Bloomberg To Legalize Livery Cab Street Hails - THORNE Hailing a livery cab will be just like hailing a yellow cab if Mayor Bloomberg gets his way with a revolutionary new plan for how New Yorkers get around town. In his State of the City address tomorrow the Mayor is expected to call for legalizing what has long been illegal. He wants livery cabs to be allowed to pick up street fares without pre-arrangement outside of Manhattan. New York's Taxi Workers Alliance calls such a plan unacceptable. For taxi drivers it would usher in a wave of competition. They worry such a move would immediately cut into their income. The organization released this statement tonight: "We are stunned by the Mayor's proposal to turn liveries into taxis in the outer boroughs. Legalizing an illegal activity because it's been done for so long will immediately cut into fares, especially during the rush hours when yellow cab drivers who live in the outer boroughs pick up fares at the beginning or end of their shifts. And as liveries bring more riders into Manhattan, what guarantee do we have that the city will stop the illegal activities in Manhattan or the airports? Already, the city has turned a blind eye on such activity throughout Manhattan and the airports which cuts deep into taxi driver incomes. This is a slippery slope with long-term implications.
