  • I Hope This Concerns You. Cause It Should. Colony collapse disorder (CCD) or sometimes honey bee depopulation syndrome (HBDS)[1] is a phenomenon in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear. While such disappearances have occurred throughout the history of apiculture, the term colony collapse disorder was first applied to a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honey bee colonies in North America in late 2006.[2] Colony collapse is economically significant because many agricultural crops worldwide are pollinated by bees. European beekeepers observed similar phenomena in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain,[3] and initial reports have also come in from Switzerland and Germany, albeit to a lesser degree[4] while the Northern Ireland Assembly receives reports of a decline greater than 50%.[5] Possible cases of CCD have also been reported in Taiwan since April 2007.[6] The cause or causes of the syndrome are not yet fully understood, although many authorities attribute the problem to biotic factors such as Varroa mites and insect diseases (ie, pathogens[7] including Nosema apis and Israel acute paralysis virus).[8][9] Other proposed causes include environmental change-related stresses,[10] malnutrition and pesticides (eg neonicotinoids such as imidacloprid), and migratory beekeeping. More speculative possibilities have included both cell phone radiation and genetically modified (GM) crops with pest control ...

  • Bee keeping (Apiculture) - New Zealand bee's in Canada. The mites continue to plague bee keepers and Terry lost 60% of his bee's last July, the replacements arrived from New Zealand . This is Terry farm Terry's Honey Farm in Grand Forks, British Columbia. Honey Bees and Beekeeping Honey bees are one of the most well-known, popular and economically beneficial insects. For thousands of years, man has plundered honey bee colonies to get honey, bee larvae and beeswax. Now, honey bees are commonly kept in artificial hives.. Honey bees, like ants, termites and some wasps, are social insects. Unlike ants and wasps, bees are vegetarians; their protein comes from pollen and their carbohydrate comes from honey which they make from nectar. Social insects live together in groups, cooperate in foraging tasks and the care of young, and have different types, or "castes," of individuals. Tracheal Mites - These microscopic mites enter the tracheae (breathing tubes) of young bees. Inside the tracheae, mites block air exchange and pierce the walls of the tubes to suck blood. Symptoms resemble those of nosema. Bees become weak, crawl at the hive entrance and sometimes uncouple their wings so that all four wings are visible. Colony death rates are highest during winter and early spring. Varroa Mites - These mites are about the size of a pin head and are copper in color. Female mites cling to adult bees and suck their blood. Females then enter a bee brood cell and produce several offspring which, in turn, suck the blood of the developing bee ...

Today we are continuing feeding our bees. Mid March I started with a mixture of 2:1 sugar syrup. Also I have to medicate them for nosema which is like dysentry for bees. Bees won't poop in their hive so they have been cooped up all winter and this gut disease can make for a very messy situation and weaken the hive if not caught. • VID 00033 20100415 0954 Videomentary ( Video documentary ) - Trucking beehives: Beekeepers of northern Alberta in Canada transport honeybee colonies across Canada's vast crop lands. Honeybees play an important role in the pollination of Canada's fruits, vegetables and crops, like cucumbers, melons, blueberries and cranberries and canola, according to the Canadian Honey Council. In a 1998 study by Agriculture, and Agri-Food Canada, the estimated value of the bees to pollination was at $732 million, the council now says this has climbed to more than $1 billion a year. In the United States, the value of the honeybee is much larger, estimated to be approximately $15 billion a year. There are about 10000 beekeepers in Canada, operating a total of 600000 honeybee colonies, according to the CHC. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba produce about 80 per cent of Canada's 154 million kilograms of honey annually. In the winter of 2007, Ontario one of Canada's beekeeping province, saw 150-250 apiarists lose about 23000 of their 76000 hives, with an estimated value of $5 million dollars. This condition of honeybee die-off raised international fears and questions about the state of pollinators and the future of global food production, since one third of our food depends on pollinators. • Empty Hives Here's a film of some of the activity around some of my empty hives, and a shot of one of my populated hives. I'm having a little problem with my camera, please excuse the hiccups. Many beekeepers around here lost a few hives over the winter. I lost 8 out of 13. It's not CCD, and we did some microscope work looking for Nosema Cerenae. It's not that either. Who knows what it was? I take a largely hands-off approach to beekeeping. I don't medicate, and I haven't fed the bees sugar water in the past two years. I'm watching them to see what works best, and my sense is they do much better the less we worry over them.
