Pollination of flowers A flower, sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants (plants of the division Magnoliophyta, also called angiosperms). The biological function of a flower is to mediate the union of male sperm with female ovum in order to produce seeds. The process begins with pollination, is followed by fertilization, leading to the formation and dispersal of the seeds. *source wikipedia
Orchid pollination through ***ual deception - Nikon D3s A short clip showing a male of the solitary bee Colletes cunicularius (Hym. Colletidae) attempting copulation with the flower labellum of the orchid Ophrys arachnitiformis. The orchid does not produce any reward of any kind but manages to attract its exclusive pollinator through the emission of a particular kind of floral scent that mimics the female *** pheromone of one particular solitary bee species. The chemical mimicry is fairly accurate, the orchids emit the same odour compounds as the female bees and the males find the orchids even more irresistible than their own females. I have published several articles on this system, see eg /cgi/content/abstract/mcp208 and /content/105/21/7484.abstract Video shot with the Nikon D3s + Nikkor 105mm VR at ISO 200 and f/32

Governor Corbett Proclaims June 20-26 as 'Pollinator Week' - 6/20/2011 Agriculture Department Urges Public to Help Save Pollinating Insects Critical to Farmers and Food Industry Governor Corbett Proclaims June 20-26 as 'Pollinator Week' Harrisburg -- To highlight the vital role that pollinating insects play in Pennsylvania's agriculture industry, state officials today broke ground on a pollinator garden at the Department of Agriculture's headquarters in Harrisburg. The garden, which will be planted by an existing water retention garden, will be a habitat for pollinators including bees, beetles, flies, moths and butterflies. "Pennsylvania's leading industry -- agriculture -- is dependent on the work of insects that pollinate 80 percent of the world's crops," said Agriculture Secretary George Greig. "One-third of the food we eat is a direct result of pollination, so it is critical to remind all citizens they can and should play a role in protecting declining pollinator populations that set fruit and produce seeds for the future." Greig suggested that residents can help protect pollinators by becoming backyard or small-scale beekeepers, rescuing -- rather than exterminating -- unwanted bees, planting pollinator gardens and promoting diverse floral landscapes, and increasing use of native plants in mixed gardenscapes. He added that the value of the pollination services of honey bees and other pollinators is estimated at more than $76 million each year in Pennsylvania. Threats to the health of pollinators include loss of suitable habitat and ...

Flowers and their friends - National Pollinator Week, Tx Plants and animals exist in an extremely complex web of interconnections. Most flowering plants are pollinated by animals -- primarily insects. Pollinating insects are essential to our gardens, to most of the earth's flowering plants, and to people who are dependent, like every organism on the web of life. There is overwhelming evidence that wild pollinators are declining. Fortunately, there are things that each of us can do to reverse this trend. National Pollinator week is intended to bring attention to the problem AND what we can do: plant native plants, with blooming times that overlap, offer habitats for insect nesting and egg-laying, provide habitats for hibernation and overwintering, and limit the use of poisonous chemicals. Pollinator research ramps up as bee colony numbers decline In the last several years, beekeepers across the country have seen the overall number of pollinator bee colonies drop dramatically. By each winter's end, about 3 out of every 10 colonies die out. The reasons are numerous, but many look at the use of pesticides as a main cause. To make matters worse, in 2006 an apiary owner in Lewisburg, Pa., alerted Penn State researchers of a new problem, now known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). This mysterious condition causes massive numbers of honeybee colonies vanish without any trace. "Honeybees and other pollinating insects are essential because they are responsible for one out of every three bites of food you eat," said Diana Cox-Foster, Penn State professor of entomology. "More than 80 percent of all flowering plants depend on our pollinators for survival." Cox-Foster and other Penn State experts' responses to threats against pollinator survival led them to host the first International Conference on Pollinator Biology, Health and Policy, held July 24-28, 2010, at Penn State's University Park campus. In addition, the University founded a new Center for Pollinator Research. In this video, hear from the pollinator who discovered the disorder and from entomology experts trying to determine what is threatening the future of pollinating insects -- and, ultimately, much of our nation's domestic food supply. Datura blooming + pollinators--1'13" time lapse I took my camera and tripod out into the field behind my house in Big Water, UT, turned it on to a sacred datura plant with flowers that looked ready to bloom, picked one to focus on, and walked away. Half an hour later (8:40-9:10 pm MDST, July 22, 2010) here's what I got! This shows 28 minutes time-lapsed down to 1 minute 13 seconds. I was expecting moth pollinators. That's not what we see here! Think they are carpenter bees. The music is "Meyer 1B" from Appalachian Journey by Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, & Mark O'Connor. I was lucky. This was the only one that bloomed that evening, and the next evening they didn't reach full bloom until after dark! I may try again sometime, though, when it's less breezy.

NATIVE POLLINATORS Several years ago, people both in the US and in Europe and in other places in the world noticed that honeybee colonies were not doing that well. Bees were dying and disappearing and it was affecting the people who keep bees for businesses and it started to threaten the pollination of crops which we all depend on for our fruits and vegetables. This phenomenon was described as colony-collapse disorder, or CCD. Because of increased demand and decreased supply, the cost of honeybee hives rose dramatically. In PA growers were used to paying thirty-five dollars per colony and that price has now gone up to over one hundred dollars per colony. And there are many, many research projects going on around the world trying to discover the cause of CCD.
What's the buzz about pollinators? Pollinators are very important creatures, responsible for every third bite of food a person eats. Bees, birds, bats, and even flies all play an important role in ensuring the health and viability of plants and food crops. Learn about their importance and what we all can do to conserve these valuable animals.

Flower Pollination Like all living things, plants reproduce to ensure future generations. But since plants can't move from place to place, they need a way to transfer pollen from one plant to another. Wind is a major pollinator, but it acts unselectively. Insects, on the other hand, pollinate flowers with precision. The bright colors and strong fragrances of flowers attract insects. Once lured to the flowers, insects discover pollen and nectar. Bees, butterflies and other insects gather pollen and nectar to feed themselves and their young. As insects move from plant to plant, they transfer pollen from one flower to the next. Fertilization occurs and seeds are formed. Over time, flowers have developed colors, smells and shapes, that successfully entice insects. At the same time, insects have developed features and behavior that make them more effective pollinators. mdc.mo.gov
