Chinese character .Pictographs. www.chinese- The origins of Chinese script are shrouded in mystery, and various legends exist to explain its creation. One such legend tells how Cāng Jiē 仓颉, a minister of the Emperor Huáng Dì 黄帝, observed the footprints of birds and animals. He noticed how each one was distinct and recognizable. Inspired by this, Cāng Jiē drew pictures of object ,simplifying them by reducing the number of lines. These were the first pictographs, called xiàng xíng 象形by the Han lexicographer Xǔ Shèn 许慎(30 AD- 124A.D.). Certain items could be represented very well by pictographs, for example: animals; plants; parts of the body etc. As the development of a particular character is traced, we can see that, over time, it tends to lose some of its resemblance to the original.

Imagery and Encoding A project demonstrating the use of imagery in encoding new information into long-term memory. I used Japanese animal characters as the exemplum. The characters were made to look like the animals they represent. Encoding the characters using imagery makes it easier for the mind to recall characters and use them when needed. Because Japanese characters are pictographic by nature, using imagery to encode their meanings is a highly effective way to learn them. (This is how I learned the majority of the Japanese Kanji I know- at least the nouns.) The project illustrates one facet of Cognitive Information Processing theory (CIP).

Hobo signs were a series of symbols also drawn in public places to warn other hobos about the town they were entering-wheather the town would put up with hobos-feed them-Etc. A History of Hebrew Part 8: The Proto-Semitic Alphabet This is a segment of a much larger video production that I am working on and am looking for feedback (positive and negative) on the layout and content. -------------------------- In 1905, a new discovery changed the world's perception of the origins of this Semitic alphabet. Flinders Petrie, a renowned Egyptologist and pioneer in modern archeology, discovered inscriptions of previously unknown symbols at Serabit el-Khadim in the Sinai Peninsula. Dr. Alan H. Gardiner, Another renowned Egyptologist, studied these inscriptions in detail. He discovered that these Sinaitic inscriptions consisted of a total of thirty-two symbols. Because of the limited number of symbols Dr. Gardiner determined that this was an alphabet. Gardiner was then able to easily identify this Sinaitic alphabet as Semitic because of the pictographic nature of this alphabet. The name of each Hebrew letter is a Hebrew word with meaning. The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called the aleph, which means "ox," The tenth letter is called the yud or yad meaning "hand" and the six***th letter is the ayin, a word meaning "eye." Dr. Gardiner found that the letters in these ancient Sinaitic inscriptions were pictures of the very names of the Hebrew letters. The image of an ox head was the letter aleph, the image of the hand was the letter yad and the image of an eye was the letter ayin. This relationship between the pictograph and the names of the Semitic letters, Dr. Gardiner proposed, proved that this was ...

Primitive emoticons Observing Palaeolithic rupestre painting in Europe and Australia, South Africa and India, we can see some incredible similarities: it's possible to notice a sort of global Palaeolithic pictography A cultural response to the dialectics between Global and No Global and the search for a Paleo Global language, proof of the common ancient expressive roots of humankind. The enigmatic signs of 20th-century avant-garde seem to indicate a new language, primal and global, the language of a new civilization, no longer limited to the west. On the one hand the artists discovered and fell in love with the language of extra-European art, in particular primitive art, while on the other they gave birth to a proliferation of signs associated with the unconscious, as if each artist was creating a pictographic alphabet to describe a previous existence. Messenger Emoticons introduce pictograms in the global digital commmunication.
A History of Hebrew Part 12: The Alphabet and Language Connection This is a segment of a much larger video production that I am working on and am looking for feedback (positive and negative) on the layout and content. ___________________ When we wish to find the definition of an English word we go to a dictionary. While this is also true with Hebrew words, there are additional methods of determining the meaning of a Hebrew word. One such method, which has been previously demonstrated, is to examine its roots which provide additional insight into that word. Another method is to examine the meaning of the letters used to write that word. Each biliteral, or parent, root is composed of two letters and these two letters in themselves provide meaning to the word. The Hebrew word av, is spelled aleph-beyt. The word aleph means "ox." The ox, and this letter, represents the idea of "strength." In the original pictographic script this letter was an image of an Ox head. The word beyt means tent, or house. The tent, and this letter, represents the idea of "home." In the original pictographic script the beyt was an image of the nomadic Hebrews tent. This image includes the entrance and the wall inside that separates the men's side from the women's side. When the meanings of these two letters are combined we have the meaning "the strength of the home" and descriptive of "the father." The Hebrew word BN is spelled beyt-nun. As we have just found, this letter represents the home. The word nun means "seed," but also represents the idea of "continuing ...

The Way of Yahweh (Part 2 of ?) The first verse we will be looking at is Genesis 18:19, which in the Hebrew reads, "כי ידעתיו למען אשר יצוה את בניו ואת ביתו אחריו ושמרו דרך יהוה לעשות צדקה ומשפט " The KJV of the Bible translates this verse as, "For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment." We will be examining many of the words within this verse to provide their Hebraic understanding and in turn learn the concrete meanings of each of them. Know The first word we are going to examine is the word "know." If we have met another person we would say "I know him." But the Hebrew word translated as "know" is not a casual knowledge of another, but an intimate knowledge. This is the verb ידע in its ancient pictographic script. When we look at the use of this word in Genesis 4:1 we can understand the depth of intimacy this word implies. "And the man 'knew' his wife Eve and she conceived." The parent root of this verb is דע. The first letter is a picture of a door and the second letter is a picture of an eye. Together these letters mean "the door of the eye." Only someone you intimately know can you get close to and look into their eyes, the door into their soul. A more precise meaning of this word is "to intimately and completely know." Command The Hebrew word behind "command" is the verb צוה. The first letter in this word is the tsade and is a picture of a trail, our first glimpse of the concrete nature of this ...
What Is The True Meaning of "Evil"? Ra` is Hebrew for evil and when you put the symbol for "destroy" (the Shin, pronounced as in Martin and Charlie Sheen) in the middle of Ra, you get the Hebrew word, Resha`, the simplistic meaning of wickedness. The word Ra` may mean evil in English, but since it can be attributed to Egypt's Ra deity of the Sun, its not a stretch to include the meaning of Sun-worship for the Hebrew word, Ra`. The pictographic meaning of Resha` is the destructiveness of Ra`, or the destructiveness of Sun-worship. The pictographic meaning the plural word for wickedness in Hebrew is R'sha`im or the destructive ones of Ra; or another way to put it would be, the destructive ones of Sun-worship. Not that wickedness destroys the act of sun-worship; no just the opposite, sun-worship is destructive to our lives.

The sad thing is I know it will never be - Pictographic adaptation of a love poem Even though your words hate me your heart is made of ice and your eyes despise me I cannot stop myself From thinking my love is stronger than a thousand waves As my mother used to say: I just want to see you smile today Let me take your hand and leave this god forsaken land Don't you realize my love is like the sky simply watching where you stand I can see how your eyes are like stars shining this bright, bright light I will fight a thousand wars just as Napoleon has simply to be at your side The sad thing is I know it will never be
European ancient terms for global language The EURO project started with the Eureka conference and the Scientific Research Show of Milan in 1988, long before the term EURO was coined for the single European currency, and the goal was to develop an international communications code, combining the common roots of European languages with universally acknowledged pictographic icons. EUROFUTURISM is an original model of electronic communication inspired by Italian and Russian futurism, hailing to the artistic interactions between Italy and Russia of the 20th-century. It is the result of a study done at the Department of Information Science of Milan University, and was presented to Gorbaciov in 1988 at the "Italy 2000" exhibition.
Ghost Writers in the Sky This song is about the development of the modern alphabet, starting with the very fist writing system and ending in modern times. (Have you noticed that my hair and beard blend into the shirt and chair?) Lyrics here (poor- habet) or below: When wedge-shaped writing first was born They wrote it with a weed And it was called cuneiform They just used clay and reeds Egyptians needed holy writ Some carvings of their own And thus invented hieroglyphs To put on Rose Etta's Stone. Yippie-ki-oooohhhh Yippie-ki-yaaaaaay Ghost Writers in the sky The Chinese chose their letters well The future for to see They carved them into broken bones And inside fortune cookies The ancients wrote with images With pictographic words Then came phonetic alphabets For each symbol, sounds were heard. Semitic scribes inscribed their lines Without A, E, I, O or U The Phoenicians took their phonetics And papyrus from Byblos too. The Greeks grabbed the alpha-bet And added vowel signs The Latin warriors sacked the Greeks And made their Roman rhymes From Rome it spread the whole world o'er And comes to us today We use these signs in all our books In all we write and say. When u im or txt ur friends Or lol ur laughs Remember, those emoticons Are only pictographs.
TIME. SPACE. BEING. Installation by Yueh-Mei Cheng. TIM E. SPAC E. BEIN G. - Neither One Nor Many - Installation by Yueh-mei Cheng The idea of installation about "TIME. SPACE. BEING." has been derived from the numerous talks with my studio mentor and my own meditative experiences. The installation itself is a visual model created to question the existential reality, in which time, space, and being are inseparable and interwoven. According to Einstein, "Space and time are not conditions in which we live; they are simply modes in which we think." In art, it is the mere reality. The artistic internal vision expressed in pictographic shapes and the metaphoric symbols invokes ancient mystics. They are beings beyond the ordinary dimensions of perception. The imagined external appearance of form, color, light and sound is the materialized mode. The twenty-six masks are internal experiences in display. This installation offers the conditions to invite each individual in a unique position to play in a mind game of 3D visual chess.
A History of Hebrew Part 9: Dating the Semitic Alphabet This is a segment of a much larger video production that I am working on and am looking for feedback (positive and negative) on the layout and content. -------------------------- The inscriptions discovered in the past century and a half, have been accurately dated through the advances of archeology. The original Semitic alphabet with its pictographic letters, can be divided into three periods. The early Semitic alphabet existed between the 20th and 12th centuries BC. However, note that the 20th century date is based on the oldest inscriptions found thus far and it is possible that future discoveries may push the date of the Semitic alphabet back even farther into history. The middle Semitic alphabet, the phoenician and old Hebrew, was in use between the 10th and 4th century BC. The late Semitic alphabet, the square aramaic script, was in use between 5th century BC and into modern times with the modern Hebrew alphabet that is used to this day. Early Semitic Inscriptions To date, the Wadi El-Hol inscriptions found in southern Egypt, are the oldest Semitic inscriptions found and date to between the 19th and 20th centuries BC. The Sinaitic inscriptions from the Sinai penninsula date to about the 15th century BC. Middle Semitic Inscriptions The Elah Valley Fortress, Tel-Zayit abecedary and the gezer calendar are dated to about the 10th century BC. Between the 12th and 10th centuries BC, the Greek alphabet used the same middle semitic script. The Mesha Stele (or Moabite stone ...

Tibet - Bon-Dongba symbolism Dongba is the only living pictographic script , currently in use by the Naxi (Na-khi) minority in Yunnan. Besides the illiterate statements of the Chinese government, that Dongba-script was 'invetnted' by a single chinese individual (Mou-pao A-tsung, 1494-1553), modern study of language shows evidence that the Dongba pictography was heavily influenced by the pre-Buddhistic Bon traditions. Many of the symbols have been identified to have proto Mongolian origin . 1. Seaver J. Milnor (2005) A Comparison Between the Development of the Chinese Writing System and Dongba Pictographs. ReNZo © "I saw what I Dreamed and the Pigment Ran" Renzo was born on April 11, 1953 in Martinez, California and raised in the state's Bay Area within a conservative and strictly religious environment. As the father of "Lucid Realism", an artistic style that draws heavily on Renzo's experiences with the indigenous cultures of Australia, Costa Rica, and Mexico as it expresses the commonality of the human experience through symbolic, abstract, and figurative expressionism, he encourages the viewer to perceive the cohesion between the waking and dreaming states. Renzo's paintings and sculptures express and communicate his observations of what he believes to be the basic qualities that separate humanity from the inanimate objects that surround it while maintaining their interconnectivity. "Over the years I have developed an affinity to communication through symbols/pictographs; visual language." Renzo's painted images are opaque with transparent overlays to form composites, ranging from the figurative to abstract expressionism. He always uses highly fluid paints, because of his connection with their unique qualities on the canvas. Building layer upon layer in a process of construction and illustrated depth, Renzo depicts metaphors and variables on relationships, spirituality, intent, and even tribal similes. His practice of artistic alchemy, use of brush strokes, and habit of scratching at the surface of the canvas to produce a primal nature to these ...

Norval Morrisseau (1981) To be a Shaman... Answers within Questions... What is a Shaman? Why does a Shaman artist paint? What is Shamanistic Art? Why did Norval Morrisseau repudiate the Woodland School? Below are passages from Scroll Two of the e-book, Woodland Gold, that consider certain possibilities. The fourth question is complex. Why do you think Norval Morrisseau repudiated the Woodland School? Was he justified? When viewed as a personal or family talisman Shamanistic art empowers while it protects. Traditional pictographic art and birchbark scrolls are two-dimensional symbolic renderings that tell an archetypal story. A powerful alignment takes place in those who know how to interpret the colours and symbols in relation to one another. A vibrational sense of oneness with the archetype itself. Shamanistic art is a creative response to a fundamental sentient need to maintain health and well-being. Through artistic expression, a Shaman calls into play the triple faculties of imagination, intuition and inspiration in order to commune with Spirit. The Great Spirit in turn extends to the tribe the power to consciously harmonize environmental forces. When appreciating Woodland Art in essence we join the tribe vibrationally, and through that connection discover the power within ourselves. Shamanistic art primarily focuses on the relationship between the "Creator" and the "Created" using symbols to convey natural truths. Most artworks are two dimensional (pictographic) designs that one does not look into as one ...

Leading Chinese Artists Visit Sydney A delegation of leading Chinese artists and calligraphers visited Sydney, Australia in July from Guangxi, China. The group held an exhibition of their work at the City of Sydney Creative Arts Centre and were welcomed to Sydney by Ric Vatner, Publisher and Editor of eSTV. Calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters. To understand calligraphy, one must first know something about Chinese characters. The various nationalities in the world have created their own languages, but the Chinese have created an independent calligraphic art. Why? The reason is mainly related to the features of the language. Languages fall into two systems; one expresses sound; the other expresses meaning. The cuneiform writing of the Sumerian, the Katakana in the Japanese language, English, French, Russian, German and Latin-these languages are phonetic. The language of the sacred books of ancient Egypt, the pictographic language of Crete, the Chinese language and the language of the Dongba nationality are all ideographic.
