  • Tartarov plays Maurice Ravel - Scarbo Pianist:Jean-Jacques Hauser alias Tartarov was the leading ad hoc improviser in the style of the great masters. One told him "let it be in the style of Beethoven" and you got a new bagatelle. Video: Hannes Keller INFO: Maurice Ravel 1875-1937 We start the clip with a tiger in a tropical storm by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. We quote Rainer Maria Rilkes 1875-1926 opening of the first Duino Elegy: "For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror which we are still just able to endure". Ravel led the most boring life one can imagine. Absolutely nothing ever happened, also no travelling. But his compositions are full of exotic and fantastic allusions with titles such as: "Scarbo, the dancing dwarf, the fairy in the pond, gallows hill, the old mans morning dance to seduce a girl (Alborada del Gracioso), Sheherazade, Pavane for a deseased princess, The child and the sorcerer, Bolero, Tzigane, Couperins tomb, Serenade grotesque, Mirrors, A sad bird, Mother goose, Ballade of the queen who died from love, Flower mantle, Folktunes of Madagascar, Jeannes fan etc. His music is colourful, vivid, psychodelic, surrealistic, full of surprises and fun and dancing in the most exotic manners. One cannot tell me that the "crazy extravaganza" was not part of the real Ravel hiding behind the bourgeois. It was just so strong that he had no need for real life experiences. Life could not compete with his overwhelming imagination ...

  • "Care-charmer Sleep" by Samuel Daniel (poetry reading) He was a pal of Shakespeare's and they were about the same age. I expect they went out boozing and wenching together when there was nothing interesting on TV. This poem is from a work called "Delia", published in 1592, dedicated "To the right honourable the Ladie Mary, Countesse of Pembroke" who had been the poet's patron and taught him all he knew about verse and who knows what else. A few years later, Will wrote Macbeth - who says, "sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care, the death of each day's life, sore labor's bath, balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course, chief nourisher in life's feast...". Maybe Will had read Sam's work or maybe they'd had a morbid conversation after a few jars of ale. In some versions line three starts "relieve my anguish" The sleeping girl is "Flaming June" painted by Frederic, Lord Leighton in 1895. Apart form being asleep, she has nothing to do with the poem: I just like girls.

  • This Ravelled Dust - Cantata for a Nuclear Age (music by Robinson McClellan) This is a 6-minute excerpt of the full video, available online at World premiere performance April 30, 2010 by the Toronto Choral Artists, Mark Vuorinen, director (scroll down for full performer credits) -- About the piece "This Ravelled Dust: Cantata for a Nuclear Age" tells a story of nuclear proliferation. We often hear often about the practical and political problems of nuclear weapons and nuclear power. But it is just as important to address these issues in terms of ethics, the human spirit, and the myths and religious symbols that underlie contemporary Western culture. In developing nuclear energy, we have opened something that can never be closed again. This piece borrows imagery from the Old Testament to explore this very current dilemma. The piece focuses on the phrase: "His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord" [Isaiah 11:3], and the paradox of true wisdom ("delight") through fear, Biblically understood as love, awe, and respect. The choir sings the seven "O Antiphons" — a set of prayers sung in Christian churches over many centuries — alternating with episodes of Robin Muir-Miller's poem "Morning Glory: Radiant Night", set for Tenor and Bass soloists and a small group of instruments. -- Plot Overview and Characters The cantata begins in the Garden of Eden. Human beings, seeking new knowledge and egged on by our twin the Serpent, create a lawless and unstoppable fungus. The story leads through the ensuing conflagration to utter ...

  • Let's Play Together Resident Evil Darkside 017: Alfred's truth... We make it to Alfred's mansion and hear a familiar voice. However it's time for a truth to be ravelled. My partner on this LP is Grog.
  • pan with us - guitalele/mandolin duo "pan with us" - poem by robert frost (from "a boys will" - 1915) - my tune played on a yamaha GL1 guitalele with mandolin backing: PAN came out of the woods one day,— His skin and his hair and his eyes were gray, The gray of the moss of walls were they,— And stood in the sun and looked his fill At wooded valley and wooded hill. 5 He stood in the zephyr, pipes in hand, On a height of *** pasture land; In all the country he did command He saw no smoke and he saw no roof. That was well! and he stamped a hoof. 10 His heart knew peace, for none came here To this lean feeding save once a year Someone to salt the half-wild steer, Or homespun children with clicking pails Who see no little they tell no tales. 15 He tossed his pipes, too hard to teach A new-world song, far out of reach, For a sylvan sign that the blue jays screech And the whimper of hawks beside the sun Were music enough for him, for one. 20 Times were changed from what they were: Such pipes kept less of power to stir The fruited bough of the juniper And the fragile bluets clustered there Than the merest aimless breath of air. 25 They were pipes of pagan mirth, And the world had found new terms of worth. He laid him down on the sun-burned earth And ravelled a flower and looked away— Play? Play?—What should he play? 30
  • The Focus Group - Salty Sun Tales Keats at Teignmouth Spring, 1818 By the wild sea-wall I wandered Blinded by the salting sun, While the sulky Channel thundered Like an old Trafalgar gun. And I watched the gaudy river Under trees of lemon-green, Coiling like a scarlet bugle Through the valley of the Teign. When spring fired her fusilladoes Salt-spray, sea-spray on the sill, When the budding scarf of April Ravelled on the Devon hill, Then I saw the crystal poet Leaning on the old sea-rail; In his breast lay death, the lover, In his head the nightingale. • RS Thomas - It Is One Of Those Faces RS Thomas reads his poem It Is One Of Those Faces It Is One Of Those Faces by RS Thomas (1913-2000) It is one of those faces beginning to disappear as though life were at work with its eraser. It drizzles at the window through which I regard it. As one realising its peril, it accosts me in silence at every corner of my indifference, appealing to me to save it gratuitously from extinction. There was a moment it became dear to me, a skull brushed by a smile as the sun brushes a stone through ravelled passages in the hill mist. Must I single it with a name? I am coming to believe, as I age, so faithful its attendance upon the eye's business, it is myself I court; that this face, vague but compelling, is a replica of my own face hungry for meaning at life's pane, but blearing it over as much with my shortness of faith as of breath.
