Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone Corn starch is a shear thickening non-Newtonian fluid meaning that it becomes more viscous when it is disturbed. When it's hit repeatedly by something like a speaker cone it forms weird tendrils. The video was shot at 30 fps and the speaker cone was vibrating at 30 Hz which is why there is no blur. This is the original video with the actual sound of the speaker.

Non-Newtonian Fluid 2 A Non-Newtonian fluid, so named because it's properties cannot be described in terms of the concepts of classical fluids, can be created easily in the home. This example is a mixture of corn starch and water, roughly 10 parts cornstarch to 1 water. When stress is applied to the liquid it exhibits properties of a solid. Especially interesting is the reaction when it is disturbed at certain frequencies. Using a frequency generator and a subwoofer, the tub of fluid was placed on top of the subwoofer's hole, which is emitting sound at 50 hz.

New Fluid Effect -- RealFlow Simulation with Fusion's Jellybeaner! For this commercial spot, we needed to create a silky smooth flow of cough syrup that moves thru the air along a specific path, and then breaks apart into an interesting field of droplets, which migrate across screen and then merge into a particle-driven pointillism effect that forms the images of people. Our client was Rhino FX in NYC who did everything else in this spot. The creative on this project was driven by strong graphic images that the client felt strongly about, so it was important to have a highly controllable rig for the fluid simulations. Some of you may have heard of our smorganic technology that keeps cg fluids from breaking up -- well in this project, we used anti-smorganic! Same tool, but this time it was set to drive the fluid apart and to do that in a controllable way. Once the fluid was broken up, we needed to form droplets of specific sizes, keep them as a swarm of individual droplets (ie., don't let droplets re-combine), and migrate them across screen in an attractive way. This was all achieved with a custom force field that eventually got dubbed: the jellybeaner! The force field selected individual core particles within droplets, and then found all the nearby particles and attracted them to the core particle. So each droplet is held together individually by the jellybeaner force. I adjusted the brightness and contrast in a few of the shots, and increased the color saturation in 1 shot, and inverted the shot of a statue reflected in a fountain so it would match the actual statue. The slow motion shots of fountains were shot at 60fps progessive 1280x720 (this camera cannot do 1920x1080 at 60p, only at 30p or 60 interlaced, and the 60 interlaced is made from 30p). I rendered the slo-mo shots at 40% speed, or two and a half times slow motion. The final shot with high speed clouds was rendered at 10x normal speed. I rendered the upload at 1920x1080, 30fps progressive, at 16Mbps. The quality seems to have held up fairly well. The music is "Johnny Liked Jazz-Variation A," included royalty-free with Sony Vegas. The camera is sold as the DMC-TZ25 in Europe. In my first test (at the Wynn) I used an original Gorilla Pod to hold the camera. At the Mirage I found that the railing vibrated almost constantly, putting jitter into all the video. This is the biggest problem with the Gorilla Pod for video. These new technologies do not just "surf" the Interwebs, they swim with the hunger of great White Whales consuming any data in their path. These new technologies can drive the "Captain Ahab" in you to grow angry and lose focus, but you must grab your harpoon and sail into the heart of the storm. Canon 550D / Manfrotto 391RC2 test shot with a 550D and a Manfrotto 391RC2 head, wanted to test this new head, so i shot some random stuff in my house, i also shot it all with 3200 and 6400 ISO, i used only natural lighting to test the quality of the image with the ISO pumped up so high, then ill do some tests using my softbox's. NOTE: the pan shots look really laggy, youtube ruins another video once again. the head is very smooth for a non fluid head. im am also doing some reviews on my equipment starting off with this head and tripod. also i am starting up a website and am in the process of sorting everything out.
