Turkey is preparing to receive more refugees in the east along the 800 km Syrian-Turkish border. Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars ++ Discussion on ++ Directed by Zach Niles and Banker White (USA) The remarkable story of a group of six Sierra Leonean musicians who come together to form a band while living in a West African refugee camp. First-time filmmakers Zach Niles and Banker White started SodaSoap Productions in 2002 in support of their the documentary film 'Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars' (2006). "SodaSoap" comes from the title of an All Stars song that encourages people to take pride in what they can produce on their own. It has become a guiding artistic theme for the duo, who are recipients of a 2008 Creative Capital Foundation Grant for "We Own TV," a collaborative media project that promotes self-expression through visual media by bringing filmmaking education and equipment to Sierra Leonean youth. Project participants will collaboratively create and produce their own independent media which will be distributed via "We Own TV's" broadcast and online partners. Zach and Banker also continue to work closely with their friends "Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars" who, since the release of the film have become international stars and strident advocates for refugee rights. Asian Refugee Caught in "Old White Man" Disguise Canadian officials are demanding a probe into what border guards say was an "unbelievable" security breach that let an Asian man in his early 20s bluff his way aboard a Hong Kong-to-Vancouver flight by disguising himself as an aging white man. The unidentified Asian showed up at Hong Kong International Airport on Oct. 29 and traded boarding passes with a white, 55-year-old American in order to board an Air Canada flight later that night, authorities said. But that doesn't explain how he got past airport passport control or Air Canada officials at the gate, officials in Ottawa said. Investigators suspect he finessed the checkpoints after putting on a silicon head and face mask that made him look like an old white man, complete with glasses, a brown cardigan and a brown leather cap. Canadian media said such masks go for about $1000 on the Internet. But to get aboard he had to show a valid passport and a Hong Kong Departure Card, given to visitors upon arrival. The only ID he was known to have was an Air Canada frequent-flier credit card, prompting suspicion he also got a US passport from his accomplice. In any event, he boarded the 6:10 pm flight and took his seat. Hours later, above the Pacific, he removed his disguise in a lavatory and hid it in a carry-on. North Korean Refugees October 2007 They risk all trying to make it across the North Korean border to China, only to find no guarantee of a better life. At constant risk of being deported, these refugees live a half life in the shadows. "I thought if I came to China life would be better", laments one woman. "I was wrong". Without Chinese language skills, most North Korean refugees remain at risk of being discovered by the police. "The police pay 200 yuan to anyone who discloses the whereabouts of North Koreans", explains one refugee. "That's what I'm most afraid of. I'm always hiding". Easy prey for the unscrupulous, they're forced to do dangerous jobs for little money. "Most North Korean women fall into the hands of human traffickers", states activist Tim Peters. "They're sold into prostitution". Unlike other countries, China classes North Korean refugees as economic migrants. If caught, they face return to Pyongyang and almost certain execution. "North Koreans are being sent back by the hundreds", complains Peters. Without external pressure, the situation for these refugees is unlikely to improve. Their only hope is that scrutiny surrounding the 2008 Beijing Olympics will encourage China to change its policy.
