Gunsmith - Make sight elevator using scrap metal & hand tool A missing rear sight elevator is a common problem with older rimfire rifles. In this GunTec presentation Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates the process for making a replacement rear sight elevator from scrap metal. He starts by applying some layout dye to the scrap metal and using a template made from another elevator he scribes the outline of the part. The major pieces of excess metal are cut off using a hacksaw with the metal held in a vise. Then the part is shaped using a variety of files. After the profile of the part is complete, the elevator is thinned until it fits perfectly in the rear sight. This is a simple fix to a common problem.

Gunsmith - Inlet an ebony forend tip using only hand tools After gluing a piece of ebony onto the forend of a rifle stock, the next step is to trim away the excess and inlet the barrel channel. He starts by trimming off all of the excess material with a fine tooth wood saw, and after marking the centerline of the barrel channel, he cuts the channel to depth in the tip using a round *** file. A sharp chisel or barrel channel inletting tool can be used to open the channel to the desired diameter. As he gets close, inletting gold is applied to the barrel so that any contact points between the barrel and the forend tip can be scraped away.

another guitar vid of me just taking a break, skip if uninterested been working on a new vid. just thought I'd film a quick snip of me playing an old journey tune on my guit fiddle now that it's scalloped. I'm liking it pretty well. Still buzzes on 2 and 5 when I lower the action but only way to fix is to file the frets more then recrown them partially or all the way. lots of work so I'll prob just let it buzz. I hope to be done with this new vid in another several days. but may be longer.
Gunsmith - Crowning the muzzle of a rifle barrel This GunTec video provides the information necessary for anyone to recrown the muzzle of their rifle using simple hand tools. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, repairs and crowns the muzzle of a Winchester model 60 to demonstrate the process. Start by removing all of the damaged material from the muzzle with a smooth, chalked file. Tool marks are eliminated by polishing with varying grits of sandpaper, using the file as a backer. Once the surface is square and smooth, the crown is cut using a round headed, brass wood screw and a bit of lapping compound. Simply apply the compound to the head of the screw, chuck the screw in a hand drill, and touch the head of the screw to the muzzle while turning it at a medium speed.

Update and 870 Shotgun Shortening Project Gunsmithing college keeps me busy. 870 Magnum Express. 28" vent rib, cut to about 18.75" with a square/level, trued with a fine file(never used a coarse one at any point), finished with sandpaper. Going to do internal and external crown with polishing stone or finer sandpaper, cold blue/black the marred areas, and then I'll make another update!

Level a high fret Leveling a high fret without the use of luthier specific tools. I own a fair amount of specialized tools (most of which are homemade) for guitar work, but the purpose of this video is to show people how to take care of a high fret with items/tools they might already own or can buy cheaply at any hardware store. A credit card is used as a fret rocker and a 3 square (triangle) file bought for $4 at Home Depot is used to take down the fret top and re-crown the fret. While I use MicroMesh to remove the tooling marks and polish the fret, various grades of sandpaper and/or steel wool will accomplish the same thing.

da_x_guitar first test w/amp. Still needs some fret work, at LEAST a re-crown, something to complain about the sustain and playability very high up at this point. But, nice warm semi-cleans and crunch. I doubt this will become anything like my main player, but it's certainly good enough for a backup or to play some songs live or whatever. But the next guitar I build from scratch will be much better already :-)

Gunsmith - How to shorten and recrown barrel with hand tool Although most people are intimidated when it comes to shortening and recrowning a barrel, it's pretty easy when you have the right tools. In this GunTec presentation Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates how to cut and recrown a rifle barrel using an old Winchester model 67. He starts by clamping a Wheeler Engineering dovetail cutting fixture on the barrel at the point where it is to be shortened. A hacksaw is used to cut off the portion of the barrel to be removed and a smooth file is used to true up the surface. The hardened fixture will insure the muzzle is filed down square to the bore. For cutting the crown Larry uses an eleven degree piloted reamer. Chatter marks are removed using abrasive paper backed by his thumb.
