  • Please Help Yuffie! Yuffie is a foster Shiba Inu with Shiba Inu Rescue Association. She is 8 months old and has grade 4 luxating patellas (loose knees) in both her rear legs. What this means is that the grooves in her legs where knee caps normally fit in dogs are non-existent in her legs. Her knee caps are locked out of position and even when manually moved back into place pop right back out. This is caused by bad and careless breeding. Yuffie was born in a puppy mill. SIRA is currently fundraising to get her the surgery she needs to put her knees back in place and straighten out her leg bones which have already begun to deform. If left untreated, Yuffie would eventually loose the ability to walk all together. We are commited to keeping that from happening. As you can see in this video, with her knee caps out of place she is unable to extend her legs properly. She stands in a crouched position, limps when she walks and bunny hops when she runs. Surgery will correct this but we need your help to raise the $1600 is will cost. For more information on how you can help Yuffie and our other foster Shibas please visit Shiba Inu Rescue Association's website .

  • DOG PATELLA LUXATION AND PHYSIOTHERAPY = YES! I am a dog physiotherapist (PT), dog sports massage therapist and dog instructor. Have my own practice in Trosa, Sweden. I would like to tell you a charming little story. A dog, 1.5 years of age, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, came to my practice together with her owner in mid April 2009. The dog had recently been to a vet who diagnosed her with medial patella luxation, grade 2-3 (out of 4), both knees. This means that the patella every now and then pops out of its place (trochlear groove) and causes a lot of pain. Surgical corrections needed. The vet suggested operation. Two separate operations would be necessary. The dog was very miserable. Her tail was always downwards, she did not want to walk by herself she wanted someone to carry her most of the time. She was whining and crying all the time. She was such an unhappy little dog. We began with physiotherapy in form of the Keiper underwater treadmill (30 degrees C of pure, clean water), manipulation, expanders and massage. She came 3 times/week for 3 weeks. Thereafter the owner had a new appointment with the vet who had diagnosed her with patella luxation. The vet was very surprised the dog was no longer in need of surgery! Both her pateallas were in place. Two weeks ago the owner called me and said that the dog is still running, jumping and playing with other dogs. The owners also have 4 other dogs. But, this little lady, runs faster than the other dogs and always in front of the other dogs. She has a lot of muscles ...
