The Prayer of Saint Francis is a Christian prayer. It is attributed to the 13th-century saint Francis of Assisi, although the prayer in its present form cannot be traced back further than 1912, when it was printed in France in French, in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell) as an anonymous prayer, as demonstrated by Dr Christian Renoux in 2001. The prayer has been known in the United States since 1936 and Cardinal Francis Spellman and Senator Hawkes distributed millions of copies of the prayer during and just after World War II

  • Papal Politics - World February 2005 Will the next Pope be African? Following the Pope's death, speculation is growing about who will replace him. We profile the two leading candidates. From his humble upbringing in Nigeria, Francis Arinze has risen to dizzy heights in the Vatican. "I certainly think that he could be Pope," declares journalist Gerald O'Connell. If elected, he's widely expected to combat the growing competition Islam poses by recruiting new followers in the third world. But traditionalists believe the Church should consolidate its position in the Western World, instead of electing a black Pope and switching its focus to Africa. "There is a very, very real challenge for the faith here in Europe, which traditionally has been the intellectual and spiritual motor of the Church," laments Cardinal George Pell. Their preferred candidate is Angelo Scola, who would re-engage Europe's young. However, both candidates share the same conservative values. Pope Jean Paul II has created a College of Cardinals in his own image, leaving little possibility of the next Pontiff being liberal. And that's something worrying many observers. "If you ask the general public what are the big issues facing the church, they name things like abortion," states Vatican observer John Allen. "But inside the College of Cardinals, there isn't much disagreement on those issues." Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

  • The Churchs most spectacular papal tomb restored In the history of the papacy, this bronze tomb is one of a kind, it was made in 1484 for Pope Sixtus IV. The most important Italian sculptors of the time, Antonio del Pollaiolo, took nine years to finish it. Yet it was never used for as a tomb. Sante Guido Restorer Pope Sixtus IV was a Franciscan and he wanted to be buried in a simple tomb in the earth. But it was his nephew Cardinal Giuliano ella Rovere, or Pope Julius II who had this lovely but expensive tomb made. Around the popes figure, the artist carved the seven cardinal virtues. He also carved the ten allegories of Art and Sciences, including astronomy, philosophy and dialectics at the base of the monument. Thanks to the restoration, which lasted two years, restorers discovered the artists challenges, who was not comfortable doing large-scale work. The first two he created, Rhetoric and Grammar, are very different from the last two, Philosophy and Theology. Sante Guido Restorer "The artist sculpted all the elements that humanists had placed at the centre of culture during those times, cause the Pope was very cultured and sensitive." Next to the sculptures, the artist added two panels. The one that sits at the popes feet tells the life of the pontiff. The other, under the head of Sixtus IV, has his signature. In addition, the sculptor also carved oak branches, which identified the family of the Pope. The monument, which is also known as the bronze Sistine Chapel can be seen at St. Peters Basilicas Museum. • Jordan will represent all Arabs on papal visit, says... The Pope's visit to the Holy Land is highly relevant, a visit in which the Pope will be a pilgrim of peace, as he said last Saturday in his speech to the Papal Foundation. The first stop of this visit is in Jordan. Regarding the preparations for the visit of his Holiness, H2onews spoke to the Jordanian Minister of Tourism, Ms. Maha Al-Khatib. We do not say that the Pope visits only Jordan. For us, Jordan is the station, but we hope to represent all the Arabs in this important visit and we would also like to have with us representatives of different Arab countries to come and welcome the guest with us. Jordan is a country for all. The Royal Court is presiding over the preparations and we are helping on a daily basis. The Vatican's nunciature in Jordan is also on top of these arrangements and we hope that these preparations will satisfy our guests. The security arrangements have also been taken into account in terms of time. What concerns us is that every guest that is coming to visit on this occasion enjoys the visit and sees the Pope and participates at the Mass. That is very important for us. The minister gave an overview of the Popes stay in Jordan and the places he will visit there, especially the baptismal site. The site is very important for us. The Jordan River, where Christ was baptized, is for us a sacred site. And for visitors it is a very beautiful site. During this very important visit, the Holy Father will confirm and encourage the Christians of the Holy Land ...
