Authors@Google: David Kessler David Kessler visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "The End of Overeating." This event took place on May 28, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series. Before we can begin to address America's eating epidemic, we need to understand WHY we have such difficulty controlling what we eat. Kessler spent the past seven years meeting with top scientists, physicians, psychologists, and food industry insiders, and conducting his own research to reveal how specific foods produced by giant food corporations and restaurant chains ("Big Food") feed our desire to eat by stimulating the brain with an infinite variety of diabolical combinations of salt, fat and sugar. People of all ages are being set up for a lifetime of food obsession due to the ever-present availability of foods laden with salt, fat and sugar. It is no wonder that millions of Americans are gaining weight and getting sick. The End of Overeating provides a highly readable and indispensable picture of the problems we face and offers solutions for how to fight them and regain control. David Kessler, MD, served as commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Kessler, a pediatrician, has been dean of the medical schools at Yale and the UCSF. He is the father of two grown children and lives with his wife in California.

Binge eating/compulsive overeating ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please Read~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To say "just lose weight" is not saying just lose weight for me and others with the same problem as me. It's like saying... give up the only way that you know how to deal with negative emotions, give up the only thing that makes you feel better... and see how that goes. My videos will now be focusing on the psychological aspects of binge eating and compulsive overeating. Please follow along, give your feedback/experiences and feel free to post video responses. Possible reasons for binge eating: - Soothing negative emotions, learned early in life - To sedate yourself - Situations or upbringing that involves restriction of food or certain foods... binge eating can be a sense of freedom or a rebellion - Child abuse or other forms of ***ual abuse - subconsciously using fat to "hide" yourself and potentially prevent yourself from being ***ually attractive - A reaction to other situations that make you feel vulnerable - Boredom or simply to "feel good" - Being so used to being fat that a part of you possibly doesn't even WANT to lose weight __________________________________ I've always felt like I understand my binge eating and what causes it, so never felt the need to look that much deeper into it. But I think it's really important to first fully understand why you do something, before you can fix it. Binge eating is a symptom of a bigger problem... and that problem is having no other coping ...

Emotional Eating...the REAL reasons we overeat or binge eat Getting to the underlying reasons why we overeat. Book quote from Overcoming Overeating by Jane R. Hirschmann & Carol H. Munter "When you cut something out of your diet, you're more likely to overeat it when you do encounter it," says Janet Polivy, Ph.D., An interesting article that references her research MSNBC Article:

FitGamer -- Body Fuel & How to Avoid Overeating This is the second episode of FitGamer, in which I explain in more detail how to fuel your body properly, what diet mistakes to avoid & how to identify overeating habits. BMR calculator: I am not a nutrition specialist, doctor or personal trainer! How to curb overeating: 1.) Don't let yourself get too hungry. I personally like the "hunger scale" method. Listen to your body, and then ask yourself - on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 equals so full you have to open your jeans because you're bloated, 7 you're full, 3 you start to hear the tummy rumbling and 1 you're starving and ravenous and would eat anything - or anyone in sight - where do you currently rank on that scale? If it's anywhere from 4-6, it's time for a meal. At lower than four, you're likely to overeat at your next meal because your hunger tricks you to, and if you eat at 7 or higher, you might have emotional issues that cause you to overeat - Or maybe you're just plain bored, and instead of finding something fun or constructive to do, you reach for the food. I'm guilty of that one myself. 2.) Try new foods more often. You might run into some that you hate, but you will likely run into many more that you will like, or that might even become new favorites. 3.) Check out the calorie count of your favorite indulgence. The number might scare you off! That doesn't mean you should never eat them again, but it might be enough of a shock to prevent you from making it a daily treat. 4.) Prepare food ...

Overeaters Anonymous: It Works (Part 1 of 2) Introduction to Overeaters Anonymous (Part 1 of 2)

Tip for Overcoming Overeating Something that seems to really help those of us who struggle with binging/overeating/bulimia/etc., is to remember that food absolutely does not have any power whatsoever over us. The most helpful thing to do, when wanting to binge or feeling weak, facing a particular food, or whatever, is to look at the food and remind yourself of these deceivingly simple sentences: It is just food. It isn't that big of a deal. It's always been there, will always be there. It's not a big deal. This isn't your one-and-only, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to eat it. By imbuing food with all these thoughts about how wonderful and seductive it is, how badly you want it, how it's your only chance to eat it, etc, you are building it up to be something it is not. Perhaps food really does seem to have a hold over you, over your life. Maybe it does seem like something that you can't control. Let me tell you, IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY POWER OVER YOU, EVEN IF IT *SEEMS* TO. The power it (falsely!) seems to exert over you is all in your mind. It's false, it isn't reality. You're giving away your power to something that never has and never will be able to control you. Food doesn't have that power--food CAN'T have that power. And I hope that by reminding you of that, you can feel empowered to walk off, go about your life. I had the interesting experience of having a friend describe to me what a binge feels like internally to them. It was described to me as "there is a lot of noise, chaos, and turmoil ...
