Make Europium and Dysprosium Nitrate salts. In this video we make europium and dysprosium nitrate salts we'll need in upcoming videos. Instead of buying the salts directly from our chemical supply companies we decided to make them entirely using chemicals anyone can buy online or make themselves. In this case europium metal and dysprosium metal with nitric acid. The europium and dysprosium metal were purchased online from: The nitric acid was produced in our nitric acid video: The procedures for both salts is rather simple. First, obtain 2.5 grams of europium. Europium comes in mineral oil so it must be washed off with toluene. Then the europium is placed in a beaker where a total of 10 mL of water is added in small portions. This is added before the acid for safety reasons. After all the water is added and the reaction seems to have slowed down 10mL of concentrated 15.6 molar nitric acid is added. The solution is then heated to ensure complete reaction of all the metal bits. For dysprosium: 5g of dysprosium can be directly added to a mixture of 20mL of water and 20mL Nitric acid. Once again, heating the solution ensures complete reaction. Both nitrates are allowed to dry in the desiccator bag we made last week: Afterward, the nitrates are transferred to vials for storage and labeled. The europium salt produced will be Europium Nitrate pentahydrate The dysprosium salt produced will be dysprosium nitrate pentahydrate. We're going to use these nitrates for some cool ...
How to Make Aluminum Nitrate Nonahydrate How to make aluminum nitrate nonhydrate, one of the chemicals needed to make glow in the dark powder. In an upcoming video we'll need aluminum nitrate nonahydrate. The chemical formula is Al(NO3)3.9H2O Warning: These reactions must be performed outside or in a fumehood. At first it might seem that simply mixing aluminum with nitric acid can be done. But interestingly enough, aluminum is immune to the effects of nitric acid. So in order to make aluminum nitrate a two step method is needed. First the aluminum is dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid. This produces a solution of aluminum trichloride. The aluminum trichloride is then reacted with an excess of nitric acid. This oxidizes the nitric acid to nitrosyl chloride gas that bubbles out of solution, leaving behind aluminum nitrate. The solution is then evaporated to obtain aluminum nitrate nonahydrate. In the winter I was able to dry it in air and get crystals. But in the summer the ambient humidity was too high so I had to use a desiccator bag. We'll be using aluminum nitrate nonahydrate to make glow in the dark powder in upcoming videos. More information about this reaction can be found at:
Aquarium water test kits compaired ammonia nitrate nitrite This is just MY comparison of the two aquarium water test kits I have. They are both sold/manufactured by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, INC. I have called the blue bottled test strip type API and the glass tube box type Aquarium Pharmaceuticals for ease of understanding which one I am referring to. Hope this is of some help to many people testing aquarium water quality with any of the two test kits I have used. This was my test and my point of view. If you have any suggestions or if you have a different view of how any of the test results work for you, I would be pleased if you ask questions or leave comments. Thanks for viewing.

Elementary Productions: Potassium Iodide and Lead Nitrate A petri dish is filled with a small amount of water. Potassium Iodide is added to the petri dish in one end, and Lead Nitrate in the other end. As the two salts diffuse, Lead Iodide is precipitated as a "barrier" surrounding the place where the Lead Nitrate was placed. This is because of a substance with a high molecular weight diffuses more slowly than a substance with a lower molecular weight. This rule applies for any medium used, in this case water. Another good example of diffusion is why flatulence is able to smell up a room in seconds. Hydrogen sulfide (the substance responsible for the smell) has a pretty low molecular weight, and therefore diffuses faster. This experiment serves as a good demonstration on diffusion, because of the difference in molecular weights, the insolubility of Lead Iodide in water, and the color of the precipitate.
Test Stump Remover for Chlorate, Nitrate or Metabisulfite How to test tree stump remover for potassium chlorate, potassium nitrate, or sodium metabisulfite. All of these chemicals are useful and stump removers can be an easy to obtain source for them. The stump remover SHOULD be labeled. But if it isn't you can perform these tests. First mix an equal portion of sugar and stump remover and add sulfuric acid. This might cause the mixture to catch fire (add more acid if it doesn't go at first). If it does, it's most likely potassium or sodium chlorate (usually potassium). If it doesn't light with sulfuric acid, then try torching it. If it starts to burn on it's own, then it's potassium nitrate. To be absolutely certain, you can run the nitrate test we already showed in a previous video: If it's sodium metabisulfite, it won't burn with sugar under any circumstances. To confirm it's metabisulfite, in a separate container of 10mL of water add 1gram of the stump remover and 0.5 grams of iodine from one of our previous videos: If it is sodium metabisulfite it will fizz and dissolve as seen in the video. Once you've identified the stump remover you can start doing experiments! Make Cobalt and Manganese Nitrates We show how to make Cobalt nitrate and Manganese nitrate needed to make manganese dioxide electrodes. WARNING: These are heavy metals and toxic if mishandled. In addition cobalt is carcinogenic. You MUST wear gloves and preferably additional safety equipment like dust masks and lab coat. A fumehood is recommended too. Making cobalt nitrate is very easy, just get cobalt carbonate from a pottery supply store and mix it with twice its mass in water. Then add nitric acid until it stops fizzing. That's all! The red solution can be dried to make cobalt nitrate crystals for storage. Making manganese nitrate is a little more complicated. Manganese dioxide is mixed with oxalic acid, water and nitric acid to produce manganese nitrate. Alternatively you can bubble nitrogen dioxide directly into the manganese dioxide. If the solution is yellow it's because there is some iron contamination. But this is not a problem for making manganese dioxide electrodes.
How to Make Ammonium Nitrate In this video we make ammonium nitrate from various off-the-shelf chemicals. Note: This is not cheaper than buying it directly, once again our objective is to explore the chemistry. Warning: The chemicals are corrosive and ammonia has a horrible smell, work outside or in a fumehood and wear gloves. First get 138 grams of sodium bisulfate and add just enough water to dissolve it, usually 300mL. Then get one mole equivalent of a pure nitrate salt. Some common salts include: Sodium nitrate: 85 grams. Potassium nitrate: 101 grams. Calcium nitrate: 118 grams (if using tetrahydrate) Dissolve the nitrate in a minimum of water, then mix the two solutions together. Neutralize the mixture with ammonia (using a pH meter to determine the endpoint). Filter the mixture to get rid of any insoluble materials if needed, then boil until sodium sulfate begins to precipitate. Then cool the mixture to 0 Celsius and filter. Dry the filtrate to obtain ammonium nitrate mixed with some leftover metal sulfates. For higher purity the solids can be mixed with 500mL of methanol which selectively dissolves ammonium nitrate. Filter again and evaporate the filtrate to obtain pure ammonium nitrate.

Water Activated Flash Powder from Silver Nitrate and Magnesium We make flash powder from silver nitrate and magnesium WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF! We are experienced chemists and only other experienced chemists should try this. We are not responsible for any injury as a result of this experiment. We use the same silver nitrate in a previous video: In the first flash, we combine half a micromole of silver nitrate along with three mole equivalents of magnesium and then place on top of a fire resistant support. If you don't know what a micromole is you are NOT a chemist and shouldn't be trying this. A drop of water activates the powder. This causes a strongly exothermic redox reaction that is hot enough to ignite the mixture. The second flash uses double the amount and the third flash uses quadruple the amount. Because of the extreme danger of this experiment, we will not answer any questions about how to do it. If you're a chemist, you don't need our help, if you're not, you shouldn't be trying this. Potassium chlorate, starch and strontium nitrate A reaction of potassium chlorate with starch. It was initiated by a drop of concentrated sulfuric acid onto the mixture. Chlorine dioxide, first formed from the acid and the chlorate, caused the ignition of starch at the point it was added, which then ignited the rest of the mixture. Strontium nitrate was added to produce red flame color.
How to Make Potassium Nitrate at Home How to make potassium nitrate at home with instant cold packs and "sodium-free" salt. "Sodium-free" salt is actually potassium chloride. Instant cold packs contain ammonium nitrate and if the two are mixed potassium nitrate and ammonium chloride are formed in equilibrium. Fortunately potassium nitrate has lower solubility than ammonium chloride at colder temperatures giving us a means of separation. Just mix 40 grams of ammonium nitrate with 100mL of water and stir until dissolved. Filter the mixture directly into 37 grams of potassium chloride. Gently heat until completely dissolved, do not boil. Cool the mixture to 0 Celsius in the freezer or on an ice bath. Filter the crystals and dry them. Now you have potassium nitrate. To test it mix 2 parts potassium nitrate with one part sugar and light it up. It should burn with a purple/pinkish flame.
Making MERCURY NITRATE mercury dissolves in nitric acid to produce mercuric nitrate. mercury compounds are poisonis. mercury salts are heavy and dissolve poorly in water.
Make Glass Mirrors with Silver Nitrate How to make a mirror silvering solution from silver nitrate, ammonia, sugar and sodium hydroxide. Glass surfaces can be given coatings of silver that make them into mirrors. WARNING: Perform the whole experiment in less than two hours. This is because the solution generates extremely dangerous/explosive silver nitride on standing. Also, the solution will give off ammonia when heated so you'll need to do this outside, in a fume hood or in a well-ventilated area. And wash away all chemicals with lots of water. To do this, you first need the silver nitrate we made in a previous video: Get one gram of silver nitrate and one gram of sodium hydroxide. Then add enough water to both to completely dissolve them. Mix them together and you'll get a black precipitate of silver oxide. Then add enough ammonia to completely dissolve the silver oxide. Add four grams of sugar and mix well. The solution will deposit silver coatings when its heated. If you heat it in a glass container it will deposit silver on the inside of the container. To deposit it onto a glass pane you can put the glass into a tray with solution and heat the tray from below. But do not let the solution boil. Boiling tears the silver off the surface. Thin layers of silver can be wiped off with a cloth if the silver goes where you don't want it. Thicker layers can be removed by applying hydrochloric acid. This process produces a back reflective mirror, which is what most household mirrors are. For more ...

Miconazole Nitrate: To Each Their Own Wow, I did this video before seeing a video that has offended several MN users...I have to laugh because I would never EVER put something in my hair withoug first educating myself on it.... I don't use Monistat, it IS expensive LOL! What I do use is a property used in Monistat, that property is Miconazole Nitrate... it's also used in derma-skin care, fungus medicines... and in the development of film. It's only coochie cream when you apply it to your coochie... LOL! Anyway much love and respect, we're all gonna have our own opinions and to each their own right?
Synthesis of Potassium Nitrate Here I create potassium nitrate by a simple double replacement reaction involving ammonium nitrate and potassium chloride: NH4NO3 + KCl == KNO3 + NH4Cl These are then separated by cooling the solution in an ice bath, causing the KNO3 to crystallize into beautiful long spikes! Theoretical amount of KNO3 produced in this reaction was 63.1g, but I only recovered 31.4g. This shows that this is a rather inefficient process, and only gave me a 50% yield.

Sodium nitrate from fertilizer and drain cleaner This video shows the reaction of sodium hydroxide (drain cleaner) with ammonium nitrate (fertilizer). You might think that ammonium nitrate is wayyyy better than sodium nitrate. In fact this is not true: Ammonium nitrate is less suitable for redox reactions (eg black powder) and a detonation can only be achieved if you have some initial explosive, which I don´t. Stay tuned for my next video: POTASSIUM nitrate from ammonium nitrate and potash!

Make Strontium Nitrate We make strontium nitrate from strontium carbonate and nitric acid. Strontium Nitrate is used as an oxidizer in some types of pyrotechnic compositions to give a brilliant red color. A well-known example is flares. Actually making it is very simple. Just mix 45 grams of strontium carbonate, 100mL of water and 40mL of concentrated (15.6M) nitric acid and then boil down until it's dry. our website at:
How to Test if Fertilizer Has Nitrates in it In this video we show you how to test if a fertilizer has nitrates rather than urea or ammonia as its nitrogen source. The idea is quit simple, in a strongly acidic solution the nitrates will behave like nitric acid and dissolve copper metal releasing nitrogen dioxide gas. Looking for this gas is a strong indication for the presence of nitrates. WARNING: these reactions produce toxic nitrogen dioxide gas, this must be performed outside or in a fume hood. To perform the test, simply mix some of your fertilizer with water to dissolve the nitrates and then mix it with hydrochloric acid. Then add in some copper metal. The reaction is very slow to start up unless you heat it. A nerdy way of heating it on the spot without using a heater is to add a small ball of aluminum metal, don't use too much or it will go out of control. Stir the mixture as the aluminum dissolves to distribute the heat evenly. After the mixture is heated, place a glass container over the mixture to keep the gases in. If nitrogen dioxide is forming the distinctive brown nitrogen dioxide will fill the container. And that's how you can tell if there are nitrates in your fertilizer. If you want to test for ammonia (in case you have ammonium nitrate) just mix some fertilizer with half as much sodium hydroxide and add a little water to cover it. If it starts bubbling and releasing ammonia gas then it contains ammonia. Our website For more information on the chemistry visit the web page at sites ...
Make Sodium Nitrate, A Potassium Nitrate Substitute How to make sodium nitrate, which can substitute for potassium nitrate in almost all pyrotechnic purposes except flame color. Note: Sodium Nitrate is somewhat hygroscopic. Stuff you make from it such as pyrotechnic compositions should be used soon after making and not stored for extended periods of time. WARNING: Both procedures produce large quantities of ammonia gas. You have to do this experiment outside or in a fumehood. First get ammonium nitrate from an instant cold pack as seen in our previous video: For the baking soda method. Get 80 grams of ammonium nitrate and dissolve it in 150mL of water. Filter it off directly into 84 grams of sodium bicarbonate, which is baking soda. Don't expect it to dissolve, it won't. Boil the mixture down to 100mL or less. This is needed to decompose the ammonium bicarbonate that's formed. You cannot simply evaporate the mixture. The boiling will release large amounts of ammonia so you have to do this outside or in a fumehood. Once it's boiled, leave it to evaporate until dry. Sodium nitrate will decompose if heated too strongly so you cannot boil it down all the way dry unless you can ensure the temperature never goes above 200 Celsius. Leaving a little water is the safest way to ensure the best product. For the sodium hydroxide method: Place 80 grams of ammonium nitrate in a tall container and pour 40 grams of sodium hydroxide on top. Then carefully pour 30mL of water and stand back. It will quickly react to generate ...

How To Make Potassium Nitrate Make Potassium Nitrate from Instant Cold Packs and Potassium Hydroxide Warning: This reaction will produce large quantities of toxic ammonia gas. Perform the reaction outside or in a fume hood. Potassium hydroxide is highly corrosive; wear gloves when working with it. Also note that this video is for those interested in the chemistry, it's not cheaper/better/easier than buying it. Some instant cold packs contain ammonium nitrate as their active ingredient and when mixed with potassium hydroxide will produce potassium nitrate and ammonia gas. Get an instant cold pack that clearly says it contains ammonium nitrate, cut it open, and pour the contents into a container. If its unused there will be a water pouch that you can discard. The rest of the pack is ammonium nitrate. Usually its coated in an anti-caking agent so it'll be off-color. If you're using an already used instant cold pack then filter out the liquid and let it evaporate until it's dry. The crystals will be ammonium nitrate. Take 80 grams of ammonium nitrate and dissolve in 70 milliliters of hot water. This will take some time so be patient. It will take even longer in cold water so use hot water when you can. If it has an insoluble anti-caking agent then you need to filter it off through a coffee filter. Separately, measure out 56 grams of potassium hydroxide. Potassium hydroxide is sold online to make homemade soaps and for biodiesel. Add just enough water to completely dissolve the potassium hydroxide. When ...

Make Silver Nitrate From Silver and Nitric Acid How to make Silver Nitrate from Silver and Nitric acid. WARNING: This reaction produces toxic nitrogen dioxide gas. Do not perform this reaction indoors, only do it in a fumehood or outside. Simply place some pure silver in concentrated nitric acid and heat it up. The reaction proceeds too slowly in cold nitric acid to be useful. Wrap your silver in aluminum wire to better control the reaction. If it proceeds out of control and fizzes too much or generates too much gas too fast then you can pull the silver out of the acid to stop the reaction. Only aluminum is resistant to nitric acid, other metals are destroyed and will contaminate your acid. We're going to use the silver nitrate to perform silver chloride photography, making mirrors, and even making flash powder. So please subscribe, rate and comment! Where to buy Potassium Nitrate (Spectracide Stump Remover) *edit* Spectracide Stump Remover now comes in a black bottle with a black lid, however, the shape remains the same. READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE WATCHING: This is a video response to the "How To Make Explosive White Powder" video. In this video, your questions will be answered about where to get various chemicals. Seriously guys, no more questions about "where do i buy potassium nitrate" or "where do i but stump remover". Watch this to find out where to buy it, and shut up. Read the comments before you post, or even try using the nice search engine called "Google". One more thing: Saltpeter (saltpetre) IS Potassium Nitrate. It can also be sodium nitrate, but that's not much of a difference. Sodium Nitrate and Potassium Nitrate are virtually the same.
