  • MIT Physics Demo -- Microwave Polarization A polarized microwave emitter and a polarized microwave receiver face each other on a table. At first, the emitter and receiver are polarized in the same direction (up-down), and all the emitted signal gets received. When a metal comb in inserted between them, with the teeth pointed down, the signal is blocked. This is because the microwaves are polarized in the same direction that the teeth are pointing, creating small currents in the metal that reflect the microwaves backwards. When the comb teeth are turned horizontally, the signal passes through undisturbed. When the receiver is turned 90 degrees, no signal is received. However, when the comb is inserted at a 45 degree angle, some signal passes through. Light may be polarized in some cases, that means that it can take a characteristic orientation. For example, the sunlight reflected from this surface is polarized in such a way that it is filtered by these sunglasses if I wear them horizontally on my nose. If I turn my head, I am dazzled by the reflected light. So, how could we explain this ? Firstly, we need to know that a polaroid film is deposited on these sunglasses. A polaroid film is in fact a bunch of molecules that are arranged parallelly on the glass of the spectacles. Secondly, we take advantage of a scientific representation of light. Light is composed of tiny particles, that we call photons. In quantum physics, a photon is represented by a little spinning arrow. One way to understand light is then to visualize it as a flux of little spinning arrows guided by a wave. When an arrow bounces from a reflecting surface, it affects its spinning direction. Before the reflection, the arrow is spinning in a random direction.   • Polarization of Light and Microwaves (Quantum Physics) A phenomenon that can not be adequately explained by classical physics. Radio waves, light, X-rays and gamma rays are all electromagnetic radiation. The classical visualization of the polarization of a wave is that the electric field is oscillating in one plane, like a stretched rope. A polarizing filter can be thought of as like a venetian blind. When the rope is oscillating in the same plane as the blind, it can pass through. When it is at right angles, it is blocked. This classical visualisation soon breaks down. Firstly, an electromagnetic wave passes through a polarizer when its electric field is at right angles to the 'slats' and is blocked when it is parallel. Another example is that of three crossed polarizers. This is shown in the movie.

Because of the way it is designed, some forms of cellophane tape are able to rotate the axis of polarization of the wavelengths (ie, color) of polarized light different amounts. In the demonstration, a polaroid filter is placed upon the glass panel of a classroom style overhead projector. Light passing through the filter becomes polarized. Different sectors of the taped glass will rotate the axes of polarization of the different wavelengths of light different amounts. A second filter is then placed over the taped glass. This second filter only allows through wavelengths (ie colors) of light whose axis of polarization line up with the transmitting axis of the filter. Thus, different sectors appear different colors when viewed through both filters.
