By Michiyo Ishida | Posted: 02 June 2011 1546 hrs SHIZUOKA PREFECTURE: Japan's Shizuoka Cancer Center has used smell to help create a positive environment for patients and staff alike. Cancer patients tend to give off a certain odour - a fact that is seldom mentioned because it's taboo. However, at the Shizuoka Cancer Center, there's a pleasant fragrance in the air. "I use air cleaners for rooms, prepare rooms with flooring, and clean them as often as possible. We also wipe the patient's body or get them to bathe, and dress them in clean clothes," said Ms Shinobu Matsumi, chief nurse at Shizuoka Cancer Center. Three years ago, a team led by Dr Masatoshi Kusuhara began studying the odour that comes from cancer patients. "I ***yze the particles that form the odour, I find out what kind of odours exist, and what I can do in my research. As a first step, I receive gauze or pads of patients and ***yze the components and recreate the odour," said Dr Masatoshi Kusuhara, chief of Regional Resources Division at Shizuoka Cancer Center Research Institute. The smells are different, depending on the type of cancer. In another lab, Dr Kusuhara creates pleasant smells to negate the bad odour.
