T-Racks Roof Bars We have recently had the T-Racks system tested by industry leading testers MIRA. This is a video of the test that took place on the system. The object of the test was to conduct 'city crash test' (nominal 8g for 30ms) in DD ISO/PAS 11154:2006 Annex E, and a '20g' crash test (nominal 20g for 25ms) to determines performance at higher decelerations levels. The assembly is required to remain intact and the carried load securely restrained during these tests. The parts being used were two bars and rear roller assembly with 100kg ballast comprising several sheets of plywood attached to the bars using U-bolts. For the city crash test the assembly was attached to the test fixture using 4 off 8.8 grade M6 bolts, representing the attachment for a VW Transporter T5 roof (worst-case condition). For the '20g' test the bolt size was increased to M8, however the same number of fixings were used The Results - The assembly and ballast remained secure during both 8g and 20g tests. Bentley Mulsanne - The art of color Exacting standards of craftsmanship and technology are employed by Bentleys body assembly team to create the new Mulsannes distinctive, hand-crafted hewn form solid appearance. But this is just a precursor to the painstaking attention to detail afforded to Bentleys new 4-door flagship in the paint facility at the companys headquarters in Crewe, England. The new Mulsanne will be offered in no fewer than 115 standard colours and that is just the start of the story because, like every grand Bentley the only real limit on the colour of the car is the customers imagination. Once the bare metal, pre-production Mulsanne bodyshell arrives at the paint shop via the automated overhead gantry, it passes through a series of full-immersion tanks, designed first to de-grease, then in turn to clean, condition, rinse, phosphate and passivate the steel and aluminium structure. At each tank the shell is immersed before being tipped fore and aft to ensure that every single crevice is reached. Once drained, the bodyshell is lowered into an electro-coating tank, where power is increased to 320 volts, attracting particles-in-solution to deposit on the charged, metal bodywork to form, in conjunction with the phosphate, a hard protective shell of corrosion-proof zinc primer. From this point, the judgement and skill of Bentleys craftsmen come to the fore. A two-coat primer is applied by hand, ready for colour-of-choice to be applied. Each primed body is minutely inspected, sanded or flatted using ...

Make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes (for chlorate or HHO cells) How to make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes that can be used for chlorate cells or HHO cells and a few other electrochemical processes requiring inert anodes in oxidizing solutions. Make the electrode is fairly simple. First a titanium strip is sanded to give a clean surface and then etched with hydrochloric acid to activate it. Cobalt nitrate solution is applied in a thin layer and then heated to 300 Celsius to decompose (pyrolyze) the cobalt nitrate into cobalt oxide. the loosely adhering cobalt oxide is washed off and then new layers of cobalt oxide are applied. Usually between 3 to 10 layers. Then manganese nitrate is applied and the process repeated to make manganese dioxide. Another 10 to 50 layers may be applied. Optionally, a further layer of manganese nitrate by electrolysis may be applied by using the electrode as an anode in a solution of 90 grams manganese sulfate, 500mL water and 12mL concentrated sulfuric acid. Copper or titanium is used as the cathode and a current density of about 10ma per square centimeter is used. A short run time of a few minutes or so puts a thin layer of manganese dioxide on the surface that seems to reduce permanganate production, but does not eliminate it. In the future i'll be working on a lead dioxide electrode.

CRS Aerospace in Mexico CRS Aerospace serves Mexico manufacturing firms by providing secondary processes such as anodizing, chemfilm, cleaning, passivate, non-destructive testing and key support services. It is the successor to industry icon ChemResearch Sonora and has been operating in Empalme, Sonora since 2003. The company's core competencies include NADCAP certified anodizing type I, II and II; Chemfilm, including Rohs compliance, passivate, paint and NDT, masking and chemical washing. CSR Aerospace currently employs 16 and occupies 24000 square-feet of Mexico industrial real estate. CSR Aerospace now has significant Mexico machining capabilities, and will add additional metal fabrication CNC machines to meet growing customer demand. The company has arranged for all articles to first be programmed and run in an affiliated aerospace machining plant in Phoenix prior to their transfer to Mexico. Future Mexico plans include adding aerospace paint and welding lines. Tanks for anodizing and Chemfilm are 60 x 30 x 28 inches and handle both low and high volume. Passivation process tanks are 24 x 18 x 20 inches. CRS Aerospace achieved NADCAP certification in its areas of core competency. NADCAP, short for National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, is a program originally conceived by the Department of Defense to ensure consistent aerospace manufacturing process and quality. Accreditation is virtually required today by all aerospace OEMs and major suppliers ...

Passivation.avi This is a short cartoon showing how the gliding motility assay works. Casein, the little orange globs, is first flown into the microscope slide chamber. Casein makes two layers on the slide[1]. When adding kinesin, the blue green things, it is a good idea to add it with casein since some of the casein on the top layer will come off and it has been shown that adding casein with the kinesin aids in supporting motiltiy[2]. No one knows if the kinesin will bury itself between casein micelles, or if it lays on top of the casein substrate. Microtubules are then flown into the cell and the kinesin walk[3] along them. Kinesin walks in only one direction along the microtubule and no one knows if there is any type of communication between individual motors however, there have been studies showing that strain in the kinesin neck linker is important[4]. Kinesin's processivity, or how it steps and for how long, is not entirely uniform and it can take back steps or even come off the microtubule. The Greening of Orbital Debris (Nick Johnson) The near-Earth space environment is becoming increasingly cluttered with hazardous man-made debris. The collision between an operational Iridium spacecraft and a derelict Russian spacecraft in February 2009, which in turn generated hundreds of thousands of additional hazardous debris, highlighted the need for effective orbital debris mitigation measures. For thirty years the NASA orbital debris program has led both national and international efforts to characterize the threat posed by orbital debris and to develop engineering solutions and policies to curtail its growth. Ultimately, remediation of the environment will likely be needed. As NASA chief scientist for Orbital Debris at Johnson Space Center since 1997, Nicholas L. Johnson serves as the agency authority in the field of orbital debris, including all aspects of environment definition, present and future, and the operational and design implications of the environment to both manned and robotic space vehicles operating in Earth orbit. He is responsible for conceiving and conducting research to define the orbital debris environment, for determining operational techniques for spacecraft to protect themselves from the environment, and for recommending techniques to minimize the growth in the future orbital debris environment.

Why passivate? The passivation of a hho or separator cell is important to stop the "brown water"effect that is often observed.

Cell Plate passivation of stainless steel Cell plates need to be passivated prior to use. The process used to be done with nitric acid, which is dangerous and also have an environmental problem of what to do with the acid when finished. Nitric acid can burn your skin severely, and also can damage many things around it by just the fumes that come off it. Today the favoured method of passivation is to use citric acid which is safe, governmentally friendly and cheap. Citric acid can be sent through the post as it is a "Non Dangerous Goods" category, The process is very simple, mix the citric acid power in some distilled water (3% solution) and warm to about 50C or 120F. I use an aquarium pump to pump the acid through a dry cell after it has been assembled, and any number of cells can be joined together so that all can be done at the same time. Let the pump work for about 30 minutes and then drain and blow air through the cells or better still, oxygen. Cells are now ready for putting into service. If anyone needs citric acid, we have supplies available on our website in small packets.
