Emergency Alert : Nebraska Nuclear Plant: Emergency Level 4 Getting Worst June 14 2011 Up-date Electrical Fire Knocks Out Spent Fuel Cooling at Nebraska Nuke Plant by John Sullivan Special to ProPublica June 9, 2011, 11:20 am A fire in an electrical switch room on Tuesday briefly knocked out cooling for a pool holding spent nuclear fuel at the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant outside Omaha, Neb., plant officials said. The safety of deep pools used to store used radioactive fuel at nuclear plants has been an issue since the accident at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant in March. If the cooling water a pool is lost, the used nuclear fuel could catch fire and release radiation. As ProPublica reported earlier, fire safety is a continuing concern at the country's 104 commercial reactors, as is the volume of spent fuel piling up at plants. Officials at Fort Calhoun said the situation at their plant came nowhere near to Fukushima's. They said it would have taken 88 hours for the heat produced by the fuel to boil away the cooling water. Workers restored cooling in about 90 minutes, and plant officials said the temperature in the pool only increased by two degrees. The fire, reported at 9:30 am, led to the loss of electrical power for the system that circulates cooling water through the spent fuel pool, according to a report from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. A chemical fire suppression system discharged, and the plant's fire brigade cleared smoke from the room and reported that the fire was out at 10:20 am, the NRC said. (AP) — Two more Missouri River flood records have been broken in southeast Nebraska, and more records are likely to fall because the amount of water being released upstream is increasing. The National Weather Service says records from 1993 were surpassed Tuesday at Plattsmouth and Nebraska City. Last weekend, Brownville also set a record. The Army Corps of Engineers is increasing the amount of water released from Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota this week, so the river will rise even more in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. The corps estimates the river will rise as much as a foot over its already high levels at Sioux City, Iowa. The river will rise roughly 3 to 5 inches from Omaha to Rulo, and it will surge about 8 inches higher at Kansas City. Nebraska's Hannah Werth and Volleyball Growing up, Hannah Werth used to have a simple goal. "Volleyball, I just really like to jump and hit the ball when I started, to be really honest," Werth said. Now, the Husker sophomore knows the game isn't so simple. "As I got older I realized that volleyball is a very skilled sport and to develop every one of those skills is very important. Not just being able to hit a ball hard, but I'm still learning, shots and defense and service feeds, settings, serving, I'm still improving all those skills," Werth said. She's still improving, but her freshman campaign in Lincoln was good enough for 2009 Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors and six Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors while playing outside hitter. "Very rarely will a freshman ever start at Nebraska, because if we're doing our job and training our players that unless there's a unique situation for a freshman to come in, but Hannah was ready to come in and play as a freshman...She's a well-rounded player, she does all the skills well. Woollen Quadruplets' 1st Birthday - The Nebraska Medical Center Quadruplets born at The Nebraska Medical Center who are believed to be the worlds youngest set of surviving quadruplets, born at 23 weeks gestation, are celebrating a major milestone. This month, the Woollen quadruplets sons Brett, Kaden and Cooper and daughter Parker are celebrating their first birthday. "It has been the craziest, but also the best year of our lives," said Lee and Rachel Woollen of Holdrege, Neb., the proud parents of the healthy quadruplets who have beaten all odds. "They were our miracle babies and now they've made it through their first year of life with few complications." The quadruplets were born Feb. 11, 2008, about four months prematurely. Each baby spent four months or more in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at The Nebraska Medical Center before being released from the hospital. I read stories all the time of babies born prematurely and theyre very sick, said Rachel Woollen. Its amazing that all weve had to deal with since weve taken the babies home from the hospital is a few viral infections and respiratory colds. We feel very blessed. By far, the most impressive train at Illinois Railway Museum is the Nebraska Zephyr, which ran on the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. Pulled by a rare EMC E-5 (only one left in existence), the "Train of the Gods" is a complete train set consisting of lightweight cars. There is nothing like this anywhere else in the US On select weekends throughout the years, IRM brings the train out and gives rides. Although we didn't ride the train, we did a bit of chasing. It really is amazing to see, and I highly recommend planning to see it if you are in the area! Also included in this video is a pair of Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin interurban cars.
