The "indefinite detention" sections of the NDAA bill would turn the whole of the United States into a "battlefield" and hand the executive branch the power to have the military arrest US citizens and hold them without trial. Fort Leonard Wood Public Affairs director Tiffany Wood has provided the first official response to the shocking US Army document that outlines the implementation of re-education camps, admitting that the manual was "not intended for public release" and claiming that its provisions only apply outside the United States, a contention completely disproved by the language contained in the document itself. After a reader sent Wood a link to where the manual, entitled FM 3-39.40 Internment and Resettlement Operations (PDF), can be downloaded on the army.mil website (but only by military employees with special credentials), Wood responded by stating that the document should not be in the public domain. "The document was not intended for public release," said Wood, adding, "Any other questions regarding the document, you will need to file a FOIA request." This means that either hackers have obtained access to a secure military website and downloaded the manual or it was leaked by a military employee concerned about the content of the document. Saying the measure has "chilling impact on First Amendment rights," US District Judge Katherine Forrest, of New York's Eastern District, found that a group of reporters and activists who brought the lawsuit had no way of knowing whether they could be subjected to it. That makes it an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment's free speech right and the Fifth Amendment's right to due process, Forrest said in a written opinion. It provides an 48 sq feet of living area within a very portable 7 lbs 7 oz carry weight (and that's my upgraded carry to include tarp footprint and 10 MSR "Groundhog" tent stakes too; factory weight is listed at 6 lbs 6 oz). Add even more space for the two large vestibules that are provided by the tent fly. This roominess provided outstanding livability to us three backpackers on a wilderness adventure to high altitudes (me, son, dog). Three people could fit in a more cozy manner. Mesh integration is excellent. Pole attachment is via both clip and uncoated sleeve system. Several nights spent in the tent seem to indicate a dry, well-ventilated interior. Hard core snow and rain resistence was not tested on this trip but stake out provisions are provided for better tent strength. A very useful mesh gear loft is included along with four interior pockets (albeit they are not tightly sewn. Many parts of the Recluse are seam sealed but the bottom tent seam (catendary sewn) should be sealed by the user. The vestibules are well-executed and provide an incredible amount of dry gear storage area. The chosen light Mossy Green and light grey colors are excellent are provide more subdued camping and excellent, bright light filtration inside. But remember this is a sub-$100 tent so you will give up a few things in that choice. Close inspection of the "Recluse" tent model will reveal it to be a medium quality tent with compromises made to achieve that ...
Republicans Backing Popular Obamacare Provisions Source: House Republican leaders are quietly hatching a plan of attack as they await a historic Supreme Court ruling on President Barack Obama's health care law. If the law is upheld, Republicans will take to the floor to tear out its most controversial pieces, such as the individual mandate and requirements that employers provide insurance or face fines. If the law is partially or fully overturned they'll draw up bills to keep the popular, consumer-friendly portions in place — like allowing adult children to remain on parents' health care plans until age 26, and forcing insurance companies to provide coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Ripping these provisions from law is too politically risky, Republicans say. The nature of the research included these specific problems: Can we create by post-H (hypnotic) control an action contrary to an individual's basic moral principles? Can we "alter" a person's personality? Can we guarantee total amnesia under any and all conditions? Could we seize a subject and in the space of an hour by post-H control have him crash an airplane? Federal Court Dissolves Constitution A federal appeals court has ruled that the US government can still indefinitely detain citizens should it wish to do so, under the Obama Administration's National Defense Authorization Act. The ruling came in the form of an extension of an "emergency" stay of a district court judge's order that had previously struck down the defence bill's provisions altogether. Last month District Judge Katherine Forrest permanently blocked the NDAA provision, saying that "First Amendment rights have already been harmed and will be harmed by the prospect of (the law) being enforced." However, the very next day the Obama administration moved to appeal the decision in an attempt to reinstate the indefinite detention provisions. The administration characterized the ruling by Forrest as unconstitutional. Federal judge in New York, Raymond Lohier, then granted the Obama administration an "emergency" stay that temporarily blocks Forrest's ruling. Late yesterday, a three-judge motions panel of the US Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit extended that stay, supporting the administration's appeal and intimating that Forrest's ruling is flawed.
