Anonymous 12th century - Organum Sancte Bernarde Medieval Music Of The Cistercians - Ensemble Officium

Pérotin / Paul Hindemith, 1951: Organum - Alleluia, Nativitas Gloriosae In this May 20, 1951 recording, Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) conducts the Collegium Musicum of Yale University School of Music in a performance of the Alleluia and Nativitas Gloriosae from Organum, composed by Pérotin in 1154. (Please see the notes in the video above for more information about this work.) The performance you hear in this recording is a dress rehearsal for a concert that was to be given almost 2 years later, on May 14, 1953. Hindemith had founded the Collegium Musicum in 1943, but did not begin to hold concerts until after the war in 1945. The first of these programs was a concert of French instrumental and choral music from the 13th and 14th centuries. Subsequent programs were staged by Hindemith in 1946, 1947, 1948, and 1951, scaling what Hindemith referred to as the "peaks of musical mountain ranges" from the 13th to the conclusion of the 16th century. According to the notes on the reverse side of the LP jacket, the 1953 concert "continued this progression in presenting the final ripening of the madrigal art and music by composers most influential in the transition from Renaissance to Baroque styles" -- notably Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi. So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the LP and LP jacket in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these.

Alleluia: Angelus domini (3) Free Organum (3/25) Techniques for spicing up plainchant eventually led to polyphony: music with two or more independent lines. Without compromising the integrity and primacy of the chant line, medieval sacred music explored the following: 1.Responsorial (alternate soloist and group) 2. Antiphonal (alternate between equal groups, monasteries were usually set up like this anyway) 3. Processional (movement so sound emanates from various places) 4. Octaves (boys in monasteries with higher voices) 5. Organum (natural divisions of octaves occur at fourths and fifths; to the "vox principalis" was added a line moving at a constant interval and called the "vox org***is"). Polyphony emerged in the 8th or 9th century and appears in an early elementary form in "parallel organum": chant with almost strictly parallel progression. Doubling the chant line in another octave does it no disservice, so why not at the fifth or fourth? It gives the music a fascinating resonance. Musica enchiriadis ("Musical Handbook") from the latter half of the 9th century provides our first examples of parallel organum. In some instance, the two voices start in unison and the vox org***is climbs to its interval, returning at the ends of phrases to the unison. Organum appeared in contrary motion too, a mirroring of lines leading to issues of counterpoint. "Oblique organum" refers to the practice of staying on a note to avoid the tritone. In "free organum" the org*** voice appears above the tenor but may cross or mirror it ...

Organum - Veil of Tears, part 2 From the Organum album "Veil of Tears" (Matchless Recordings, 1994). The two parts of "Veil of Tears" were recorded 1992 with Michael Prime, Dinah Jane Rowe and David Jackman. David Jackman aided and abetted by Michael Prime, Dinah Jane Rowe, Roger Sutherland, Jim O'Rourke and Robert Hampson. Further informations about David Jackman / Organum: - "...water dripping, clanking, whooping, alongside chimes, subdued flute and what sounds like a mechanical whale (...) all that's important to Jackman is the sheer sensuality of the sound (...) potent, affecting and utterly gorgeous." Electric Shock Treatment (UK) * David Jackman is a musician, sound and visual artist who has been recording and performing for over 30 years. He produces work under both his own name and under the moniker Organum and has over 130 separate drone works releases to his name. Jackman's earliest known musical activity was as a member of Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra between 1969 and 1972. In 1979 he began to release very short runs of cassette singles, in line with the prevailing underground cassette culture. These were almost all released under his given name or the moniker Monoplane. It was not until 1983 that he began to use the name Organum and release his work on vinyl on various labels around Europe as well as his own imprint, Aeroplane. Organum has been a platform for many collaborations with contributors including Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound, Christoph Heemann ...

Written On The Sky So often we anxiously anticipate certain releases only to find ourselves disappointed when they fail to match our expectations. Then there are less familiar ones for which our expectations are lower, yet we ultimately find ourselves floored when we discover how great they are. The Blue Notebooks is one such instance, and what a beautiful recording it is. Prior to its release, Richter studied piano with the late avant-garde Italian composer Luciano Berio and founded the classical group Piano Circus (an ensemble of six pianists that formed in 1989 to perform Steve Reichs Six Pianos) whose repertoire included works by Arvo Pärt and Philip Glass. Richters first recording, Memoryhouse, an ambitious fusion of modern classical music, electronics, and field recordings, was recorded with The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, his resume includes contributions to The Future Sound of Londons Dead Cities and Roni Sizes In the Mode. Released on Fat-Cats off-shoot label 130701, Richters second album, The Blue Notebooks, features a small core of musicians, specifically Richter on piano, violinists Louisa Fuller and Natalie Bonner, viola player John Mecalfe, and cellists Chris Worsey and Philip Sheppard. Gloria-Messe de Notre Dame, Guillaume de Machaut. Ensemble Organum Guillaume de Machaut, sometimes spelled Machault, (c. 1300 April 1377), was an important Medieval French poet and composer. He is one of the earliest composers for whom significant biographical information is available. Guillaume de Machaut was "the last great poet who was also a composer,". Well into the 15th century, Machaut's poetry was greatly admired and imitated by other poets including the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer. Machaut was and is the most celebrated composer of the 14th century. He composed in a wide range of styles and forms and his output was enormous. He was also the most famous and historically significant representative of the musical movement known as the ars nova. Machaut was especially influential in the development of the motet and the secular song (particularly the lai, and the formes fixes: rondeau, virelai and ballade). Machaut wrote the Messe de Nostre Dame, the earliest known complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass attributable to a single composer, and influenced composers for centuries to come.

Organum - Max ritcher. Song from skins series 4 episode 2 hope you all enjoy it ^^

Organum of the 4th A demonstration of a Parallel organum tuning on a Chris Allen symphonie. My two chanterelles are tunes to G and the D below it, to give a medieval organum of the 4th, with a rather unusual sound. This tuning is far too underused in the gurdy world overall, as, when well tuned, it produces some lovely sounds.
