  • Chemistry: Naming Cations & Understanding Nomenclature Naming chemical compounds can be tricky, and requires a little bit of knowledge about the trends and naming conventions. First, Professor Harman explains that how you name a compound will depend on the type of compound - whether it is an ion, molecular compound, acid, or base. For ions, the way you name the ion will depend on whether the compound is a cation or anion and whether or not it is monatomic, polyatomic, or a transition metal. Anions follow slightly more difficult naming conventions. Molecular compounds use Greek prefixes and will always start with the element furthest from Fluorine. Some molecular compounds have common names (such as water), and these are always used. Bases are simply named like ionic materials. Acids are named based on the suffix of the anion they are derived from. If the anion ends in -ate, the acid uses an -ic suffix. If the anion ends in -ite, the acid uses an -ous suffix. Taught by Professor Harman, this lesson was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Chemistry. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. The full course can be found at The full course covers atoms, molecules and ions, stoichiometry, reactions in aqueous solutions, gases, thermochemistry, Modern Atomic Theory, electron configurations, periodicity, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, bonding theory, oxidation-reduction reactions, condensed phases, solution properties, kinetics, acids and bases, organic reactions ...

  • The American DJ "What's In A Name" Video Contest! Musicians get emotional about their instruments; DJs feel the same way about their lighting and audio gear. So, just like BB King named his favorite guitar "Lucille" and Eric Clapton played his beloved "Brownie" Stratocaster in the '70s, DJs have come up with affectionate pet names for their lighting and audio gear. The aim of this contest is to get DJs to share some of their pet names for American DJ lighting products and American Audio gear, and recount the stories behind those names in short (3 minute or less) videos. Entering is simple: just submit a video of no longer than 3 minutes in length, sharing the story behind your favorite American DJ or American Audio product. If you don't currently have an American DJ or American Audio product with a name, you can still enter the contest by sharing the name that you would give your dream American DJ or American Audio product if you owned it. You do not have to purchase that product to participate in this contest. So go ahead, let your imagination run wild, and share the stories behind the names you've given (or would like to give) the cooled DJ gear around! How The Contest Works: Contestants are invited to submit videos about the pet name they have given a specific American DJ lighting product or American Audio product. The videos, which must be 3 minutes or shorter in length, should tell the story behind how the equipment got its name. The videos can include lighting, music and sound/visual props. All material must be in ...

  • Katrina Kaifs real name is Katrina Turquotte Times of India recently interviewed wife of Jackie Shroff where they asked her lot about her marriage life with Jackie, relationship with husband post home production Boom and investment in Sony. A set of questions were related to Katrina Kaif and what she disclosed was eye catching, she said that Katrina Kaif is not the real name of Katrina Kaif. Ayesha Shroff disclosed that she met Katrina at a party once and they just greeted each other. Ayesha casted her in the movie Boom but Katrina had an English surname, which was not easy to pronounce. She is not Katrina Kaif originally. She is Katrina Turquotte. It seems the producers wanted to give her a surname which would be accepted by the Indian audience. So they thought of naming her Katrina Kazi, but then Kazi would have a religious overtone. So, finally Kaif was decided. Ayesha Shroff also confirmed the news by mentioning the fact that her name on her passport that time was Katrina Turquotte. Apparently, Katrina Kaif is not the only who has changed her name. ***y bombshell Mallika Sherawats original name is Rima Lamba, Sherlyn Chopras real name is Mona Chopra and list goes ontake a look!
