  • Anthony, warrior of God. Saint Anthony was canonized (declared a saint) less than one year after his death. There is perhaps no more loved and admired saint in the Catholic Church than Saint Anthony of Padua, a Doctor of the Church. Though his work was in Italy, he was born in Portugal. He first joined the Augustinian Order and then left it and joined the Franciscan Order in 1221, when he was 26 years old. The reason he became a Franciscan was because of the death of the five Franciscan protomartyrs -- St. Bernard, St. Peter, St. Otho, St. Accursius, and St. Adjutus -- who shed their blood for the Catholic Faith in the year 1220, in Morocco, in North Africa, and whose headless and mutilated bodies had been brought to St. Anthony's monastery on their way back for burial. St. Anthony became a Franciscan in the hope of shedding his own blood and becoming a martyr. He lived only ten years after joining the Franciscan Order. So simple and resounding was his teaching of the Catholic Faith, so that the most unlettered and innocent might understand it, that he was made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Saint Anthony was only 36 years old when he died. He is called the "hammer of the Heretics" His great protection against their lies and deceits in the matter of Christian doctrine was to utter, simply and innocently, the Holy Name of Mary. When St. Anthony of Padua found he was preaching the true Gospel of the Catholic Church to heretics who would not listen to him, he ...

  • "The Great Inhibitor... Fear!" This meditation is based on the propers for the 1st Sunday after Christmas Day, and was posted in 2009. Speaks of that which stops love - fear. May God strengthen us all, and cast aside fear. May we be more akin in our faith to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, who not only had no fear, but was filled with the love of God! Almighty and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to govern us in all our doings in the way of thy good pleasure: that we, faithfully serving thee in the Name of thy well-beloved Son, may worthily abound in all good works. [Who.] ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin: grant that we, being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit. [through] EPISTLE. Galatians 4:1-7 1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. 3 Even so we, when we were children, were in *** under the elements of the world: 4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abbe, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an ...

September 6, 1914, Gorlice [Austrian Galicia], Poland) — priest and religious activist of Russian national orientation in the Lemko Region. After completing his gymnasium studies in Jaslo and Nowy Sacz (where he lived in the *Ruska Bursa student residence) Sandovych entered the Greek Catholic Basilian Monastery at Krekhiv in eastern Galicia. Not long after, however, he became estranged from the monastery and from Greek Catholicism in general, resulting in his transfer in 1904 to the Orthodox monastery at Pochaiv in western Volhynia, which at the time was in the Russian Empire. He completed his formal education at the Russian Orthodox Theological Seminary in Zhytomyr (1904-1910) and was ordained an Orthodox priest (1911). That same year Sandovych returned to the *Lemko Region as the first Orthodox priest to serve in the area since it became Greek Catholic at the outset of the eigh***th century. He served parishes in the Lemko villages of Grab, Wyszowadka, and Dlugie, all the while under the watchful eye of the Austrian authorities, who were fearful of the spread of Russian influence in the area through the Orthodox movement. In March 1912 Sandovych was arrested and put on trial two years later in Lviv (March 9-June 6, 1914), where together with Orthodox priest (Ihnatii Hudyma), a student (Vasyl Koldra), and a prominent Galician Russophile journalist (Semen Bendasiuk) he was accused of being a ...

  • The Life of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila Here, I am gonna show the life of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz. His Life: Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, aka San Lorenzo de Manila (1600 September 29, 1637) is the first Filipino saint (protomartyr) venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. He was martyred during persecution of Japanese Christians under the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 17th century. Born in Binondo, Manila, Lorenzo Ruiz was of mixed Chinese and Filipino descent (chinito). His Chinese father taught him Chinese, and his Filipino mother taught him Tagalog. Both of his parents were Catholic.[1][2][1][3][4] Ruiz served as an altar boy at the convent of Binondo church. After being educated by the Dominican friars for a few years, Ruiz earned the title of escribano (stenographer) because of his skillful hand and unsurpassed penmanship. He became a member of the Confraternity of the Rosary. In 1636, while working as a clerk at the Binondo Church, Ruiz was falsely accused of killing a Spaniard. Prior to this incident, his life with his Filipino wife, two sons and a daughter was peaceful, religious and full of contentment. But after the allegation, Ruiz sought asylum on board a ship with three Dominican priests: Saint Antonio Gonzalez, Saint Guillermo Courtet, and Saint Miguel de Aozaraza, a Japanese priest, Saint Vicente Shiwozuka de la Cruz, and a layman named Saint Lazaro of Kyoto, a leper. Ruiz and his companions left for Japan on June 10, 1636 with the aid of the Dominican fathers and Sr. Domingo Gonzales.[1][2][3][4] [edit] Exile to ...

  • Saint Stephen's Day Propers Saint Stephen's Day Propers This video features the chanting of the Mass propers for Saint Stephens the Protomartyr, along with chants for the Christmas Season and appropriate sacred images. St. Stephen was a Jew living in the Hellenic provinces, related to the Apostle Paul and one of the first seven deacons ordained by the Apostles to serve the Church in Jerusalem (thus making him an archdeacon). In the words of Asterias:St Stephen was "the starting point of the martyrs, the instructor of suffering for Christ, the foundation of righteous confession, since Stephen was the first to shed his blood for the Gospel." The Holy Spirit worked powerfully through his faith, enabling him to perform many miracles and always defeat the Jews who would dispute with him. The Jews in their hatred of St. Stephen lied about him to the people, but St. Stephen with his face illumined reminded the people of the miracles God had worked through him and even rebuked the Jews for killing the innocent Christ. The people were enraged by what they thought was blasphemy and 'gnashed their teeth' at Stephen. It was then that he saw his Christ in the heavens and declared it so. Hearing this, the Jews took him outside the city and stoned him to death, with his kinsman Saul (later St. Paul) holding their coats while they did it. Afar off on a hill was the Virgin Mary and St. John the Theologian who witnessed this first martyrdom for the Son of God and prayed for him while he was being stoned. This ...
