14. Maxine Hong Kingston, The Woman Warrior The American Novel Since 1945 (ENGL 291) In this lecture at the midpoint of the course Professor Hungerford takes stock of the syllabus thus far and to come by laying out her guiding thesis of the Identity Plot, a rubric for understanding novels in the twentieth century as, she argues, the Marriage Plot is a rubric for understanding novels in the nine***th century. Referring to examples throughout the syllabus, but especially Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior, Hungerford describes the overriding tendency of American novels written after 1945 to explore the tension between individual and collective identities and to interrogate the artistic and political stakes of competing notions of authenticity. Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2008.

Chad'z graphic novel & trade paperback (TPB) collection 2009 I'm a pretty big comic book geek and I have a fairly large collection of graphic novels and trade paperbacks. These are bookshelf-type comics that are usually 100 pages minimum. Anything smaller is an individual comic book and those are under my bed in long boxes. I just wanted to concentrate on my big book collection for this video. I didn't even get to discuss everything, but I think this is a good overview. Sorry it's so "long" but I think it's too short, actually. LOL!

20. Philip Roth, The Human Stain (cont.) The American Novel Since 1945 (ENGL 291) In this lecture Professor Hungerford discusses how the novels we read are shaped by legal and market constraints. She traces a history of censorship from the Comstock laws, to the policing of Joyce's Ulysses and Ginsberg's Howl, and shows how changes in publishing practices have tended to penalize more unusual, less profitable books. Hungerford also touches on the canon debates of the 80s and 90s (citing John Guillory and Toni Morrison), and the issues of intellectual property and internationalization raised by digital literature. Finally, she points to some ways that Philip Roth, despite his controversial representations of Judaism and of women, succeeds in tackling fundamental human concerns. Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2008.

Sookie & Quinn: The Southern Vampire Novels PLEASE READ FIRST & mind the SPOILERS. The first couple of seconds are suppose to be when Sookie goes to the contest for the new packmaster of Shreveport in Dead as a doornail (book 5). When Sookie is reading the two wolves' minds she gets hurt while in the cage with them. Her leg gets cut on the metal door. Quinn saves her from getting hurt any worse than that. "Moving faster than I thought such a large man could move, Quinn spun on his foot, grabbed my arm with one hand, and yanked with all his might. With his other hand he slammed shut the door, and I heard something crash against it." DEAD AS A DOORNAIL pg, 274. Quinn then licks the wound which heals it. Nice meeting huh? lol Better than 'What's your sign' that's for sure .................................................................................... Later on towards the end of the vid Sookie and Quinn are on the phone, then a bulding explodes. That is supposed to be the Pyramid of Gizeh blowing up by the crazies at the Fellowship. Sookie figures out about the explotion minutes before it happens and calls him. (she goes and gets Eric in person ^.^) The rest of the vid has no rythme or reason. No story. There are only season one clips of Sookie because I made this vid way before season 2 started. I would like to let everyone know I ship Eric & Sookie, but I also love Quinn, and Quinn loves Sookie, and thus this vid was made. I would have made a Eric & Sookie vid, but there are so many great ones out there I ...

Gothic Novels (1 of 3) Gothic fiction (sometimes referred to as Gothic horror) is a genre of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance. As a genre, it is generally believed to have been invented by the English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto. The effect of Gothic fiction depends on a pleasing sort of terror, an extension of Romantic literacy pleasures that were relatively new at the time of Walpole's novel. Melodrama and parody (including self-parody) were other long-standing features of the Gothic initiated by Walpole. Gothic literature is intimately associated with the Gothic Revival architecture of the same era. In a way similar to the gothic revivalists' rejection of the clarity and rationalism of the neoclassical style of the Enlightened Establishment, the literary Gothic embodies an appreciation of the joys of extreme emotion, the thrills of fearfulness and awe inherent in the sublime, and a quest for atmosphere. The ruins of gothic buildings gave rise to multiple linked emotions by representing the inevitable decay and collapse of human creations—thus the urge to add fake ruins as eyecatchers in English landscape parks. English Gothic writers often associated medieval buildings with what they saw as a dark and terrifying period, characterized by harsh laws enforced by torture, and with mysterious, fantastic, and superstitious rituals. In literature such Anti-Catholicism had a European dimension featuring Roman Catholic excesses such as ...
