  • Drepanosticta quadrata (Singapore Shadowdamsel) Oviposition Video available in HD. Drepanosticta quadrata (Singapore Shadowdamsel) is a damselfly that is thought to be endemic to Singapore, but in recent years, it was discovered to also exist in Johor. This damselfly inhabits dimly-lit streams that are relatively fast flowing. The female is decorated by the black and white markings on its body while the male's conspicuous difference from the female is the bright speck of blue at its tail. This damselfly was seen to be in tandem at 11:30am. The wheel position of the pair was rather strange though, with the loop formed by the damselflies' abdomens being rather flat instead of inflated. The pair then started ovipositing soon after. The female first flew to different objects such as branches and twigs above the water, then started trying to oviposit on each of them by slitting open them using its ovipositor. The larvae are supposed to hatch first before dropping into the stream. This would protect the weak and defenseless larvae from being attacked by other predators in the water, such as fishes. After settling its mind on one twig, the female then started its job, which could be seen in the video. The male that mated with it was perching on twigs nearby, guarding it to prevent other males from snatching "his mate" away from him. Sometimes, it would multitask, hovering to catch its meal while guarding. Not long after, another male arrived and wanted to disturb the female. The guarding male was enraged, and flew to fight with the male ...
