  • Hairy Crazy Ants Invade Mississippi In 2009, we first discovered populations of Nylanderia pubens, the hairy crazy ant in Han*** County, Mississippi. By the following year, 2010, we had found it in at least 7 sites in Jackson County, MS. This exotic species is thought to be native to South America. Since 2000, it has become widespread in Florida, having been found in at least 20 counties, and in Texas, where it has been reported from 18 counties thus far. More recently, it has been reported from two parishes in Louisiana. For the last few years, this ant has been called by a number of common names including the Caribbean crazy ant, Rasberry crazy ant, and the hairy crazy ant and by differrent scientific names as well such as Paratrechina sp. nr. pubens, Nylanderia sp. nr. pubens, N. sp. nr. fulva, etc. However, specimens from the TX, LA, and MS all appear to be the same species as the one in FL, which is being called Nylanderia pubens, the hairy crazy ant. So, until the name is resolved, I am simply referring to this species as N. pubens, although I recognize that that name could change in the future. The WHO says forty percent of the world's population is now at risk in more than one hundred countries. Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific are the most affected. Dengue is also found in Africa, the Americas and the eastern Mediterranean. There is no vaccine against dengue and no special treatment. Scott Ritchie of James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, says control efforts target the mosquitoes that spread dengue. He says the only way to control it is through the use of pesticides chemicals and perhaps community education. But some mosquitoes are getting resistant to those pesticides.   • How Many People Have Ever Lived on Earth? The question of how many people have ever lived on Earth is a perennial one among information calls to PRB. One reason the question keeps coming up is that somewhere, at some time back in the 1970s, a now-forgotten writer made the statement that 75 percent of the people who had ever been born were alive at that moment. This factoid has had a long shelf life, even though a bit of reflection would show how unlikely it is. For this "estimate" to be true would mean either that births in the 20th century far, far outnumbered those in the past or that there were an extraordinary number of extremely old people living in the 1970s. But if we judge the idea that three-fourths of people who ever lived are alive today to be a ridiculous statement, have demographers come up with a better estimate? What might be a reasonable estimate of the actual percentage?   • Libya mission great success, says NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the NATO secretary general, has hailed the end of the alliance's military intervention in Libya. Rasmussen, who travelled to Tripoli, spoke to Al Jazeera about NATO's decision to end its mission in Libya, where it had operated under a UN Security Council mandate to protect civilians there.
