Role of Regulatory T Cells in Tolerance: Implication in Human Diseases Air date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 3:00:00 PM Timedisplayed is Eastern Time, Washington DC Local Category: Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Description: Cells with regulatory function exist within all major T and NK cell subsets. Most attention has been focused on regulatory T (Tr) cells with a CD4+ phenotype: the naturally occurring Tr (nTreg) cells and the adaptive type 1 Tr (Tr1) cells. These two subsets of Tr cells, which are developmentally and functionally distinct, cooperate in suppressing activation of the immune system and thereby in maintaining immunological homeostasis and inducing tolerance to self and foreign antigens. nTreg cells arise from the thymus and their suppressor function is strictly dependent on high expression of the transcription factor FOXP3, whereas Tr1 cells are induced in the periphery upon chronic stimulation with antigen in the presence of IL-10, secrete high levels of IL-10 in the absence of IL-4, and suppress antigen presenting cells and effector T cells through a cytokine-dependent mechanism. In humans, the presence of Tr1 cells is associated with tolerance, whereas defects in nTreg or Tr1 cells lead to autoimmune mediated diseases or to chronic inflammation, respectively. We and others have dedicated much effort to establish methods to isolate and expand nTreg cells or to induce antigen-specific Tr1 cells ex vivo to be used as cell therapy to promote or rebuilt tolerance. We established a protocol to selectively expand CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ T ...

's Patrick Byrne On Internet Sales Taxes, *** Short Selling & Regulatory Capture Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie sat down recently with Patrick Byrne, the CEO of , the online retailer famous for ***y ads ("It's all about the O"), low, low prices, and hyperattentive customer service. Born in 1962 and now living in Utah, Byrne holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford and serves as the co-chair (with Rose Friedman) of the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice. He is the former manager of Blackhawk Investment, a cancer survivor, and a black belt in tae kwon do. An outspoken critic of online sales taxes, Byrne is a self-declared libertarian who champions short-selling while adamantly opposing the more-controversial practice of "***" short-selling. From his journalistic perch at the blog Deep Capture, he and his colleagues regularly chart the ways in which regulators routinely stifle innovation and maintain a status quo that favors connected firms at the cost of competitors and consumers alike. Raised in New Hampshire, Byrne describes himself as a former "Yankee Republican" who has never felt comfortable with anti-market Democrats and no longer recognizes the GOP as the party of small government and individual liberty. In this 10-minute interview, Byrne explains why school choice is the key issue of our day, how bad regulations contributed to the current economic crisis, and why "the government should pave the roads, run the Post Office, and stay off my porch." Filmed by Dan Hayes and edited by Meredith Bragg.

President Obama Speech on Financial Regulatory Reform President Obama announced the introduction of the new consumer financial protection agency, which will execute a plan for regulation reform that would improve the current "patchwork system" full of outdated regulations and lax oversight that helped lead to last year's crisis," and "stand up, not for big banks, not for financial firms, but for hard-working Americans." Such changes, he says, would prevent consumers becoming victims of "predatory practices of some in the financial industry." "Americans... are counting on us to be their advocates," Obama said. He also commented on those "butcher" ads attacking the agency, saying that it would put small businesses out of businesses. "I don't know how many of your butchers are offering financial services," he says. "We can't let speciail interests win this fight."

The Alex Jones Show 1/3:Ron Paul Exposes Obama's Regulatory (Dictatorial-Powers) Fed Plan! Congressman tells MSNBC that the very entity responsible for the economic crisis is now more powerful than Congress. Responding to the Obama administrations new regulatory reform plan, which will officially hand the Federal Reserve complete dictatorial control over the US economy, Congressman Ron Paul told MSNBC that the Fed was now more powerful than Congress. Paul emphasized that no amount of regulation could compensate for a financial system created and controlled by the Federal Reserve that was completely unstable to begin with. The regulations should be on the Federal Reserve. We should have transparency of the Federal Reserve. They can create trillions of dollars to bail out their friends, and we dont even have any transparency of this. Theyre more powerful than the Congress, said Paul.

Clinuvel's "clinical and regulatory goals" Clinuvel's senior management in regulatory affairs and clinical research discuss the development of Clinuvel's proprietary first-in-class drug, SCENESSE® (afamelanotide). Administered by physicians as a controlled-release resorbable implant, SCENESSE® (afamelanotide) is a preventative drug activating melanin pigmentation in the skin. Melanin provides a biological barrier, protecting skin from UV and visible light. Medically, this is known as photoprotection. SCENESSE® (afamelanotide) is released over 10 days by the implant, while activating melanin for up to 60 days. The breakthrough controlled-release formulation maximizes the effect of the drug, while minimizing patient exposure to drug substance. Clinuvels ongoing clinical program aims to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of afamelanotide as a medicinal photoprotective drug.
