Fish of the day Ep.7 Tiger Oscar Cichlid mastermindnews- New fish of the day. Tiger Oscar Cichlid Astronotus ocellatus is a species of fish from the cichlid family known under a variety of common names including oscar, tiger oscar, velvet cichlid, or marble cichlid. In South America, where the species naturally resides, A. ocellatus are often found for sale as a food fish in the local markets. The fish can also be found in other areas including China, Australia, and the United States. Although its slow growth limits its potential for aquaculture, it is considered a popular aquarium fish. The species was originally described by Louis Agassiz in 1831 as Lobotes ocellatus, as he mistakenly believed the species was marine, later work assigned the species to the genus Astronotus. The species also has a number of junior synonyms: Acara compressus, Acara hyposticta, Astronotus ocellatus zebra, and Astronotus orbiculatus. A. ocellatus have been reported to grow to about 45 centimetres (18 in) in length and 1.6 kilograms (3.5 lb) in weight. The wild caught forms of the species are typically darkly coloured with orange ringed-spots or ocelli on the caudal peduncle and on the dorsal fin. It has been suggested that these ocelli function to limit fin-nipping by piranha (Serrasalmus spp.) which co-occur with A. ocellatus in its natural environment. The species is also able to rapidly alter its colouration, a trait which facilitates ritualised territorial and combat behaviours amongst conspecifics. Juvenile A. ocellatus have a ...

Neurologic Exam Cranial Nerves Anatomy : Cranial Nerve 3 and 4 Cranial Nerve 3 and 4 These cranial nerves give us a view of the midbrain. The 3rd nerve in particular can give important anatomical localization because it exits the midbrain just medial to the cerebral peduncle. The 3rd nerve controls eye adduction (medial rectus), elevation (superior rectus), depression (inferior rectus), elevation of the eyelid (levator palpebrae superioris), and parasympathetics for the pupil. The 4th CN supplies the superior oblique muscle, which is important to looking down and in (towards the midline).

Jet Black Ranchu The ranchu is a hooded variety of fancy goldfish developed in Japan. It is referred to as the "king of goldfish" by the Japanese. The ranchu is a highly regarded fancy goldfish in Japan. Compared to lionheads, ranchus have a more downturned tail and tail fin. Although similar to lionheads, ranchus have more-arched backs and have much shorter tails that are tucked-in at a sharp angle. A ranchu has an egg-shaped body with a deep belly that is between 5/8 to 3/4 the length of the fish. This goldfish does not have a dorsal fin and breeding standards require that the back should not have any vestiges of the dorsal fin on it. The back should be rounded and not flat, as in the case of lionheads. The area of the caudal peduncle should curve sharply downwards to meet the tail. The caudal peduncle itself should be broad and neither lengthy or too short (a properly formed caudal peduncle avoids swimming motion impairments to this type of goldfish). The ranchu's tail meets the caudal peduncle at a forty-five degree angle, giving the fish a unique swimming motion. Furthermore, the tail lobes are rounded, and all other finnage are paired

Cavernoma Extraction from midbrain, by Jon White, MD Cavernomas are benign arterial venous malformations... until they bleed. They will bleed again. In the compact cerebral peduncle bleeding can cause major neurological injury; so these lesions should be excised. They may also occur on the face, usually on the eyelids. Though larger have been seen, they usually range in size from grain of rice to that of a golf ball. The surface of acrochordons may be smooth or irregular in appearance. Often, they are raised from the surface of the skin on a fleshy stalk called a peduncle. Microscopically, an acrochordon consists of a fibrovascular core, sometimes also with fat cells, covered by an unremarkable epidermis. Skin tags are harmless, although they are sometimes irritated by clothing or jewelry and can interfere with shaving and other routine grooming. Why and how skin tags form is not entirely known, but there are correlations with age and obesity. They are more common in people with diabetes mellitus and in pregnant women. It is estimated that by age 70, up to 59 percent of people have them. A genetic component (causation) is thought to exist. Rarely, they can be associated with the Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Dr. Rothfeld is an expert in removing skin tags with different cosmetic procedures leaving no scar to a very minimal scar.

Palatal Myoclonuss by Dr. Jogu Siva kumar & Dr.Vasanth PM is caused by a lesion in the triangle of Guillain Molleret (1933), which is composed of the inferior olivary nucleus in the brainstem, the central tegmental tract which connects the olive to the red nucleus in the midbrain, and through the superior olivary peduncle to the contralateral dentate nucleus of the cerebellum. It is felt that the inferior olive enlarges and develops rhythmic discharges when it is denervated by ipsilateral brainstem disease or contralateral cerebellar disease, and is responsible for the palatal myoclonus.

Hervey bay humpback whales or Japanese sushi The humpback whale is one of the rorquals, a family that also includes the blue whale, fin whale, Bryde's whale, sei whale, and minke whale. Rorquals have two characteristics in common: dorsal fins on their backs, and ventral pleats running from the tip of the lower jaw back to the belly area. The shape and color pattern on the humpback whale's dorsal fin and flukes (tail) are as individual in each animal as are fingerprints in humans. The discovery of this interesting fact changed the course of cetacean research forever, and the new form of research known as "photo-identification," in which individuals are identified, catalogued, and monitored, has led to valuable information about such things as humpback whale population sizes, migration, ***ual maturity, and behavior patterns. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION The head of a humpback whale is broad and rounded when viewed from above, but slim in profile. The body is not as streamlined as other rorquals, but is quite round, narrowing to a slender peduncle (tail stock). The top of the head and lower jaw have rounded, bump-like knobs, each containing at least one stiff hair. The purpose of these hairs is not known, though they may allow the whale to detect movement in nearby waters. There are between 20-50 ventral grooves which extend slightly beyond the navel. surface characteristics FINS AND FLUKES About 2/3 of the way back on the body is an irregularly shaped dorsal (top) fin. Its flippers are very long, between 1/4 and 1/3 the ...

Lick, Or Not To Lick, That Is The Question: AQUARIUM PIRAN, New Personal Post Stamp Common two-banded seabream (Diplodus vulgaris) The Common two-banded seabream (Diplodus vulgaris) lives in the Mediterranean Sea and along the east coast of the Atlantic all the way from Spain to Senegal at a depth up to 100 m. Its closest relatives are the Annular seabream and the White seabream from which it differs only in colour. They all belong to the Sparidae family. It has a laterally flattened and high-backed body of a silvery grey colour with a large, black band on the distal end of the caudal peduncle. It differs from its cousins in the black band that goes behind the gill cover from left to right. This band reminds of the priests hood which gives it its Slovenian name "Frater". They are common to shallow waters near coasts with flat, vegetated bottoms. They are scattered around and feed in large masses. If one gets close, they flee in all directions. It grows 40 cm long and reaches 1 kg in weight. So far it has been depicted on two stamps. Malta portrayed it in one of the stamps in sheets of six*** different fish (August 25, 1999). The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus used it on 29 March 1996 in a series of four fish. TETRAS Tetra are species of small freshwater fish from Africa, Central America and South America belonging to the biological family Characidae and to its former subfamilies Alestiidae (the "African tetras") and Lebiasinidae. The Characidae are distinguished from other fish by the presence of a small adipose fin between the dorsal fin and caudal fin. Many of these, such as the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), are brightly colored and easy to keep in captivity. Consequently, they are extremely popular for home aquaria. The term tetra is not actually a taxonomic, phylogenetic term. Because of the popularity of tetras in the fishkeeping hobby, many unrelated fish are commonly known as tetras, including species from differing families. Even fish that are vastly different may be called tetras. For example, payara (Hydrolycus scomberoides) is occasionally known as the "sabretooth tetra" or "vampire tetra". Tetras generally have compressed (sometimes deep), fusiform bodies and are typically identifiable by their fins. They ordinarily possess a homocercal caudal fin (a twin-lobbed, or forked, tail fin whose upper and lower lobes are of equal size) and a tall dorsal fin characterized by a short connection to the fishs body.[2] Additionally, tetras possess a long *** fin stretching from a position just posterior of the dorsal fin and ending on the ventral caudal peduncle, and a small, fleshy adipose fin located dorsally between the dorsal and caudal fin. This adipose fin represents the ...

Red Tailed Catfish Red Tailed Catfish The redtail catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, is a pimelodid (long-whiskered) catfish named for its red or orange caudal fin. In Venezuela it is known as cajaro and in Brazil it is known as pirarara.[1] It is the only extant species of the genus Phractocephalus. This fish originates from South America. Despite reaching a large size, this fish is a common aquarium fish. Extinct Phractocephalus Although the redtail catfish is the only living representative of this genus, there are other members that date back to the upper Miocene. P. nassi was described in 2003, and is from Urumaco, Venezuela. Another undescribed member is known to exist from Acre, Brazil.[1] This genus has a minimum age of about 13.5 million years.[1] Distribution and Habitat The redtail catfish is native to the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo river basins of South America.[1] It is found only in fresh water.[2] This fish has also been introduced into Florida, but it is not established.[2] Anatomy Redtail catfish in an aquarium. The redtail catfish has a broad head with a wide mouth. Its body is primarily dark gray with small darker gray spots. The ventral surface is paler. The redtail catfish has three pairs of long barbels. A lateral white band starts at the caudal peduncle and runs anteriorly, tapering to end anywhere from midway along the body to just behind the operculum. The caudal fin is red or orange, giving the fish its common name. The juveniles may be more intensely ...

Platinum Lionhead with Red Eye Lids The lionhead is a hooded variety of fancy goldfish. This fish is the precursor to the ranchu. The tremendous hood or headgrowth and fat cheeks of lionheads give them a facial appearance similar to canine puppies. The "wen" (Chinese term for headgrowth) fully covers the head, cheeks and gill plates of the fish. Furthermore, lionheads have short but deep bodies, and relatively straight or evenly arched bcks without dorsal fins. The finnage, in general, is short. Breeding standards require that the lionheads *** fins are paired, the double tail fin should not droop, and its upper edges should be held away from the body. The tail of a traditional lionhead can be fully separated, partially separated, or webbed. The tail should also meet the caudal peduncle (the area where the body joins the tail) in a fashion that is almost perpendicular to the body. The caudal peduncle is ideally broad, allowing the tail to open when the fish swims. The back of the proper lionhead is quite broad to support the placement of the raspberry-like hood. Hood development may vary but is more pronounced in males. The hood normally takes a year to develop in young fry. Mature male lionheads periodically shed patches of their headgrowths. Lionheads can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length (including finnage) and may have metallic, nacreous or matte scales[4]. They come in a variety of coloration.
