i23 - Rapid Interactive 3D Reconstruction from a Single Image To appear in Proceedings of Vision, Modelling and Visualization (VMV) 2009. Authors: Savil Srivastava, Ashutosh Saxena, Christian Theobalt, Sebastian Thrun, Andrew Ng Abstract: We present i23, an algorithm to reconstruct a 3D model from a single image taken with an arbitrary photo camera. It is based off an automatic machine learning approach that casts 3D reconstruction as a probabilistic inference problem using a Markov Random Field trained on ground truth data. Since it is difficult to learn statistical relations for all possible images, the quality of the automatic reconstruction is sometimes unsatisfying. We therefore designed an intuitive interface for a user to sketch, in a few seconds, additional hints to the algorithm. We have developed a way to incorporate these constraints into the probabilistic reconstruction framework in order to obtain 3D reconstructions of much higher quality than previous fully-automatic methods. Our system also represents an exciting new computational photography tool, enabling new ways of rendering and editing of photos. Related Work: Builds off Ashutosh Saxena's Make3d algorithm (make3d.stanford.edu)

Human Evolution: Reconstructing Our Ancestors All of the sketches that overlap the photos of skulls were done by me. I did not originally intend this, but the video came out as a sort of optimistic outlook on humanity, trying to dispel the fallacy that we are above all other organisms. It came out better than I thought. Feel free to criticise the drawings or the whole video as much as you want, however.

'The Green Dream' Zord Reconstruction Battle Hi guys. (Not so) Hot on the heels from my last two reconstructions comes the battle against Robogoat from 'The Green Dream'. I should point out that as well as restructuring the footage, I've also remixed the sound. The sound is a bit choppy, but otherwise I'm really happy with this video. All honest opinions appreciated. Interactive topology-aware surface reconstruction Andrei Sharf, Thomas Lewiner, Gil Shklarski, Sivan Toledo, Daniel Cohen-Or The reconstruction of a complete watertight model from scan data is still a difficult process. In particular, since scanned data is often incomplete, the reconstruction of the expected shape is an ill-posed problem. Techniques that reconstruct poorly-sampled areas without any user intervention fail in many cases to faithfully reconstruct the topology of the model. The method that we introduce in this paper is topology-aware: it uses minimal user input to make correct decisions at regions where the topology of the model cannot be automatically induced with a reasonable degree of confidence. We first construct a continuous function over a three-dimensional domain. This function is constructed by minimizing a penalty function combining the data points, user constraints, and a regularization term. The optimization problem is formulated in a mesh-independent manner, and mapped onto a specific mesh using the finite-element method. The zero level-set of this function is a first approximation of the reconstructed surface. At complex under-sampled regions, the constraints might be insufficient. Hence, we ***yze the local topological stability of the zero level-set to detect weak regions of the surface. These regions are suggested to the user for adding local inside/outside constraints by merely scribbling over a 2D tablet. Each new user constraint modifies the minimization problem, which is solved ...
The New Reign of NEFERTITI (Photoshop Reconstruction) I've seen artists try to bring out the living likeness of Queen Nefertiti many times, and some of the most famous attempts, though good in and of themselves, always seem to adjust her facial features to match certain contemporary standards of beauty in some way, which really isn't necessary because the original bust of Nefertiti is already so beautiful and lifelike. I took the chance of leaving the bust's features entirely as they are, only replacing the paint and plaster with flesh and bone. The result is absolutely stunning. "Sleeping Beauty" reconstruction 1/17 The Mariinsky Ballet; Obraztsova/Korsakov Dedication to my friend ketinoa (RussianBalletVideo), may your account rest in peace! Sergei Vikharev's controversial reconstruction of Marius Petipa & Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's original 1890 production of "The Sleeping Beauty" for the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet. I have read that the company's new director Fateyev is not fond of any of the recently staged reconstructions (ie "La Bayadère", "Le Réveil de Flore" & "The Sleeping Beauty"), & they have been sort of "unofficially" removed from the repertory. The worse crime is that the company has not filmed any of these productions & released them commercially to DVD, & instead has sort of wasted or time with yet another film of "Swan Lake" & "Don Quixote". There is a documentary on DVD called "Sacred Stage" that features part of the vision scene from the reconstruction of "The Sleeping Beauty", but it was filmed from a very poor vantage point in the theatre. **Cast - --Princess Aurora - Eugenia Obraztsova --Prince Désiré - Anton Korsakov --The Lilac Fairy - Anastasia Kolegova (other cast credited in subsequent clips) --Choreography by Marius Petipa (reconstructed by Sergei Vikharev; some soviet-era steps have been retained) --Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (with minor revisions by Riccardo Drigo) --Décor restored by Andrei Voitenko, Boris Kaminsky & Andrei Sevbo from the original designs of Heinrich Levogt (prologue); Ivan Andreyev (Act I); Mikhail Bocharov (Act I, Act II-scene 1 & Act II-scene 2-panorama); Konstantin Ivanov ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: HAITI RECONSTRUCTION: PRIME MINISTER MAX BELLERIVE & BILL CLINTON (MINUSTAH) MaximsNewsNetwork: 17 August 2010 - UN MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - Hoping international donors will make good on billions of dollars in pledges for Haiti's post-earthquake reconstruction, former US President Bill Clinton along with Haiti's prime minister Max Bellerive gave a presentation today in Port-au-Prince for $(USD) 300 million worth of reconstruction projects; the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission Co-chairs Bellerive and Clinton, who is the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Haiti, presented 23 projects ready to be launched. Seven months after the earthquake, officials say reconstruction remains all but idle and 1.6 million people remain homeless while disgruntlement and setbacks are becoming the norm. Among the proposed projects are a 70 million dollar sanitation project, a plan for reinforcement of agriculture rated at 200 million dollars and aimed at training 30000 farmers while raising their income by 25 percent. Talking to a panel of representatives of various International, National and Regional Organizations as well as members of the private sector, Bellerive and Clinton also took the opportunity to make the final adjustments for the working of the Commission. The proposed framework includes an internal regulation, an executive budget and an anti-corruption office. Bellerive estimated 38 million dollars needed for an educational package including return to school for children and repairs of 75 schools. Some 325000 children who were left out of ...

New 3D Reconstruction Algorithm from UC San Diego Augmented reality walkthroughs of a building or a city, online alignment of a camera network and 3D navigation through a collection of photographs are just a few of the potential applications of an algorithm created in the computer science department at UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering. For this work, UCSD computer scientists earned was one of three honorable mentions for the David Marr prize which is the best paper award at the world's premier computer vision conferences, ICCV, the International Conference on Computer Vision which took place last month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. "The algorithm is very much practical. We have performed real-life 3D reconstructions. In fact, the significance of the paper lies in our approaches for designing a theoretically correct algorithm that also works well in practice," explained Manmohan Chandraker, the first author on the award-winning ICCV paper and a fifth-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering.

Reconstructed faces of Egyptian mummies - part 2 Another facial reconstructions of Egyptian mummies. They are coming back to the world of the living... I own nothing in this movie. I've gathered a lot of photos from various websites and it is difficult for me to set and mention all sources but I think that ancient Egyptians are worth showing them in modern times. The Face of Cleopatra (Narration & Photoshop Reconstruction) What did Cleopatra look like? That's one of the most popular questions ever asked about this elusive Pharaoh. Unfortunately, no clear answer exists, as Cleopatra's image and reputation changed dramatically depending on who was telling the story. When she WAS spoken of kindly, it was interesting to note how the subject of her appearance didn't really figure into the equation. Her strength of wit and personality made her stand out more than any other feature. The myth of her incredible guile and physical attractiveness was actually started partially as a slur against her by those who couldn't understand how she could be so successful and yet seemingly have so much going against her, as her Greek family tree made her a foreigner on Egyptian soil, which brought with it a degree of prejudice from the Egyptians. Becoming allies (and lovers) with the great Julius Caesar and then later Marc Antony also fueled the conviction by her opposers that Cleopatra must possess incredible attractiveness and powers of persuasion to be able to seduce such powerful men, and the rumors began that she used these attributes to gain the upper hand in ALL her business dealings. A fascinating slur, and certainly one contrived to do the most damage to her reputation, but it's too simple a conclusion for so complex and savvy a ruler. Cleopatra was a business woman and a diplomat and a charismatic public figure (not forgetting that she was also the mother of four children); yet the only image of her ...
La Bayadère - Reconstruction of Petipa's 1900 revival 1/17 1/17 of the premiere of the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet's reconstruction of Marius Petipa's final revival of "La Bayadère" as staged in 1900. March 31, 2002, Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. The audience is comprised of the most important people of the ballet world, particularly in Russia. This reconstruction caused a great deal of debate among the Russian ballet & the ballet world in general, with many feeling it was better left to the history books. Many in the audience were quite shocked after watching the ballet in its original form - Altynai Asylmuratova was seen weeping after the performance, allegedly because of her shock at seeing the ballet restored. Unfortunately the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet have not yet filmed the production for commercial release to DVD, & recently the company's newly appointed director Yuri Fateev announced that all of the reconstructions shall no longer be performed (ie "The Sleeping Beauty" & "La Bayadère" ... I am not sure about "The Awakening of Flora"). I can only say that this is beyond CRIMINAL - this is Petipa's original production of "La Bayadère", need I say more? I apologize for the poor quality of this film, and the annoying little "skips" are a youtube thing I have not been able to avoid. With regard to the décor (which cannot be seen), it is exactly the same as the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet's 1941 production in every scene except "The Kingdom of the Shades" . **Cast for this clip - --Solor, a wealthy kshatriya - Igor Kolb --Madhavaya, a ...
Interactive 3D Scene Transitioning via Interpolative Reconstructions Using Random Multi-View Video Unstructured Video-Based Rendering: Interactive Exploration of Casually Captured Videos Abstract: We present an algorithm designed for navigating around a performance that was filmed as a "casual" multi-view video collection: real-world footage captured on hand held cameras by a few audience members. The objective is to easily navigate in 3D, generating a video-based rendering (VBR) of a performance filmed with widely separated cameras. Casually filmed events are especially challenging because they yield footage with complicated backgrounds and camera motion. Such challenging conditions preclude the use of most algorithms that depend on correlation-based stereo or 3D shape-from-silhouettes. Our algorithm builds on the concepts developed for the exploration of photo-collections of empty scenes. Interactive performer-specific view-interpolation is now possible through innovations in interactive rendering and offline-matting relating to i) modeling the foreground subject as video-sprites on billboards, ii) modeling the background geometry with adaptive view-dependent textures, and iii) view interpolation that follows a performer. The billboards are embedded in a simple but realistic reconstruction of the environment. The reconstructed environment provides very effective visual cues for spatial navigation as the user transitions between viewpoints. The prototype is tested on footage from several challenging events, and demonstrates the editorial utility of the whole system ...
