  • AVE MARIA !!! GRATIA PLENA !!! HOLY MOTHER OF GOD !! QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE !!! ALL HAIL MARY !!! 876 Intrinsically linked to the sacramental nature of ecclesial ministry is its character as service. Entirely dependent on Christ who gives mission and authority, ministers are truly "slaves of Christ,"392 in the image of him who freely took "the form of a slave" for us.393 Because the word and grace of which they are ministers are not their own, but are given to them by Christ for the sake of others, they must freely become the slaves of all.394 877 Likewise, it belongs to the sacramental nature of ecclesial ministry that it have a collegial character. In fact, from the beginning of his ministry, the Lord Jesus instituted the Twelve as "the seeds of the new Israel and the beginning of the sacred hierarchy."395 Chosen together, they were also sent out together, and their fraternal unity would be at the service of the fraternal communion of all the faithful: they would reflect and witness to the communion of the divine persons.396 For this reason every bishop exercises his ministry from within the episcopal college, in communion with the bishop of Rome, the successor of St. Peter and head of the college. So also priests exercise their ministry from within the presbyterium of the diocese, under the direction of their bishop. 878 Finally, it belongs to the sacramental nature of ecclesial ministry that it have a personal character. Although Christ's ministers act in communion with one another, they also always act in a personal way. Each one is called personally: "You ...

  • MON RIVERA Y SU ORQUESTA Bailando Plena Don Mon was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico (at the Rio Cañas Arriba "barrio" in the outskirts of the city, close to the place Eugenio María de Hostos was born) in 1899, and lived in the working class Barcelona barrio of the city proper. He was a janitor and handyman at the nearby University of Puerto Rico - Mayagüez for more than 40 years, and was well loved by the campus community. Known as "'Rate" by his closest friends, Don Mon gained a strong reputation as a composer of plenas, a musical genre considered the "musical newspaper of the barrio". He assembled impromptu plena jams in the neighborhood, which were so widely known that they were preserved for posterity in the documentary film "Plena " (1956) by Amilcar Tirado (Don Mon appears at the last segment, improvising lyrics). Two of Don Mon's most famous plenas, "Askarakatiskis" (sometimes referred to as "Karacatis Ki") and "El Gallo Espuelérico" (loosely translated as "The Spurless Rooster") were humorous takes on real life events. On the first one Don Mon told the story of Rafael, a gambler who loses all his money rolling dice and is then assaulted by his wife Luz María with a broomstick, while their daughters laugh the incident off (one of the girls' laughter is the basis for the song's name). "El Gallo Espuelérico" tells the story of Américo, a guy who brags boastfully about a game*** he carried with him to a fight. The bird is killed soon after the fight starts (Don Mon claimed once that the winner was his ...

  • ANTONIO CABAN VALE 'EL TOPO' Plena Pa' Maelo.wmv Singer, songwriter and poet, affectionately known as "El Topo", was born on 22 November 1942 in the small town of Moca, on the western end of Puerto Rico. He moved to Rio Piedras, in the metropolitan area of San Juan, in 1961, to pursue his studies at the University of Puerto Rico. It was there that Cabán Vale first became known as "El Topo" and where he published his first poems in a student literary review called "Guajana". In 1966 he graduated with a BA in arts and social science and began working as a teacher in the public school system. Wishing to touch people through his poetry, he began to write music during the 1970's to reach more people. Cabán even formed a band called "Taoné" that performed his compositions of poetry as music. Cabán was also a performer in that group and gained valuable experience as a singer during that time. As the "nueva canción" style washed over Puerto Rico, Cabán became a well noted composer. His simple yet inspirational verses enchanted listeners. Songs such as "Flor de amapola", "Qué bonita luna", and "Solina, Solina", helped give impetus to the nueva canción style of popular music, as well as to his own career and fame as a composer. His romantic melodies such as "Canción de los amantes" were popularized in many different versions.

  • LOS CANTORES DE SAN JUAN La Plena De Navidad.wmv Vicente Carattini (November 11, 1939-November 7, 2005), was a renowned singer and composer of Puerto Rican Christmas related songs.Carattini was born and raised in the town of Cidra, Puerto Rico where he received his primary and secondary education. One day, his father saw that young Carattini was fascinated with Puerto Rican folk music and presented him with a Puerto Rican cuatro. A cuatro is a Puerto Rican stringed instrument somewhat similar to a guitar but smaller in size. The Puerto Rican cuatro has five pairs of strings for a total of ten, and is different from the cuatro in other Latin American countries (for example, the Venezuelan cuatro actually has four strings). At the age of nine, Carattini learned how to play the cuatro by asking those in town who knew how to play the instrument to teach him. In 1950, his father gave him a better quality cuatro and a guitar. In 1956, when Carattini was 15 years old, he formed the "Trio Los Juglares", which dedicated themselves to sing boleros. The trio included the vocals of Felito Felix and performed basically in Cidra, however Felito Felix left the following year and the trio was dissolved. Carattini continued to go to school and graduated from the Jesus T. Piñero high school of Cidra. In 1958, he enrolled in the Catholic University of Ponce and after one year transferred to the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras. In 1960, he earned his teacher's certificate and in 1961 his Bachelors of Science degree. He returned to ...
