs. These are difficult hours for our country. "Among the fallen is Gabe Zimmerman, a member of Congresswoman Giffords' staff ... a public servant of the highest caliber ... one of our own. "Even in our shock, we are composed and determined to fulfill our calling to represent our constituents. This is the great cause for which Gabe gave his life. Like us, Gabe swore on oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. At the time of the attack, he was engaged in the most simple and direct of democratic rituals: listening to the people ... to his neighbors. "The brutality that shattered Saturday morning's calm was devastating, but brief. Bravery and quick thinking prevented a massacre, turning innocent bystanders into heroes. The service and skill of first responders and medical professionals saved lives. Law enforcement officials are working to ensure swift justice. Look to Tucson right now, and you will be reminded that America's most plentiful source of wealth and strength is her people. "We are so thankful Gabby is still with us. We are so ...

Ronnie O'Sullivan making suggestive remarks Making suggestive remarks to Chinese journalists, at the press conference after losing to Marco Fu in the China Open. Undoubtedly a great snooker player and certainly the most entertaining (in my opinion) but it appears here that he can't handle the attention that comes with the job. No doubting his talent but some question marks over his professionalism perhaps.

Prince Harry's Racist Remarks Towards Fellow Soldier Britain's Prince Harry issued a public apology Saturday after a British newspaper published video footage of him using offensive and racist language. The News of The World reported that Harry, third in line to the British throne, used offensive terms to refer to people from Pakistan and people of Arab descent. Harry, who is an army lieutenant in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals, is purported to have made the remarks in 2006 in an airport departure lounge as soldiers waited to travel to Cyprus for training exercises. The newspaper said in a statement that in the video, Harry referred to one colleague as "our little paki friend" — using a derogatory term for people of Pakistani origin. It reported that he called another cadet — who was wearing a headscarf — a "raghead." The newspaper said that the video was filmed by other cadets and supplied to the newspaper. St. James's Palace — the office of Harry and his elder brother Prince William — said on Saturday that Harry was sorry for any offense caused by his use of the word "paki." "Prince Harry fully understands how offensive this term can be, and is extremely sorry for any offense his words might cause," spokesman Patrick Harrison said in a statement. "However, on this occasion three years ago, Prince Harry used the term without any malice and as a nickname about a highly popular member of his platoon. There is no question that Prince Harry was in any way seeking to insult his friend." Harrison said that Harry had ...
