The power (and joy) of collective culture Mel Orr's story about the SIDS death of their third child and the differences between Hearing and Deaf people's responses to this event and how they showed their support to the family illustrates the difference between individualistic and collective cultures, as well as the benefits that collectivism holds for individuals, communities, and American society. The risks of learning ASL as a first language Transcript: In Mike McConnell's blog, he's looking for the "risks" of learning ASL as a first language. I sent in my comment, and he decided not to publish my comment. I will not be discussing that here. (Interrupted by bout of coughing) (drinks water) That feels better. What I said are the risks of learning ASL: 1) Hearing Parents and other family members will have to learn another language. That's terrible! Here in America, people know only one language. We can't have people learning more than one language! 2) Deaf children and parents will enjoy a closer bond (can't have that in our American society, with its increasing alienation between people! We can't promote closeness!) 3) Deaf children will understand what's going on around the dinner table and at family gatherings (no more "Family Dog Syndrome") 4) Deaf people will attain full linguistic competency in a language (putting a lot of SLPs and psychologists out of work) 5) Deaf people will attain age-appropriate cognitive, academic and linguistic skills (laying waste to a whole system which pathologizes Deaf people, requiring IEPs, SSI, VR, and so on. There will be no need for any of those services). 6) Deaf people will have enhanced cognitive skills and mental flexibility as a result of knowing two or more languages. (We can't have that. We have to restrict people to using only a limited portion of their minds). 7) Finally, Deaf people will stop grumbling about recollected abuses, problems, audism, and the like ...

Novelist Cynthia Kraack reveals the secrets of 'Ashwood' (1 of 3) Visions of the future tend not to be too hopeful. And I, being a generally optimistic, positive thinking fellow, don't often go down rabbit holes that lead to nattering nabobs of negativity. I encounter enough of it in the normal course of daily business — why look for trouble? But I got sucked into Cynthia Kraack's new small press novel, Ashwood. "Go to Hell, Nattering Nabobs!"?

Away From A Manger (The Zimmermaniacs Version) Other Video Away From A Manger: The NeoNats Requiem About 40 years ago the Republicans fussed and fumed mightily against "the Nattering Nabobs of Negativism". Then, a year or two ago some "NeoCon" dirty-trickster decided that the best way for the Republicans to be the Opposition Party was to oppose absolutely everything to make the Democrats look ineffective to naive observers and suddenly, instead of hating the Nattering Nabobs, they became the New Nattering Nabobs -- or, to be trendy about it, the NeoNats. In hopes that it will be needed soon, we offer this requiem for the NeoNats. The key realization is that politics isn't the art of the possible, it's the sullen craft of the legislatable, so when nothing gets legislated right because one party is zealously committed to trying to make the other party look bad political progress is impossible. The hope is to combat the Ranting Rightists who sit around chuckling to themselves that voters can be conned into thinking ill of the running prowess of a horse they themselves have hamstrung, of course.... This is the Zimmermaniacs version; ie, for people who don't mind Bob (ne' Zimmerman) Dylan's voice because the words appeal to them. Provided he gets his recording hardware fixed in time, there will also be a Professional version, by a real live folksinger old friend, who happens to be the only known MIT graduate to have appeared on the Grand Old Opry -- unlike the current nonsinger, who happens to be the second known MIT graduate to have ...

Dance of the Hooves In December 2007, polo made a comeback on the Calcutta greens, after four long years, thanks to the efforts of industrialist, Keshab Bangur and the Calcutta Polo Club. What had become synonymous with the city's cherished winter socials and is one of the oldest polo playing centres in the world is hopefully back on track. Here's a tribute to, what is befittingly called, 'the Game of Nabobs'!

Nattering Nabobs of Negativity I never fail to be amazed at the shallowness, pettiness, and negativity of a certain group of detractors who try to claim that Deaf activists are divisive, exclusive, closed-minded, and just about everything short of cannibals and mass murderers......

The FCC is audist! In a recent conversation with an interpreter friend, I found out that VRS interpreters have to use sign with VRS customers, even if the customer themselves do not know any sign language. I found this to be interesting, and in this vlog, I explore the ramifications of this decision by the FCC.

Winter In CT Matt the Smigiel, everyone's favorite collector of vintage party hats and Colchester nabobs, creates yet again another video of grandiose joy and rhythmic FUNK about his joyous and wholly holy holly back home for Christmas in the year of our Lord 2008. There's wrestling, there's Santa Claus impersonation, the greatest "That's What She Said" this world will ever know, and of course family.

The Ballad of Alan Grayson Quick, rough version of a song I wrote for Dem Rep Alan Grayson of Florida.. I might try an updated version if he wins re-election and I have more time.. The actual song starts about 90 seconds into the video.. Speaking Intro: " I'm not a witch! I'm a warlock.. I'm me.. No, I'm not a warlock.. I live about 20 minutes from Christine O'Donnell's headquarters.. My name's Davy and I'm a songwriter-aholic.. That's a play on words.. I like to write songs.. I play with a band in Delaware. I play bass and guitar and ccasionally they let me try to sing a song or two. I wanted to write a song for Democratic Rep Alan Grayson, he's from the 8th district in Florida.. I like his attitude, he's got a lot of spunk, not afraid to speak his mind, not beholden to the giant corporations or Wall Street.. I have voted for Republicans before, might again for the right person, but they've been very disappointing the past couple of years to a lot of us. If all the Democrats had the intestinal fortitude of Alan their outlook for the upcoming elections and for the country might be much brighter.. I started this song a while back and I wanted to get it up before the election tho I don't think it'll have any effect on the election.. For what it's worth..... ********************************************************************** THE ACTUAL SONG - THE BALLAD OF ALAN GRAYSON King of wild Capitol Hill He was born in New York city Home to the Knicks and the Yankees He went off to Harvard got a degree And ...
