I discuss the ideas behind the project, previous research in the subject area, possible future developments, and applications of the research. The planets in the solar system are subject to multiple gravitational perturbations from other solar system bodies including those from general relativity, solar oblateness, other planets, large asteroids (as discrete point masses), and small asteroids (cumulatively). Currently, the largest uncertainty in our knowledge of inner solar system planetary positions is due to the asteroids. In this project, we attempt to characterize the perturbative effects on the motions of the inner planets as a noise problem. We have created a preliminary numerical integrator using Python to model solar system dynamics and have found that the problem is addressable using our framework. In the future, we intend to adapt our integrator and force model to efficiently encompass (and test) the various relevant solar system mass components. We will then address several issues, including determining the most advantageous coordinate system, the details of interactions with the intermediate-mass asteroids, how to best model the distribution of the hundreds of thousands of small-mass asteroids ...

  • The Solar System (WIP) This animation is a WIP using 3ds Max 9. I am using the Solar System to practice, gain experience, and learn more about 3ds Max. With only a week of experience, I still have much to learn. I was inspired to make animations from all of the "scaling" videos of planets and stars available on YouTube. The problem that I see is that all of the animations feature the exact same stars and planets. Once I finalize this WIP which deals only with the planets of the Solar System and the Sun, I will move on to more unique comparisons.
