Patient Success Story: Nancy Miller Nancy Miller's decision to become an altruistic living kidney donor changed the lives of two families one in Maryland, and the other in Minnesota. This ultimately led to a two-way kidney swap which took place on January 7, 2010, between UMMC and the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minnesota. Miller, of Glen Burnie, Md., started this process by deciding to be a non-directed living donor (give a kidney to a person in great need). She offered to donate a kidney to Cindy Wickesser, of Sykesville Md., after learning that she was in kidney failure from her husband Craig, who Miller knew from her work with an electric company. Graphs with Chris Dixon Google Tech Talk February 16, 2011 Presented by Chris Dixon ABSTRACT It has become customary to use "graph" to refer to the underlying data structures at social networks like Facebook. (Computer scientists call the study of graphs "network theory," but on the web the word "network" is used to refer to the websites themselves). A graph consists of a set of nodes connected by edges. The original internet graph is the web itself, where webpages are nodes and links are edges. In social graphs, the nodes are people and the edges friendship. Edges are what mathematicians call relations. Graphs can be implicitly or explicitly created by users. Facebook and Twitter's graphs were explicitly created by users. At Hunch we've created what we call the taste graph. We created this implicitly from questions answered by users and other data sources. Our thesis is that for many activities -- for example deciding what movie to see or blouse to buy -- it's more useful to have the neighbors on your graph be people with similar tastes versus people who are your friends. I'll talk about the rising importance of these types of graphs, and dig deeper into some examples. The Sound of Archaeology Made for TAG 2010 (32nd conference of the Theoretical Archaeology Group). For this experimental piece I have taken my own super 8 footage of a familiar archaeological site (Avebury) and decontextualised it using minimal post-production techniques - namely slo-mo, cropping and freeze-frames. The resulting abstract images have then been juxtaposed with newly recorded, non-directed and non-scripted, voice-over. The sound effects originate from a variety of sources. This is a project that I wish to develop further. This is the Sound of Archaeology.

Audio Spotlight, consists of two major components: a thin, circular transducer(speaker)array, and a signal processor/amplifier. The lightweight, nonmagnetic transducer is about .5 inches (1.0 centimeters) thick, and it typically has an active area 1 foot (30.48 cm) in diameter. It can project a three-degree wide beam of sound that is audible even at distances over 100 meters (328 feet). The signal processor/amplifier are integrated into a system about the size of a traditional audio amplifier, and they use about the same amount of power.

Non-Directed Kidney Donor Meets Recipient and His Family Since birth, Ethan Hatton has battled multiple congenital conditions that eventually caused his kidneys to fail, making a kidney transplant necessary. Because none of his family members were a match, Ethan and his mother Toni Holly had to wait for an anonymous donor to come forward. When Drew Sollenberger expressed his desire to become a non-directed kidney donor, doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center found his kidney to be a perfect match for Ethan and immediately arranged the transplant for January 19, 2011. Recent Developments in Deep Learning Google Tech Talk March 19, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Geoff Hinton, University of Toronto. Deep networks can be learned efficiently from unlabeled data. The layers of representation are learned one at a time using a simple learning module that has only one layer of latent variables. The values of the latent variables of one module form the data for training the next module. Although deep networks have been quite successful for tasks such as object recognition, information retrieval, and modeling motion capture data, the simple learning modules do not have multiplicative interactions which are very useful for some types of data. The talk will show how to introduce multiplicative interactions into the basic learning module in a way that preserves the simple rules for learning and perceptual inference. The new module has a structure that is very similar to the simple cell/complex cell hierarchy that is found in visual cortex.
