People seems to misunderstand the duties and responsibilites of a CDI. I have met people who go on and on about how proficient their signing skills are in ASL-- so I invite them out to workshops, and once we get to the workshop, they immediately protest against English all because they don't understand some words. They object to have English, oppression by hearing people, and that it should be all in ASL, deaf pride and so on... Whoa whoa, you cannot say that ! You must understand English as well! Because at the job, you have to interpret the English text to ASL for the Deaf consumers! CDI does mean a person is proficient in ASL, but it also mean that the person knows English as well. CDI is truly a bilingual job-- you must know English and ASL. You have to understand, it is not only the ASL-user Deaf people who complain, I have seen some oral Deaf people do the same-- They will mouth out with PSE signs, "I can interpret, I already know English, so it should be easy because I can lipread or hear with my CI, oh so easy to interpret for Deaf consumers!" I got my journeyman ticket in 3 years on a 4 year apprenticeship course. I started the trade in 1965 but I didn't get initially signed up on apprenticeship until 1967. I doubled up on the last year, went to NAIT twice in one year [1970]. But they wouldn't award me my inter-provincial ticket until I put in the full four years of time in the trade. Go figure, eh. Anyhow, I'm from the old school of brass welding & pick and filing & using Mutton Tallow on wooden paddles for filling dents with Lead. I became very proficient in sheet metal fabrication, shrinking it, stretching it, twisting it, bumping and rolling it, whereas, sheet metal became like clay to me, I could make it obey my every command in forming whatever pieces I wanted to form. I also became very proficient in painting....I custom painted dozens of cars in my career. This car - [a 1953 Ford Club Coupe c/wa 289 cid Mustang engine & C4 automatic] is of special significance to me. Voices of Reform Rural Transformation at West Carter Middle School West Carter Middle School serves fewer than 500 students in the small town of Olive Hill in the rural Appalachian region of Kentucky. Between 2000-2004, the school faced persistent low achievement in math and reading proficiency. A transformation was needed and in 2005 a new principal was hired bringing about an increase in collaboration among staff. Double lessons of math and reading were added to the daily class schedule. The percentage of students testing proficient and advanced in math has increased 50 points since the new principal was hired in 2005. The technique will comes on its own with practice, and the theory of it..... well, the theory is already set in stone for you! Do you know how some guitarists get that 'doobladoobladoobla' high-pitched bumblebee-esque shredding sound? It's just a matter of playing scales (sometimes arpeggios) very fastly. With this lesson, you'll find the three basic 'hurdles' that are oftimes difficult to overcome when playing scales. I break it down into three basic steps 1: Finger shapes (fingering patterns) 2: String transitioning (or skipping) 3: Fret transitioning (or fret skipping) Practicing these three steps on their own, and then combining them all simultaneously is the path to becoming proficient with scales. Just practice these three things, simply add speed, and you're an instantaneous shredder. Seriously. There's not much to it. It's easier than you think!

Quest for the muscle up: False Grip Pull-ups and Russian Dips. This is a short explanation for how to use these exercises to begin working up to a slow, controlled muscle up. Slow muscle ups put a lot of strain on the joints, so it is important to take a step-by-step approach. The joints take more time to adapt to the stress than the muscles, so if you try to move on every time you get stronger you will end up with shoulder, elbow, and/or wrist pain. If you take your time, like I suggest, and work each position until you have felt no strain for at least two weeks for 5-7 slow reps before extending the range of motion, you will not only succeed in performing the slow muscle up but you will do so without injuries, enabling you to continue with your training! Muscle ups on rings are easier than muscle ups on a straight bar if you perform a slow muscle up, no kip, no momentum. For this reason I suggest building strength on the straight bar and once you are proficient with the false grip pull ups, and by proficient I mean you can do at least 5-7 slow reps bringing your nipples to the bar and your arms nearly or completely parallel with the ground, start attempting one muscle up a week on the rings after warm up, just to see how you are progressing. I further suggest that you not try the muscle up until you can do full, slow russian dips for sets of 5-7 reps with no elbow strain. Be ready for this: You WILL be strong enough to perform a muscle up long before it is safe for your joints to do so. Be patient and not only will you not injure ...

Portland Fire & Rescue - Training & Safety - Firefighter Skills Training May/June 2010 Portland firefighters received a valuable training opportunity thanks to Laurelhurst Village. Laurelhurst Village, located on 30th and SE Stark Street in Portland, Oregon provides senior care, offering services such as health and rehabilitative care, long term care, assisted living, and respite and hospice services. In May and June, all firefighters at Portland Fire & Rescue will participate in a "Firefighter Skills Training" drill that will focus on further developing special techniques to help victims or firefighters who may be trapped in a commercial structure during an actual emergency. Exercises will include firefighter rescue, forcible entry, air management, and search techniques in a commercial structure. The drills will be conducted in a vacant wing of the Laurelhurst Village Senior Care Facility and in an adjacent unoccupied single family home. "These two vacant facilities have allowed us to do larger scale training and ensure that the skill set and overall proficiency of our firefighters are continuously improved," Portland Fire & Rescue Training & Safety Division Chief Scott Fisher said.
