Federal tax rebate scam Massachusetts elders are being warned about a new scam that targets the rebates they will receive from the federal government as part of their income tax filings. Atty. Gen. Martha Coakley said Thursday that some long-used telephone scams have spread to the Internet, and while they may be more complicated, "they are essentially the same old ploy. "They engage the elder in conversation, either on the phone or on-line, and ask for their personal information such as bank account or Social Security numbers." Coakley spoke at a State House meeting on elder abuse and exploitation. "We are seeing this already with the new federal rebates -- already people are being called and told 'Give us your Social Security number and we'll send you the checks early,' " she said. Callers may pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Service or a bank. People should hang up, or terminate the on-line exchange, said Edward J. Flynn Jr., executive director of South Shore Elder Services in Braintree. The home care agency has received calls from seniors who have gotten the fraudulent calls. "Nobody, no reputable organization does anything like that," Flynn said.

Claimants are also required to fill in details like their full name, identity card number and vehicle registration number on the prescribed form available at the post offices. Those who have more than one vehicle have to fill a separate form for each vehicle, for up to five vehicles (cars or combination of cars and motorcycles). During the Phase I period, third parties are not allowed to make the claims on behalf of vehicle owners. The procedure was explained by Pos Malaysia Berhad acting managing director Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid to reporters ahead of the first phase of the rebate claim that will stretch until March 31, 2009. He said after filling the form, Pos Malaysia staff would verify with the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) database to determine the eligibility for the cash rebate. I think Xcel is really dedicated to providing to the solar industry. As well as the Colorado, Denver government - very interested in our new energy economy. I think there will be things put in place to continue are success. If that is not the case I think energy rates will reach grid parity which will make it more attractive for a solar installation. New Jersey just just lost there rebate program a few months ago and since they pay so much for electricty it still makes sense for solar. The Xcel rebates are a great deal and it makes sense with or without the rebates everyone should be taking advantage of the Xcel rebates. SolarDave: When do you see them going away? Eric Van Orden: At this point they are funded to do 16mega watts of installations. Next year they projected 4M Watts, so the general solar market will be smaller. I am not sure how that will affect the companies that are involved in it. There will be less opportunities for the rebates next year. If you follow other markets like California it started with excellent rebates and slowly trickle down so since this is the start of the program with Xcel it is the best time to install and take advantage of the rebates and the tax credit which is going away at the end of the year.
