"Walking" myosin molecule Myosin molecules move about actin filaments and cause cells to move using a "power stroke" (aka the "lever-arm swing") motion reminiscent of a caterpillar walking along a twig. The additive effect of countless myosin molecules pulling on actin filaments ultimately causes our muscles to contract. The physics of this interaction has previously been limited to speculation based on protein signatures, hypothetical models, and static images of the proteins. Skeletal Muscle Demo Demonstration of some of the biochemical mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle contraction. Calcium ions bind to troponin causing a change in shape of tropomyosin. This exposes myosin binding protein on actin. If a nearby myosin head is already ***ed, binding to the myosin binding molecule triggers contraction of the myosin head, pulling the actin molecule. ATP binding to the contracted myosin head causes it to release from the myosin binding molecule and re***. If another myosin binding protein is nearby, the cycle repeats. If there is no ATP available to trigger the release of the myosin head, the muscle remains in a contracted state, as in rigor mortis.

Myosin V molecular motor In living systems, molecules called molecular motors convert chemical energy into mechanical motion, and are essential for many life processes including intracellular transport, cell division, and muscle contraction. Myosin V is a type of molecular motor that transports cargo through cells by "walking" along filaments. In contrast to human-made motors, molecular motors operate in an environment where fluctuations due to Brownian motion are significant. Ongoing experimental and theoretical research is aimed at understanding the mechanism by which molecular motors achieve coordinated, directed motion in a thermal environment.
