  • Pulsejet-powered Long-EZ (part 3) Here's another flight of the pulse-jet powered Long-EZ ARF. After a lot of ground-work sorting out the fuel system I ran it on an old (30 minutes total running time) reed-valve that was near the end of its life. You can hear that the engine starts to run rough as the video goes on. I stuffed up the landing too -- didn't feel like walking (again) so I put it down hot and bounced it (damn!). The fuel system is now sorted so I'll post more videos later and I'm already making the first batch of these engines if anyone wants one. And, believe it or not, just 10 minutes after that flight, a *real* vari-EZ arrived at our field. Only the second time I've seen one here in four years. What were the odds of that?
  • Pulsejet powered World Models TameCat RC plane, maiden flight After a few delays and some last-minute changes to the fuel system so that the engine could draw fuel up the 8-inches between the tank-bottom and the spraybar, the first flight of the pulsejet-powered World Models TameCat has happened. It's sure not lacking in power (10lbs thrust versus 7lbs flying weight) and it was damned fast! Despite being a mild-mannered ***-cat when powered by a regular glow-engine it's very apparent that under full jet-thrust I'm going to have to cut back the elevator throw a little. The TameCat is such a big *** to fly once the power's off though - landing is a breeze! The engine switched to lean-mode short-cycling when I pulled high-G's in the second turn so I'll have ti increase the fuel pressure some more and reduce the size of the fuel-metering jet so as to reduce the effect of hi-G's on fuel-flow. With luck, I'll get the changes done and fly it again tomorrow! Don't miss that video -- subscribe now. And if you like what you see, tell World Models that they should offer a pulse-jet version with a few modifications. I'll let them have the necessary changes. This is the *perfect* pulsejet trainer!
  • Advanced Thermalpulse "Chinese" Valveless Pulsejet Engine www.Beck- Advanced chinese-style valveless pulsejet engine, running on propane, it gets so hot that the stainless steel starts to burn! A valveless pulsejet is a type of jet engine with no moving parts. It can run statically and be throttled over a wide range. Unlike turbojet turbine engines they do not have any spool up time, and can be throttled to back and forth from minimum to maximum throttle many times a second. While they do get extremely hot, they are surprisingly efficient compared to hobby RC turbine engines. Pulsejets have no moving parts, and they use sound waves to compress the fuel air mixture. This natural compression is very efficient, compared to mechanical compression of turbines and turbojets. Because of this a good valveless engine will actually be more fuel efficient than the average hobby turbine, and if you use a thrust augmenter duct with the pulsejet, the efficiency can easily jump to twice that of a turbine. When you combine this, with the fact that they have no moving parts, require no complex precision machining required by extremely high RPM parts, you have a very attractive engine, that costs 10 times less than a cheap hobby turbine. No moving parts also means no real maintenance. Hobby turbines should be taken apart and inspected each run, and many parts like the bearings need frequent replacement, most hobby turbines need a complete overhaul of all moving parts after 20 hours.   • Pulsejet-powered Long-EZ (part 2) Here is the first (albeit short) flight of my pulsejet-powered Long-EZ. Unfortunately a faulty connection to the fuel filter caused air bubbles in the fuel-line which meant the engine quit prematurely but it shows that this engine produces more than enough power to push one of these ARFs through the air quite nicely. It also shows that starting is quite straight forward and reliable. After the engine cut, opted not to do a 180 degree turn because I didn't know how well it glided. As it turns out, it glides damned well and I could have easily made the turn. Fortunately we have a *very* long runway. A new fuel-filter is on its way and (weather allowing) another (longer) video will be posted when it arrives. Stay tuned (subscribe).
  • Overpowered pulsejet Long-EZ crash This plane flies very nicely with an 8lbs-thrust pulsejet (PJ8) but I thought I'd use it to test my new 12+lbs design. Unfortunately, the high thrust line combined with the increased force from the more powerful engine meant that it wouldn't rotate on the takeoff run. I should have cut the throttle after it wandered off into the long grass and bent the undercarriage but I thought I'd keep trying (big mistake). When I finally aborted and cut the engine, the model lept into the air because the force holding it down was suddenly removed. I think it's fair to say that 12+lbs of thrust is a little too much for this model. I'll be sticking the PJ8 back on for future flights.
  • Pulsejet Long-EZ now very fast! I've replaced the original PJ8 pulsejet prototype with the pre-production (second) prototype on which all the manufactured engines are based. The production engines actually produce quite a bit more than 8lbs of thrust and (as you can see in the video) this really makes a big difference to the Long-EZ's performance. This was a short flight. These engines are thirsty, the Long-EZ tank has a small and I don't think I filled it all the way. I've now reflexed the ailerons of the Long EZ, setting them to be about 3mm up at the trailing edge. This has vastly improved the handling of the whole model and improved elevator authority a lot (it caught me out when flaring for a landing) but now, the plane no longer drops a wing and I was able to control the bounce very easily. Next up: the pulsejet-powered ARF Bobcat -- it's nearly done!

  • Putting your Finger in a Pulsejet Engine This video is from a few years ago. Since then I have had comments from lots of people going "I dare you to stick your finger in an engine." We'll I already have, though I dont recommend it because if you cause the engine to stop running, it could flame out and cook your hand. The Thermalpulse 180 design has an extremely wide throttle range, much higher than any other design. The engine can be run at such a low throttle level that the intake exhaust flow only blows cold air, all heat goes out the tail. The propane tank was nearly empty and I was finishing it off before getting it refilled. Low throttle it runs on vapor, then I tip the tank to feed it liquid propane, there is not much liquid in the tank and I kind of slosh the tank around to get the liquid to come out, and you can see the engine reving up and down from vapor to liquid several times a second. The engine has a huge throttle range, and can be throttled from minimum to max throttle very quickly, as seen by the sloshing fuel flow throttling. Dont try this at home... for those of you who just happen to have a pulsejet sitting around.

Another thing with pulsejet engines, is that the spark plug gap can be wider than normal engines. The wider the gap the more exposure it will have. The model T coil produces a good hot spark that can ignite liquid fuels like kerosene or diesel fuel, but is still relatively safe. If you get shocked accidentally with it, its painful, but thousands of times safer than transformers.
