Emergency Alert : Nebraska Nuclear Plant: Emergency Level 4 Getting Worst June 14 2011 Up-date Electrical Fire Knocks Out Spent Fuel Cooling at Nebraska Nuke Plant by John Sullivan Special to ProPublica June 9, 2011, 11:20 am A fire in an electrical switch room on Tuesday briefly knocked out cooling for a pool holding spent nuclear fuel at the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant outside Omaha, Neb., plant officials said. The safety of deep pools used to store used radioactive fuel at nuclear plants has been an issue since the accident at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant in March. If the cooling water a pool is lost, the used nuclear fuel could catch fire and release radiation. As ProPublica reported earlier, fire safety is a continuing concern at the country's 104 commercial reactors, as is the volume of spent fuel piling up at plants. Officials at Fort Calhoun said the situation at their plant came nowhere near to Fukushima's. They said it would have taken 88 hours for the heat produced by the fuel to boil away the cooling water. Workers restored cooling in about 90 minutes, and plant officials said the temperature in the pool only increased by two degrees. The fire, reported at 9:30 am, led to the loss of electrical power for the system that circulates cooling water through the spent fuel pool, according to a report from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. A chemical fire suppression system discharged, and the plant's fire brigade cleared smoke from the room and reported that the fire was out at 10:20 am, the NRC said. EGYPT Nuclear Reactor Leaking ( Nebraska Nuke Plant Flooding) 06 June 2011 The Anshas nuclear reactor, located on the outskirts of Cairo, has leaked ten cubic meters of radioactive water for the second time in a year, according to Samer Mekheimar, the former director of the Nuclear Research Center's atomic reactions department. Mekheimar submitted a note to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, saying the leakage took place on 25 May as a result of operating the reactor without taking into account safety precautions. He also said the Atomic Energy Agency kept the incident secret and threatened to fire the staff if they talked about it. "The fact that the reactor was by mere chance not operated the next day saved the area from environmental disaster," he wrote. "All ministries were changed after the revolution, except the Ministry of Electricity and Energy," he added. "It still kept the same minister and his deputies from the dissolved ruling party." Meanwhile, sources at the Nuclear Safety Authority said they were denied entry to the reactor to conduct an inspection. Director of the Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed al-Kolaly, said that levels of radiation inside the reactor are normal, and that the International Atomic Energy Agency has praised the reactor hisz.rsoe.hu Egypt nuclear reactor to begin operation this month Saturday Jun 4, 2011 - 17:06 english.youm7.com Fort Calhoun, NE -- OPPD declares notification of unusual event at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Station. www.action3 Neb. nuke plant declares emergency due to flooding www ...
Breaking News! 6-27-11 Nebraska Nuclear Plant Fort Calhoun SWAMPED as Flood Berm Collapses A berm at a nuclear power plant in Fort Calhoun, Neb., collapsed early Sunday morning, allowing Missouri River flood waters to reach containment buildings and transformers and forcing the shutdown of electrical power. Now, backup generators are cooling the nuclear material at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station. Still the Cover up and blackout continues. AS they learned from TEPCO "lie lie lie" till you can lie any more then lie again. As long as you can pour tons of money to the lobbyist pockets you wont have to worry about the truth ever getting out to the American public. It seems like this has become the norm around the globe with Japan setting the example and America following along. according to reports, but the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission said cooling of the reactor and spent-fuel pool continued. The Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station 19 miles north of Omaha has been shut since early April for refueling. There's no flood water inside the plant, but water surrounded the auxiliary and containment buildings, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission said, according to the Associated Press. The plant's power supply was cut after water surrounded the main electrical transformers, the AP report said, but emergency generators powered the plant until an off-site power supply was connected Sunday afternoon.

How Would Nebraskans Be Affected By A Nebraska Nuclear Plant Meltdown? (March 17, 2011) I cannot find one news video about the current potential Nebraska flood nuclear situation, but I found this story from March 17, 2011 during the height of the Fukushima crisis. ..... Current story Nebraska nuclear reactor dry though surrounded by flood Jun 17, 2011 (Reuters) - The Fort Calhoun nuclear power station in Nebraska remains shut down due to Missouri River flooding, but the plant itself has not flooded and is expected to remain safe, the federal government said Friday. The rising river "has certainly affected the site, but the plant itself, the actual reactor is still dry," said Scott Burnell, Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman. The 478-megawatt plant north of Omaha shut April 9 to refuel, and has remained shut because of the flooding, said Omaha Public Power District spokesman Jeff Hanson. "When the river reaches 1004 feet above mean sea level, we shut down," said Hanson. "We don't have any idea when we'll be able to start again." The Missouri River, swollen by heavy rains and melting snow, has been flooding areas from Montana through Missouri. Residents have been shoring up levees around towns as federal officials widen flood gates to allow record or near-record water releases to ease pressure on reservoirs. The Fort Calhoun station is owned and operated by the Omaha Public Power District and supplies power to Nebraska's largest city. Contractors at the plant have completed construction of an earthen berm around the plant's switch yard and are protecting ...

Missouri River Breaks Flood Records In Nebraska And Iowa, Pilot Takes Aerial Pictures Fort Calhoun Power Station near Omaha Nebraska is going to flood, this was the water they did not need upstream ..... NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — Two more Missouri River flood records have been broken in southeast Nebraska, and more records are likely to fall because the amount of water being released upstream is increasing. The National Weather Service says records from 1993 were surpassed Tuesday at Plattsmouth and Nebraska City. Last weekend, Brownville also set a record. The Army Corps of Engineers is increasing the amount of water released from Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota this week, so the river will rise even more in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. The corps estimates the river will rise as much as a foot over its already high levels at Sioux City, Iowa. The river will rise roughly 3 to 5 inches from Omaha to Rulo, and it will surge about 8 inches higher at Kansas City. The Fort Calhoun nuclear power station in Fort Calhoun, Neb., is surrounded by flood waters from the Missouri River, Tuesday, June 14, 2011. On Tuesday, the releases at Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota hit the maximum planned amount of 150000 cubic feet of water per second, which are expected to raise the Missouri River 5 to 7 feet above flood stage in most of Nebraska and Iowa.

The Huskers first win against Oklahoma in 8 years. ------------------------------------- LINCOLN, Neb. -- No matter how ugly, a victory against Oklahoma is always special for Nebraska. Just ask Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini. "I've had some great ones, but this ranks right up there," Nebraska's second-year coach said. Matt O'Hanlon had three of the Huskers' five interceptions against Landry Jones, and they squeezed enough production out of their struggling offense to beat Oklahoma (No. 24 BCS, No. 20 AP) 10-3 on Saturday night. Nebraska snapped a four-game losing streak against its longtime rival. "That game could have gone a lot of different ways, and we just found a way to hang in there and hang in there, and we made enough plays to win the football game," Pelini said. The Sooners (5-4, 3-2 Big 12) failed to score a touchdown for the first time since a 29-0 loss to Texas A&M in 1998. The Sooners had 325 total yards, but they moved inside the Nebraska 20 just once, turned over the ball three times on downs, missed two field goals and had another one blocked. Then there were those interceptions. Nebraska picked off five passes in a game for the first time since 2003 against Texas A&M, and O'Hanlon became the first Huskers player since 1979 to intercept three ...

In selecting novice Marie van Goethem as his model, Degas violated accepted artistic practices of portraying prima ballerinas in performance settings. The candid pose of a common (ordinary) dancer, adorned with a real hair ribbon and fabric tutu created public outrage - some calling her an ape-like affront to society. But Degas was clearly pioneering modern sculpture with his progressive creation. It's an art treasure of Nebraska at Joslyn Art Museum.

Nebraska's Hannah Werth and Volleyball Growing up, Hannah Werth used to have a simple goal. "Volleyball, I just really like to jump and hit the ball when I started, to be really honest," Werth said. Now, the Husker sophomore knows the game isn't so simple. "As I got older I realized that volleyball is a very skilled sport and to develop every one of those skills is very important. Not just being able to hit a ball hard, but I'm still learning, shots and defense and service feeds, settings, serving, I'm still improving all those skills," Werth said. She's still improving, but her freshman campaign in Lincoln was good enough for 2009 Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors and six Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors while playing outside hitter. "Very rarely will a freshman ever start at Nebraska, because if we're doing our job and training our players that unless there's a unique situation for a freshman to come in, but Hannah was ready to come in and play as a freshman...She's a well-rounded player, she does all the skills well. It's hard to find players now that can terminate the ball, that can pass, play defense, serve, and block. And I think Hannah is in a very select group of outside hitters in this conference that can do that, put up good numbers. She's definitely a five-tool volleyball player, that's one of the reasons we wanted to recruit her, we felt like we really needed her...we call her a five-skill player, she has all the five skills really well," Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook said. High praise from ...

Nebraska Nuke Plant Waters Breach Berm at Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station .mp4 A Nuclear Plant's Flood Defenses Trigger a Yearlong Regulatory Confrontation, If the government sends The head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to a site this is serious situation. The head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been dispatched to a nuclear power plant in Fort Calhoun, Neb., where a berm collapsed Sunday, but the public is in no danger, officials said. The breach allowed Missouri River flood waters to reach containment buildings and transformers and forcing the shutdown of electrical power. Backup generators are cooling the nuclear material at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station. The plant has not operated since April, and officials say there is no danger to the public. Jeff Hanson, a spokesman for the Omaha Public Power District, told The Associated Press that the breached berm wasn't critical to protecting the plant, although a crew will look at whether it can be patched. "That was an additional layer of protection we put in," Hanson said. Nevertheless, federal inspectors are on the scene. Meanwhile, there was no protecting thousands of homes in Minot, ND, where flooding of the Souris River hit its peak today, flooding more than 4000 homes, including Leslie Dull's. Woollen Quadruplets' 1st Birthday - The Nebraska Medical Center Quadruplets born at The Nebraska Medical Center who are believed to be the worlds youngest set of surviving quadruplets, born at 23 weeks gestation, are celebrating a major milestone. This month, the Woollen quadruplets sons Brett, Kaden and Cooper and daughter Parker are celebrating their first birthday. "It has been the craziest, but also the best year of our lives," said Lee and Rachel Woollen of Holdrege, Neb., the proud parents of the healthy quadruplets who have beaten all odds. "They were our miracle babies and now they've made it through their first year of life with few complications." The quadruplets were born Feb. 11, 2008, about four months prematurely. Each baby spent four months or more in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at The Nebraska Medical Center before being released from the hospital. I read stories all the time of babies born prematurely and theyre very sick, said Rachel Woollen. Its amazing that all weve had to deal with since weve taken the babies home from the hospital is a few viral infections and respiratory colds. We feel very blessed. Ann Anderson-Berry, MD, neonatologist at The Nebraska Medical Center said the babies have surpassed all expectations. They truly are miracles, she said. Their remarkable outcome is quite an achievement. Dr. Anderson-Berry credits the parents strength, prenatal caregivers and the excellent NICU staff. The infants were able to take advantage of being born in a NICU with state-of-the-art facilities and the ...

Radiation Poisoning Fire at Flooded Nebraska Nuke Plant Leads to Level 4 Emergency uploaded from Forbidden Knowledge TV Daily videos from the edges of science Thanks Alex!! A fire in an electrical switch room on Tuesday, June 9 briefly knocked out cooling for a pool holding spent nuclear fuel at the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant outside Omaha, Neb., plant officials said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Back in January 2010, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission cited the plant for failure to maintain procedures for combatting a significant flood, as previously recommended. The plant is now engulfed in flood waters, which are expected to rise five more feet. Fairewinds Associates' Arnie Gundersen says that the plant is built to sustain current flooding but if any one of several surrounding dams breach, it could cause a Midwestern tsunami and lead to a situation similar to the Fukushima disaster, as there are several years' worth of very radioactive spent fuel rods in the cooling pools. That's just the tip of the iceberg... If Any of Several Local Dams Breach, It'll Be Another Tsunami..." IRM's Beautiful Nebraska Zephyr This video was shot on May 30, 2010. By far, the most impressive train at Illinois Railway Museum is the Nebraska Zephyr, which ran on the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. Pulled by a rare EMC E-5 (only one left in existence), the "Train of the Gods" is a complete train set consisting of lightweight cars. There is nothing like this anywhere else in the US On select weekends throughout the years, IRM brings the train out and gives rides. Although we didn't ride the train, we did a bit of chasing. It really is amazing to see, and I highly recommend planning to see it if you are in the area! Also included in this video is a pair of Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin interurban cars. I hope you enjoy the video! Don't forget to check out other videos from that weekend: And check out the photos, too:
