Liszt : ' Ave Maria ' and ' Pater noster ' from ' Harmonies poétiques et religieuses ' The less flamboyant pieces from "Harmonies poétiques et religleuses" (1853 version) are not so often played, and I can appreciate that some might find their sentiment saccharine. Given their religious connections, I think the best preparation to play these pieces is to watch on TV some of the special services from the Vatican broadcast on EWTN and elsewhere, and listen to the unsophisticated but fervent singing of the choirs there. It is a world away from the Anglican church music with which I am more familiar, but close, I'm sure, to what Liszt would have heard on his visits to Rome. These two pieces (along with 'Hymne de l'enfant à son réveil') are transcriptions of choral works from the 1840s. I think they make a good pairing, and suit the medium, as they would surely have been intended for domestic performance in an intimate setting. Indeed, the 'Pater noster' ('Our Father, who art in heaven....) is in the style of a Gregorian chant, and both pieces have the Latin texts printed over the score (although, in the case of the Ave Maria, the fit is not always obvious). Shorn of the virtuoso figurations associated with Liszt, these pieces instead present the musical challenge of capturing the intended devotional atmosphere. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear

Caritas Pater est IX (Cheadle) Chant group Psallentes The antiphon Caritas Pater est, for the feast of the Holy Trinity. As sung from late fif***th century Antiphonary B-Gu15. This is from the cd 'Etienne de Liège - In festo sanctissimae Trinitatis' RIC 249. Buy the cd at www.ricercar.be - other discs available as well. Check it out! Chant group Psallentes was founded and is directed by Hendrik Vanden Abeele. The group particularly focuses on late medieval chant. This movie includes holiday-footage of the St Giles church in Cheadle, Staffordshire, England. It's, to quote Simon Jenkins in "England's Thousand Best Churches": "the outstanding English church of the 19th century". The architect was AWN Pugin. "The interior lacks nothing that the late 13th century would have included. The church has a standard plan with a nave, aisles, baptistery to the west and a chancel with chapels to the east." "Not an inch of Cheadle is without paint, carving or gilding. Even the window reveals are meticulously decorated, each shaft picked out in different coloured patterns, like the leggings of a Carpaccio gondolier." (Apart from the wonderful church, reading Jenkins' commentary is a joy in itself...) Sorry for the rather poor video footage - a small handheld camera, you know... www.psallentes.be

Re: Pater Noster by Ysabella Brave My humble response. Seems we were photographing the same sun. Trivia: My video "A Kingly Job -- Burger King, That Is! was shot in the parking lot just before this video: A Kingly Job -- Burger King That Is! BE CAREFUL: If you want to watch the sun realtime, safely from your computer, click on this Nasa link: sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov People have asked my how I took these photos. The answer is very stupidly. Remember in school being told never to look directly at the sun? A kid in my sixth grade class did and he wore an eyepatch for several months thereafter. Lucky not to have been blinded. Well, that admonition goes doubly about looking directly at the sun through a camera lens. I could not see clearly out of my right eye for hours. What I should have done was look though the LCD screen on the camera. I did not use any special filters. The ring effect is a Newton Ring named after Sir Isaac Newton. It is caused by the refraction of light on the glass as you move the camera around. Eventually, you'll find the correct angel for the circular refraction. Anyone standing next to me looking into the sky would not have seen the ring. I also have some Newton Ring video of a reflection in a pond, which I'll be putting up soon. You'll get the same effect if you put a negative in between two regular sheets of glass and put them in an enlarger instead of using a negative carrier. You'll get rings in your image, which can, sometimes be quite interesting. If you don't want ...

Abba Pater ~ Pope John Paul II ~ Glory Be To The Most Blessed Trinity "You, don't be afraid..." The words of the angel of resurrection, said to the women at the empty sepulchre, had become a sort of slogan on the lips of Pope John Paul II, from the solemn beginning of his Peter's ministry. It was recalled by Benedict XVI at Mass, three years after the death of his predecessor: "He repeated them on several occasions to the Church and to mankind en route to 2000 and then through that epoch-making target and beyond, at the dawn of the third millennium", said the Pope: "He always uttered them with unbending determination, first by brandishing the pastoral rod with the Cross on top and then, when his physical energy was dying out, as if clinging on to it, up to that Last Holy Friday, when he took part in the Way of the Cross from his Private Chapel, holding the Cross in his arms." "We cannot forget that last and silent testimony of his love to Jesus", exclaimed the Pontiff, according to whom "even that telling scene of human suffering and faith, on that last Holy Friday, pointed out to believers and to the world the secret of all Christian life." His "Don't be afraid", explained the Holy Father, "was not grounded on human strength nor on success, but only on God's Word, on the Cross and on the Resurrection of Christ." "As he was being deprived of everything, lastly even of his speech, his reliance on Christ became more and more apparent," continued Benedict XVI: "As it happened to Jesus, also for John Paul II, in the end, words surrendered to ...
