Thailand's crown prince held the annual Brahminica ploughing ritual in Bangkok on Friday. At the ceremony, Thailand's sacred oxen predicted good rainfall for a bumper rice crop this coming growing season. The ancient ploughing ceremony in Buddhist Thailand marks the beginning of the rainy season. The ceremony heralded an auspicious start for the rice-planting season for the world biggest rice exporter. Officials wearing ancient costumes paraded near the Grand Palace with a pair of trained oxen from King Bhumibol's agricultural project. During the ceremony, the pair of oxen were offered several kinds of food in banana-leaf platters, including paddy, grass, corn, hay, sesame seed, water and liquor to make the prediction. This year, the sacred cows chose grass and liquor, signifying good rainfall. According to a senior minister from the Ministry of Agriculture, the omen would bring about ample water and crops, as well as smooth international trade. Maize Innovation in Rwanda - Oxen Maize is an important staple crop in Rwanda with the potential for export if production can be significantly increased. Here we report on how the Research into use Programme is working with a network of local partners to achieve that aim through a Maize Innovation Platform in Rwandas Eastern Province. Gahne Jringhica farms one hectare of land sown with maize in the Nagartare district of Rwandas Eastern province. Like 83% of Rwandas working population he lives in a rural area and survives on subsistence agriculture. This year, thanks to improved yields of Maize, he has for the first time, been able to send his children to school erect a semipermanent dwelling and purchase a cow. Mr Jringha is amongst a group of farmers in the district who have seen an increase in their livelihoods which have been made possible by access to new seed varieties, improved access to market and training in different planting methods through a cooperative set up by the Research Into Uses (RIU) Rwanda country team as part of its innovation platform work. Oxen Team Practice This is a video I made on July 12th, before my divorce. My ex-husband and I raised this team of oxen, Curly Sue and Little Bill. My ex began the training process when the calves were about 6 months old. He would walk them around, patiently teaching them the commands until they learned each one. Here we were exercising them. As a self conscience side note; that dress made me look fat! I'm never wearing it again, LOL. I don't think my Sketcher Shape-Up shoes helped - they made me walk kind of funny. Thanks for watching!
