  • Blowing up a 900 MHZ paging transmitter These transmitters were destroyed per the deconstruction agreement between the paging system owner and the tower company (not Lynn's company ) hired to remove them. For tax write off purposes, they had to be destroyed. We destroyed them, and had fun doing it. 900 MHZ alphanumeric pagers are pretty much history now. Lynn Kreyer N9QIP found it useful in some weird way to construct a mass email to a number of people with some of my video URL's. I hope you enjoy the videos. I am not sure what Lynn's intentions were, and nobody else really knew either who called/e-mailed me today asking about it. It's interesting that the garage this film was made in, is Lynn's direct competitor. Sounds like to me Lynn has some maturity issues about his competition getting the business, and having fun at it as well. How sad that Lynn has to stoop so low to email my work customers, FAA, FCC, IRS, DEA, Girl Scouts, The Lion's Club and the AARP and "point out" these videos. Perhaps I should turn on the YouTube AdSense feature and start making money off the added video views.! YAY !
  • My Thoughts on a nationwide Amateur Paging network Following up from twitter, I made this little presentation of my thoughts on a nationwide paging network for amateur radio use. • Vid Response For Search And Rescue setup for UVF1 radios for Paging and Scrambling. Part 1 Warning: long and boring video response series for a viewer wanting to know how to setup the paging and voice scrambling feature on a TYT UVF1 radio. I would of used my other channel but these were more than 15 minutes and I was too lazy to split it up. Nerds might be interested, but believe me, I wouldn't watch them.

  • Aeroflex IFR 2944 POCSAG Paging Test Test of an alphanumeric page transmission at 512bps with the IFR 2944. POCSAG is actually 'FSK' but since its deviation is 4.5kHz it's well within the audio range, it works if you consider it AFSK as well (PDW can decode POCSAG via computer soundcard) 141.06MHz is not an active paging frequency in this area, so this short demo did not interfere with actual paging service. (149.770MHZ is the one which is in use.)

  • New Radio Alert! Motorola 5M1U I had to pick up this cute little pup. The Motrola 5M1U. Superhet, 4 tubes and a Selenium Rectifier. 3 way power! AC-DC and Battery! The 67 1/2 Volt "B" batteries are still availiable for this radio, which I think is pretty neat. (update: upon closer scrutiny, the B battery I saw for sale doesn't have the correct snap post spacing. I'll have to cross referance the original battery number to see what I can find.)

  • 200W POCSAG paging transmitter driven using Arduino Tecnomen HiQ 1000 paging transmitter driven using a self-built POCSAG encoder. The POCSAG binary code for the complete burst is generated using the new POCSAG::Encode perl module on a Linux host, transmitted using a KISS-like protocol called PISS to the Arduino Duemilanove 328 board, which then keys the transmitter and drives bits to the transmitter at the selected speed (512 bit/s in this case). The transmitter is a real FSK surplus paging TX, and puts out 200W. We're currently running on 144.975 MHz in Helsinki. The encoder can bundle a number of messages in a single burst, but there's a lot of space for optimisation in the message scheduling. The software and instructions to build the modem have been released here: wiki.ham.fi
  • On The Line: A History of Ericsson On The Line brings Ericsson's rich history of innovation to life told by those who helped change the way we communicate. Their story may appear to revolve around technology and engineering, but their impact goes much further, transforming lives for the better. On The Line is not about products or services. Instead it highlights Ericsson's personality, its people's values - and the moments where sparks of imagination and innovation changed everything. The name itself is intended to reflect the risk that Ericsson people were willing to take, and also the more literal interpretation of communicating by phone. Ericsson's contemporary innovators are building a Networked Society, standing upon the shoulders of giants.

Motorola GM340 transceiver transmitting on 144.975 MHz. ATI Wireless Corporate programmable pager receiving the paging messages and saying "beep". There's another receiver (FT-7800) on the background monitoring the 512 bps (yes, bits per second) transmissions. The tiny computer runs a transmitter client, which polls a pair of central servers for new messages which should be transmitted. Another server runs a DX cluster client which uploads DX spots using an HTTP JSON API to the servers. The servers authenticates both the transmitter clients and the message sources using HMAC-SHA1. oh7
