MAKONDOR THE PEOPLE'S PRESIDENT Sierra Leone is approaching 2012 with her citizens standing on the crossroads to make a choice between: continuing to propagate the harmful divisions in the country or promoting unity and peace; reclaiming our youth from violence, joblessness and poverty or continuing to use them as agents of terror; giving women an important place in society or continuing to relegate them to the margins of society; privileging patronage and incompetence or rewarding competence, hard work and character. The Bio/Sesay ticket embody the bridge of change that Sierra Leone needs.

It's all about children (or at least the anatomical possibility thereof). UPDATE 6.29.11: I've tried to make this a video response to Greg Koukl's recent video about same-*** marriage, but he has not approved it as a response. Here is a link to the video: A response in particular to the TheAtheistAntidote's video "Gay Marriage NO; Respect YES", and more generally to all those who make the procreation-centric (or anatomical) argument in favor of the state's exclusively privileging hetero***ual marriage. The procreation-centric (or anatomical) argument destroys rather than strengthens the foundation for the exclusive privileging of hetero***ual marriage. How odd that those who identify themselves as defenders of marriage would rely on an argument that destroys it. But, as Jonathan Rauch astutely observes, these folks are so fixated on preventing homo***uals from getting the legal right to marry that if marriage itself is a casualty of their battle, the self-styled defenders seem to say, "So be it!" Links: Jonathan Rauch's essay "For Better Or Worse? The Case for Gay (and Straight) Marriage" -- TheAtheistAntidote's video -- NB: For those who argue that the state should not be in the marriage business -- a position with which I am not unsympathetic -- please note that *that* is not the subject of this video. Rather, this video is a refutation of a particular argument for the state's exclusive privileging of hetero***ual marriage. Thanks.

Dagon Returns Wikipedia says: Dagon is a 2001 horror movie directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli. Despite the title, the plot is actually based on HP Lovecraft's novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1932) rather than his earlier short story titled "Dagon" (1919). Clip from the film "Dagon" released on October 31, 2001 COMMENT: The ancient blood-drinking and flesh-eating fish-god Dagon takes over and his human agents smash the Christian icons and subjugate everyone to Dagon worship. This is a good adaptation of HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, made in the style of a classic 1960s horror movie for the drive-in theaters that were so common back then. The film is also a fitting commentary on the re-emergence, in our times, of the ancient nihilistic anti-reason, atavistic (less than human) cult against which our ancestors have struggled from as far back as we can see in recorded history. The oldest being the Zoroastrian and Vedic literature, followed very closely by the Hebraic literature. This vast body of literature deals mainly with the struggle against the regularly-recurring forces within human society that seek to impose harsh and rigid control over others. One major agent of this atavistic force comes, oddly, from the institutionalized multicultural post-modern feminist dogma, with its subversion of logic and privileging of emotion and subjectivity coupled with a pathological disdain for any view other than its own. Add to this a presumption of the truth of ...

Philosophy Core Concepts: Virginia Held, Emotion vs. Reason This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker. Narrative and Technology: Curtis Wong and Geoffrey Rockwell in Conversation Narrative has always been shaped by technology, from the beginnings of written traditions through the newspaper serial and the rise of cinema. Modern information and communication technologies have also changed our expectations about narrative, privileging the non-linear, hypertextual, exploratory and the visual. No longer bound by the conventions of print or film, narrative in the digital age is multi-modal and multivalent. Geoffrey Rockwell (Professor of Philosophy and Humanities Computing at the University of Alberta, Canada) and Curtis Wong (Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research) will be exploring the impact of new modes of storytelling, from serious gaming to text-message novels, on modes of learning and teaching, on the creation of web resources, and on our expectations of older media. Dr. Geoffrey Martin Rockwell is a Professor of Philosophy and Humanities Computing at the University of Alberta, Canada. From 1994 to 2008 he was at McMaster University where he was the Director of the Humanities Media and Computing Centre (1994 - 2004) and he led the development of an undergraduate Multimedia program. International Relations as a Social Science Speakers: Professor Iver Neumann Recorded on Monday 28 January 2013 in New Theatre, East Building. One origin of the social sciences lies in opposition to the discipline of history. Rather than speculating about the course of history generally, the idea was to look at the variation in forms of social life. The social sciences are not alone in attempting this. Other approaches to such a study may be found in psychology and biology. Drawing on Durkheim and Mauss, Professor Iver Neumann will begin with a discussion of how these different but overlapping approaches stand today, when the psychologising approach of methodological individualism and the biologising thrust towards stressing the genetic make-up of the species are on the rise. Stressing how humans are a meaning-producing species, and so bound to be living in a condition of alterity, Professor Iver Neumann will make the case for privileging social causes in the study of social life. Professor Iver Neumann will go on to discuss the specificity of International Relations (IR) relative to other social sciences. IR's sensibilities to alterity on all levels of political life means that it is an apt tradition from which to cope with the globalisation that defines the age. Crucially, however, for such ***yses to be meaningful, they have to pay attention to the sundry social fields within which global politics now play out. The large-scale hybridization that goes with globalization means that we can no longer afford to ...

Telemedicine Amidst Health Care Reform: Avoiding Legal Pitfalls Need more information on Health Care? Need a Health Care attorney? Download the presentation materials: The United States Supreme Court's recent decision upholding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act underscores the need to deliver and make accessible quality healthcare to patients throughout the United States in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This brings both telemedicine and the credentialing and privileging of telemedicine practitioners to the forefront of the affordable healthcare discussion. A year ago, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) enacted its rule on telemedicine credentialing and privileging. The rule gives healthcare facilities more flexibility in credentialing and privileging telemedicine practitioners by eliminating the need for an independent review. Despite the rule's obvious practicalities, healthcare facilities must take steps, from revising medical staff bylaws to creating new policies and written agreements, to avoid legal pitfalls and effectively minimize liability risks, protect patient privacy and ensure quality of care. This program covered the requirements of the CMS rule, its interplay with The Joint Commission's telemedicine standards and practical tips to ensure compliance. We will also address current practices in telemedicine, including consent issues, that do not implicate the CMS rule but require equal attention for effective implementation. The ...

Karim Crow-Did Islam Miss Out on Modernity?.mp4 Conventional wisdom asserts that if Muslims had followed the rationalist lead of Ibn Rushd or Ibn Khaldun, not the mystic mode of thought advanced by Ghazālī, they would not have fallen into a dead end of superstitious religiosity which led them to lag behind Europe in terms of scientific--technological rationalism. We also frequently hear that 'Arabic-Islamic philosophy' failed to achieve normative validity within Islamic civilization -- thereby Islam missed out on its possible Renaissance and retreated into medieval obscurity [eg Hans Küng]. (The only exception was the special privileging of philosophic activity linked with trans-rational metaphysics cultivated in Iranian culture; yet this also is being dismissed as a non-normative deviation from 'authentic' Arab Islam that privileges Sharī'ah discourse.) These deflections allegedly brought about Islam's marginalization, eclipsed by 18th century Enlightenment modernity. Muslims thus failed to 'modernize' by developing a technological mastery of natural forces and industry through cultivating independent reason and 'science'. Professor Crow pinpoints the fallacy of this widespread misconception arising from a misunderstanding of the unfolding and centrality of Islamic Rationality in religious & intellectual disciplines. He raises significant civilizational issues over its Eurocentric assumptions, as well as cultural and intellectual dilemmas of contemporary Muslims.

Architecture Thesis (final) Additive: An Urban Ecology - Robert L Koshgarian_(-RLK) Robert L. Koshgarian, III Advisor: Michael Rotondi TITLE: Additive: An Urban Ecology TEXT: This is an experiment, to find an additive to the rhythm of urban growth and oppose the common urban design taxidermy of historic-kitsch promenades. A fusion of two development typologies founds a new, contemporary growth type, the "Co-Urban" ecology. Broadway, Los Angeles- a theatrical center of great activity, now decayed and decrepit. The city has committed to the cosmetic re-facing of old facades and implanting premium retail; privileging the ground plane alone. However, the solution to the problem of activation requires more height and depth! A modernist approach impedes the solution to this contemporary problem. The space above the boulevard is in programmatic despair and the ground floor is no longer desirable - neither contribute to the proposal of "Bring(ing) back Broadway". In reality, "something new" is necessary here, not a flash back. A living additive is needed to focus on program possibilities in X, Y, and Z directions. The living additive is a proposition beyond remodel or demolition, even beyond juxtaposition. It is the marriage and reproduction of two organized density models in opposing scales, urban and suburban. The product of this fusion is named, "Co-Urban" ecology; this is the additive. Co-Urban ecology is the fusion from simple perpendicularity, the city's formal stasis, to the fusion necessary to creating a whole, systemic ecology. Co-Urban grows gradated ...

Let The Homeless Tell Their Story LET THE HOMELESS TELL THEIR STORY! Why let the homeless tell their story? The world has a tendency to privilege and give the podium to many whose policies and programmes contribute to homelessness. One example is (ex) Dr (Hon) Robert Mugabe's Operation Murambatsvina to restore order which left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. An earlier example is Sir William Chambers who was given the podium with his larger than life statue in Chambers' Street, Edinburgh. His improvement plan cleared 3000 homes close to the University of Edinburgh and replaced them with 300 houses. In lieu of such privileging, this digital art installation grasps the opportunity of UN World Poverty Eradication Day to give homeless people the podium and to stand up and tell their story. What makes people homeless? Often it is an amalgam of global politics, learned behaviour, family behaviour and the Law. A few people have everything, but still wonder the street in their unhappiness. Many families have been made homeless because of land grabbing by those in power. More recently the cause of homelessness has been the banks foreclosure on a mortgage. In the present global crisis, trade has plummeted and consequently laid- off workers are embarrassed to face their families. Earthquakes and tsunamis are but two of the many disasters leaving surviving families homeless. For many, often children, it is the rupture of family relationships which precipitates homelessness. The homeless persons concept of ...

Men are the ones who are backing feminist projects, not women.

The Gift to Stalin Rustem Abdrashov, whose Rebirth Island was the first film from Kazakhstan to win the prestigious FIPRESCI (international critics) prize, sets his new drama in a tiny village in the vast Kazakh steppes. The inhabitants are all considered enemies of the state, but they refuse to allow their outcast status to quash their rebellious acts privileging life and human connectedness. In 1949, railcars holding Jews and other deportees creep eastward into oblivion. Or is it? For young Sasha, salvation comes through a rubric of chance, defiance and love. His enforced rebirth finds him surrounded by a makeshift new clan: his savior and new grandfather, Kasym (veteran actor Nurzhuman Ikhtimbaev), who is Muslim; Verka, the wife of a traitor; Ezhik, a Polish resister; and a gang of orphans—a wilderness family with deep bonds despite habitual harassment from authorities. Rare news comes from Moscow announcing a childrens contest celebrating Stalins 70th birthday. If Sashas original gift wins, he hopes to achieve his parents freedom. Decades pass, and Sasha questions history and his fate: Who are you in the land of your God if a part of your soul was left behind? Gifts allegorical ending will linger long in your heart and mind, likely to raise questions, yet perhaps answer others, such as Kasyms early query, Whose flock are you from?

Prof. Jeremy Waldron - Dignity, rights and responsibilities What difference does a foundation in dignity make to the way we think about rights? In this lecture I will argue that dignity ideas have contributed to a move away from subjective rights, that is, rights conceived as the property of the individual, which individuals can use or bargain away as they please. Some commentators deplore this move (referring, for example, to recent decisions about prostitution and "dwarf-tossing"). I shall argue that the rejection of "subjective" rights has long been a feature of the natural rights, constitutional rights, and human rights movements and that this renewed emphasis should, on the whole, be welcomed. I will also connect these themes to recent efforts in Britain and elsewhere to emphasize "responsibilities" as well as rights. From some points of view, this looks like a renewed focus upon social duty. But it may also be read as a particular way of conceiving of rights, associating rights with roles and tasks (like parenthood and citizenship) which, though vested in the individual and privileging his or her decisions, are not simply valued as occasions for willful indulgence or caprice.
