  • Cardinal Anatomic Planes of Human Foot & Body - Biomechanic Functional Orthopedics - 01 - Podiatry Dr. Glass DPM - This is an illustration that depicts the cardinal plane movements of the lower extremity. This is a biomechanical demonstration of the functional orthopedic nature of podiatry In the anatomical lower extremity, there exist three cardinal planes: Sagittal, Frontal, & Transverse. Anatomical motion that occur parallel to these planes are considered to be the dominate motions of that plane. The Horizontal, or Transverse, plane divides the foot in a superior and inferior half. Adduction and Abduction are the motion that occur. Parallel to this plane, adduction is when the foot and leg are medially rotated towards the midline of the body, and Abduction is when the foot and leg are laterally rotated away from the midline. The Frontal, or Coronal, plane divides the foot in to Anterior and Posterior portions. Inversion and Eversion are the motions that occur parallel in this plane. Inversion is when the plantar surface of the foot rotates toward the midline of the body and Eversion is then the plantar surface of the foot rotates away from the midline of the body. The Sagittal plane, which in the foot is approximated to the osteological axis of the 2nd metatarsal, separates the foot in to medial and lateral halves. Parallel to this plane, Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion refer to the relationship between the surface of the foot and the anterior surface of the leg. Thus dorsiflexion is when the dorsum of the foot moves toward the leg whereas plantarflexion is defined ...

  • PreOp® Orthopedic: Hip Replacement Patient Education Patient ED @ 617-379-1582 INFO You doctor has recommended that you undergo hip replacement surgery. But what exactly does that mean? The hip joint is the place where the thighbone - called the femur - and the hipbone - called the pelvis - meet. As you walk, the ball-shaped end of the thigh moves within a cuplike depression on the side of the hip. As long as the thigh can move smoothly against the hip, you are able to walk comfortably. But over time, especially in patients who suffer from arthritis or rheumatism, the hip joint can wear down. Cartilage, the tissue that cushions the bones and makes it possible for them to move smoothly against each other can wear away. When this happens, the bones rub together causing pain and even restricting the ability to walk. * In some cases, hip surgery is recommended for people who have suffered a hip fracture. * No matter what the cause, one of the most effective ways to fix a damaged hip is to replace it surgically. In this procedure, the ball-shaped bone at the top of the thigh is removed and replaced with a metal substitute. The hip socket is widened and lined with a smooth pad that allows the metal ball joint to move more freely against the pelvis. Hip replacement surgery is a major operation, but your doctor believes that the procedure -- followed up with physical therapy and time to heal -- will result in reduced pain and greater mobility. So make sure that you ask your doctor to carefully explain the reasons ...

  • PreOp® Patient Education Orthopedic: Achilles Tendon Repair Patient ED @ 617-379-1582 INFO Achilles Tendon Surgery muscle injury heel doctor Your doctor has recommended that you undergo surgery to repair your ruptured Achilles tendon. But what does that actually mean? Your Achilles tendon is the connection between the heel and the most powerful muscle group in the body. It is the strongest, largest and thickest tendon in the body. It begins in the mid-leg and descends to the heel. Unfortunately, the Achilles tendon is extremely susceptible to acute and chronic injury because of the demands it withstands. When it ruptures, patients feel a "pop" and may feel that they've been struck from behind. This is often followed by weakness and pain

  • Baptist Orthopedic Surgeon Performs Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty For many years, the only option for patients in pain from failed shoulder replacements has been to grin and bear it. But a newer procedure, the reverse total shoulder, approved by the FDA in 2004, offers these patients pain relief and improved shoulder mobility. According to orthopedic surgeon E. Rhett Hobgood, MD, who has been doing the reverse shoulder procedure since 2006, this implant reverses the normal anatomy of the shoulder joint. In a standard shoulder replacement, we resurface the socket of the scapula and replace the ball at the top of the humerus. In the reverse shoulder, the ball part of the joint is placed on the scapula, and the socket is created at the top of the humerus.
  • PreOp® Patient Education Orthopedic: Bunion Removal Foot Patient ED @ 617-379-1582 INFO Your doctor has recommended that you undergo surgery to remove a bunion. But what does that actually mean? A bunion is caused when the metatarsal bone in the big toe gradually shifts towards the second toe. This shift causes a bump at the inside of the big toe's first joint. As a bunion grows, it can lead to other painful foot problems, including hammertoes, calluses on the bottom of the foot and arch pain. Bunions are largely hereditary, but they can effect anyone. Even a small instability in the bones of the big toe can trigger the growth of a bunion. A bunion does not generally lead to other health problems, but left untreated it can eventually limit the ability to walk. Luckily, bunions can be treated with a fairly simple surgical procedure. So make sure that you ask your doctor to carefully explain the reasons behind this recommendation.
