Punctuated Phylogeny The conflict between a traditional view of slow evolution over time and the punctuated equilibrium view of bursts of change over small amounts of geological time may not be a real conflict. The ability of certain genes to regulate gene expression and small changes in these having large effects in organism structure can account for this. There are mechanisms in place that keep many species from varying by large amounts in a visible manner, but this does not stop the DNA from changing in less visible ways. It is the phylogeny of the organsims that is punctuated, not the DNA itself.

15. Phylogeny and Systematics Principles of Evolution, Ecology and Behavior (EEB 122) The Tree of Life must be discovered through rigorous ***ysis. Genetic information is crucial because appearances can be deceiving, and species that look similar can prove to be genetically very dissimilar and not share recent common ancestors. Two criteria, used to determine what the "correct" Tree is, are simplicity and whether the tree maximizes the probability of observing what we actually see. Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2009.

Falsifying Phylogeny Systematic phylogenetics, -also known as Cladistic taxonomy- is the most profound evidence there is indicating our evolution from common ancestry, but very few people understand it. Since I don't see any other science advocates actively concerned with promoting the importance of this field of study, then perhaps I have found my niche.

Lecture 45: What makes a good programmer? - Richard Buckland UNSW The last week of the first computing course course. In this lecture we start to answer the question "What makes a good programmer?" which students have been asking on the forum for a few weeks (what wonderful students!) We then consider how this course fits into the whole computing degree and some ideas about life and learning after leaving university. Craftsmanship. Science. Design. Looking back over what we learned in the course. The first few weeks. Also: striving to be a good photographer. patterns and trees. never giving up. John Stuart Mill. Brave new World. Henri Cartier Bresson. Crazy Idea: Ontogeny recapitulates Phylogeny in computing education.

Morphing Arachnids Using Phylogenies for Time Travel Each feature of the living species at the tips of a phylogenetic tree can be mapped onto the tree to determine where evolutionary changes likely occurred. Then, at each branching point (or internal node), the features can be blended together to form am overall picture of what the ancestral species may have looked like. In this video from the Peabody Museums Travels in the Great Tree of Life exhibit, the left hand side of the animation shows a phylogenetic tree of selected arachnids (spiders, scorpions, and their relatives); on the right hand side you can see an animation that shows what the ancestral species may have looked like at different points in the tree. Travels in the Great Tree of Life" was produced for the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History with the support from the US National Science Foundation through the CIPRes and Angiosperm Tree of Life Programs.

Caniform Carnivore Cladogram Construction Part III of the 'Falsifying Phylogeny' series; This one explains how one must first address the indications of evolutionary phylogeny rather than ignoring all aspects of common ancestry altogether, (as Ray Comfort did) and instead proposing some weird straw-man parody of evolution in which no ancestry of any kind is even involved. ~ Here is the list of examples used in the Carnivora skulls image: (1) St. Bernard (2) Collie (3) Boston terrier (4) maned wolf (5) Asian palm civet (6) Arctic fox (7) bull terrier (8) chow chow (9) spotted hyena (10) badger (11) lion (12) black-backed jackal (13) Coatimundi (14) lycaon (15) American black bear (16) Great Dane (17) raccoon dog (18) California sea lion (19) Chihuahua (20) dire wolf ~ Source studies: Multiple and Ancient Origins of the Domestic Dog ~ The source of the Canine cladogram: ~ Source of my own cladogram: Mitogenomic ***yses of caniform relationships ~ Molecular Phylogeny of the Carnivora (Mammalia): Assessing the Impact of Increased Sampling on Resolving Enigmatic Relationships
