Programmable lock that self destructs after three incorrect tries. This is revision 3 of my programmable lock. I integrated a counter system that removes a section of wire required to open the door using water if the incorrect code is submitted three times. The incorrect attempts are reset every time the correct password is entered. On my server there are no build/destroy permissions for guests, so this is meant to keep guests out. Obviously anyone with a shovel can burst right through in about 3 seconds.

Programmable Logic: Computing Bit by Bit [Recorded: July 22, 2009] The introduction of the first commercial programmable logic devices (PLD) in the mid-1970s opened the door to a host of applications including telecommunications, audio and video broadcasting and storage where the combination of performance, cost and power efficiency are particularly important. Programmable logic blurs the line between software and hardware. These chips contain a program in its memory that allows them to be re-programmed. That sounds like software. But the program creates logic gates and wires connecting them. That sounds like hardware. Performance improvement gained by using programmable logic instead of microprocessors can be a factor of one hundred, with comparable power reduction to match. But today we don't see programmable logic computers. Or at least, we don't know them when we see them. Do we need new definitions and new dividing lines? In this lecture and Q&A session, Steve Trimberger, holder of over 150 PLD patents and Xilinx Fellow, discusses the challenges and key milestones in the development of programmable logic and its impact on computing history. He outlines the successes and failures of configurable computing, and discusses PLDs prospects for the future.

NEXT WORLD - Intel Claytronics (Programmable Matter) "Claytronics" is an emerging field of engineering concerning reconfigurable nanoscale robots ('claytronic atoms', or catoms) designed to form much larger scale machines or mechanisms. Also known as "programmable matter", the catoms will be sub-millimeter computers that will eventually have the ability to move around, communicate with other computers, change color, and electrostatically connect to other catoms to form different shapes. The forms made up of catoms could morph into nearly any object, even replicas of human beings for virtual meetings. FOR MORE, VISIT: www.cs.cmu.edu

Teaching Programmable Logic Control (PLC) with the ST290 Industrial Control Module from LJ Create The hardware for this module comprises an electro-pneumatic production line system. A ladder logic programming editor and drive system, specifically designed for education, that mimics programmable logic controllers used in industry, is also included. All programming tasks that students complete can be tested on both a simulated production line and the real hardware system. By using the on-screen simulation of the production line you can turn every PC into a fully functioning training system. This means that you only need one hardware system in the classroom. Students develop and test programs on their own computer, before transferring the final version to the actual hardware. The ST290 Industrial Control Module brings a typical industrial application into the classroom, challenging students to think like real engineers and solve real problems. The well written curriculum materials supplied with this module introduces students to industry standard ladder logic programming. Through a progressive series of assignments, they discover concepts and programming techniques which are then put into practice during design challenges. The final task is for them to apply all their skills to design and test a parts selection system. The ready-made lessons, for both tutor and student provide a blended learning approach. This gives the opportunity for independent learning, team-work and group demonstrations to be carried out. Theory presentations in PowerPoint, enable tutors to ...

Programmable Aperture Photography: Multiplexed Light Field Acquisition mpac.ee.ntu.edu.tw Programmable Aperture Photography: Multiplexed Light Field Acquisition (SIGGRAPH 2008) Chia-Kai Liang, Tai-Hsu Lin, Bing-Yi Wong, Chi Liu, and Homer Chen National Taiwan University --Abstract-- We present a system including a novel component called programmable aperture and two associated post-processing algorithms for high-quality light field acquisition. The shape of the programmable aperture can be adjusted and used to capture light field at full sensor resolution through multiple exposures without any additional optics and without moving the camera. High acquisition efficiency is achieved by employing an optimal multiplexing scheme, and quality data is obtained by using the two postprocessing algorithms designed for self calibration of photometric distortion and for multi-view depth estimation. View-dependent depth maps thus generated help boost the angular resolution of light field. Various post-exposure photographic effects are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system and the quality of the captured light field.

A walking robot using programmable springs This is a simple demonstration of how programmable spring actuators can be used to create a set of robot legs with in-built stepping reflexes. The robot 'walks' when it is pulled along on its leash. All the behaviour is embedded in the actuators. When a leg is perturbed beyond a limit, the shoulder actuator sends a binary signal to the knee actuator, which lifts the leg off the ground. The leg drops back when it has swung forward far enough. When one leg takes a step it will also send a signal to suppress the stepping reflex in the other leg, which stops them both stepping at the same time. For more details about Programmable Spring Actuators go to: rmatics.sus*** And you can find a page about how this robot works via the Videos page on my site, or through here: I also have a page on the Brighton Robotics Community website here:

Reason 4 Tutorial - Thor as a Programmable Filter (a slightly advanced tutorial) - Part 2 of 3 This is Part 2 of 3 of my series on Thor. This video covers using Thor's extensive routing matrix to make really cool, switchable and programmable effects. I've made a patch that exercises some of your options when routing Thor, but the real power is in your brain. Once you know how to do things like this, you can take the time to make your own patches from scratch and really flourish in Reason. I'm using a Subtractor mono synth, only running 1 oscillator and 1 LFO, turned stereo as the basis for my sound and all other modulation is done through Thor's routing matrix and Combinator button assignments. I've tried to provide the most detailed information I could find in the Annotations, so make sure you have those turned on for the full effect. Part 1 (Thor as a Switchable Filter) can be found here - My blog and music website can be found here - For those who bothered to read this much but not watch the whole video; part 3 will use Malstrom stereo synthesis and all 4 of Thor's inputs and outputs. Quadra-synth, tri-filter, trippy envelope goodness. Thanks for watching!
