  • Re: The Pedantic Evolution of Consciousness Before we can talk meaningfully about what is implied by an "evolution of consciousness," I think we need to re-evaluate the scope of scientific investigation. We make the assumption without even giving it a thought these days that there is a material world that exists "out there" entirely independent of our consciousness "in here." We go further and assume that "reality" is "out there" and that our consciousness "in here" is some kind of a projection or illusion added to what is real. The problem with the common sense of our age is that it is metaphysically incoherent (because the mental and physical substances have no necessary relationship to one another). If there is a separate world "out there" then we can have absolutely no knowledge of it. The evolution of consciousness may help us understand how subjectivity "in here" and objectivity "out there" are inseparable and in fact have been evolving in concert with one another for as long as there has been anything to evolve.   • The Pedantic Evolution of Consciousness I know the word 'evolution' is used in a number of casual ways to indicate progressive change, usually toward increased complexity, but I want to argue for maintaining some precision in the use of this term. Evolution is best used (in my opinion) to refer to the mechanism by which change takes place through replicating entities being subject to environmental pressure causing differential survival rates (terms like 'competition', and indeed 'survival' are loaded with human interpretive baggage that need not be carried over into the process). The process of evolution as so characterised in an incredibly powerful mechanism with a number of unique features not found in other developmental process, not least of which is that 'value' is built right into the mechanism, not introduced from the outside. For a process to be called evolution I would want it to meet the criteria corresponding to that mechanism, and as far as I can see 'consciousness' doesn't even come close. On a related note, I should say that I think this is not a bad thing at all. Evolution as described above has not morality, no value, not endpoint in mind, and doesn't care about suffering or inequality. In fact biological evolution has actively developed exactly those features as part of its functioning. And whilst I acknowledge that evolution can also provide an account of empathy and altruism I personally would prefer not to leave the development of culture and mind to the whims of the blind watchmaker.

  • The Pedantic Loop (Stopmotion) This is my final grade assignment for animation class and it was my first stop motion ever. The task was assigned with a standard delivery of a one- minute long as minimum duration for the project to be acceptable. I planned originally to make this last about 3 minutes but it turned out to last nearly double the amount. I was being rushed by the fact that I had nearly 10 hours of school, plus with so many other things delaying my efforts for constructing this production has left the final product with rough edges. I'm thinking of re-mastering this animation to fill up the holes that I wasn't able to cover up. In a way I believe that it could've gone better despite my teacher highly approving my work. Nonetheless, he and other students from my school thought it was very well made. It met with all the requirements that my teacher demanded which led to an evident victory. I began to have my doubts about how well would it turn out not knowing if by delivering it late, it would affect my result (it was due December 10, 2010. I gave it to him 3 days later). The teacher enjoyed it so much and he was laughing so hard that he deemed my work LOOOORD OF AAALL the others- - Ahem!... It was among the best in class, I still wanted to see the rest but most of us weren't able to give it to him on time (like me). I've acquired some level of experience and have developed quite a few new techniques in the art of editing. Truth be told, I couldn't have done this without the help of tutorials ...
