Fiber optics is the overlap of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibers. Optical fibers are widely used in fiber-optic communications, which permits transmission over longer distances and at higher bandwidths (data rates) than other forms of communications. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with less loss and are also immune to electromagnetic interference. It's an Adventure Class 3-9x50mm scope with AO Paralax adjustment and Illuminated Red/Green Mil-Dot reticle... I mounted it on my GAMO Whisper Air Rifle and figured I'd make a little field test video to show how well it's been holding up... I start off with a couple of targets @ 30 yards, then adjust elevation and shoot another target @ 100 yards, then I adjust back to the 30 yard zero and take a few more shots... All shots were taken at center reticle using Crosman Premier Hollow Point pellets... A big thanx goes out to Josh and everyone else at Center Point Optics for running the scope giveaway contest... This has been well illustrated in the past 5-10 years which has seen, for example, the development of compression molded glass aspheric lenses for improved performance and packaging. The incorporation of injection molded plastic lenses and possibly hybrid refractive/diffractive surfaces will grow. Furthermore, as the trend continues towards smaller pixels as well as more pixels in a given sensor, the imaging optics will be further driven towards higher image quality. Zoom lenses will increase in their zoom range, yet there will be a continuing emphasis towards smaller and smaller packaging. The optics and their associated mechanics will need to be more robust with respect to stray light such as flare, glare, ghost images, and other undesirable image anomalies. And our optics must be more robust with respect to environmental effects such as thermal soaks and gradients. And with all of the above, customers will want lower cost too. The key differences which can be exploited are generally described by referring to their coherence which is much greater than that of other sources. This involves both spatial coherence and temporal coherence. Spatial coherence refers to the effect whereby the laser beam behaves as if it came from a point source, while conventional sources are "spread out" in space, consequently laser beams can be focussed into extremely small areas. Temporal coherence refers to the fact that laser beams have a very narrow spectral width-loosely speaking only one colour is present. This video describes a number of applications of lasers including laser induced fluorescence work in the Physics Department (the French agent Alain Marfart's print was detected on a chart taken from the yacht "Ouvea" which brought the Rainbow Warrior bombers to Auckland in 1985 - this was the first use of laser fingerprint detection in New Zealand).
