Flood Waters Receding COWICHAN VALLEY - Flood waters began to recede today - much to the relief of people who live near the raging, rain-swollen rivers across the mid-island. Another rainstorm gave the Cowichan Valley a pounding last night leaving more roads and fields flooded. But in other parts of the island, this was a day to keep a close eye on river levels and to clean up the mess left behind. For farmers on the Cowichan Bay flats, last night, there was very little sleep - up almost every hour checking equipment and livestock. At mid-morning, the Cowichan and Koksilah Rivers were still rising. Drivers are warned to obey traffic signs to stay off flooded roads. Farther north in Cedar the sun was out for a little while at least. But last night, the Nanaimo River was high - and the rain was coming down again. Yesterday, a local state of emergency was declared in the lower parts of the Nanaimo River - which was expected to peak by midnight. But last night, there were no evacuations - just preparation. Alberni Valley is also watching the river recede. In this case, it's the Somass river. Close to spilling it's banks on Sunday night - now they wait for the next November storm. In Nanaimo, there was some concern about turbidity - that's muddy water mixing with drinking water - detected in the system.
