  • Lab with CNM (centronuclear myopathy) plays in snow, Part 2, starring Noodle Noodle, a rescued purebred yellow Labrador retriever with centronuclear myopathy (CNM), romps around the ranch after a snowstorm. This debilitating congenital defect causes extreme muscle weakness and fatigue. Accompanying defects include hip and knee dysplasia, which Noodle has, and megaesophagus, which we've minimized thus far. As you can see from his activity, a dog with this condition can make a great pet to a supportive caretaker. Noodle has come a long way. As a puppy, he couldn't hold his head up, control his tongue, hold a tug toy, walk for more than a few feet without having to crawl, or climb stairs. Noodle is the product of bad breeders in Soap Lake, WA. Ethical breeders perform inexpensive (seriously--it's super cheap and easy) genetic testing on prospective sires and dames and prevent any carriers of this double-recessive trait from ever generating new puppies. Any dog that's a carrier should be altered, but unethical, lazy, and greedy breeders (such as backyard breeders and puppy mills) will simply give buyers a new pup if one from a litter is returned, and then kill or dump the defective pup. Are you considering adding a Labrador retriever to your own pack? Shelters are full of young Labs and Lab mixes. Please consider adoption or rescue. If you want to purchase a purebred puppy, please do your research ahead of time. Puppy mills and backyard breeders are the reasons that tragic health defects like CNM persist today. Thank you, and have a Doodle-y day!

  • Updated Safety Information for Crestor (May 2005) FDA recently provided health care practitioners and patients with updated information about the risks and benefits of Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium), a cholesterol-lowering drug made by Astra-Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. Crestor, like all other statins, has been associated with rhabdomyolysis. The incidence of this effect is low, and the risk of serious muscle damage doesn't appear to be greater for Crestor than for other statins. But as with all statins, the risk of myopathy increases with higher drug levels. So Crestor's labeling has been changed to re-emphasize the risk of myopathy, particularly at the highest approved dose of 40 mg. The labeling also stresses the need to consider using lower starting doses in some patients. This may be particularly important when treating Asian Americans, since a large pharmacokinetic study found that this group of patients had drug levels about twice as high as a Caucasian control group, and that could increase their risk for myopathy. The revised labeling now recommends that the 5 mg dose of Crestor be considered as the starting dose for Asian-Americans, and also for others with predisposing factors for myopathy, including patients on cyclosporine and those with severe renal insufficiency.

  • Progressive Leg Muscle Weakness Reversed With Natural Therapies Jim Regan developed progressive weakness in the legs over the course of the prior year. Before starting treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy and Proximal Myopathy he couldn't rise up from a chair without using his arms. He also could not climb stairs in a normal right leg-left leg fashion. A severe vitamin D deficiency was discovered. This has been known to cause a type of muscle weakness known as Proximal Myopathy and Peripheral Neuropathy. He was also on a Statin Drug to lower cholesterol which can also cause these conditons in some individuals. 10 weeks of treatment using Pulsed Infrared Light Therapy, Cox Spinal Decompression Adjustments, Functional Nutrition, and Whole Body Vibration Therapy has resulted in a remarkable functional improvement of the involved muscles and nerves.
  • Muscle Injury from High Doses of Zocor FDA is informing healthcare professionals that a preliminary review of a large clinical trial shows an increased risk of muscle injury in patients taking the highest dose of the statin drug simvastatin. Simvastatin is sold as Zocor, and is also an ingredient in Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin) and Simcor (niacin extended-release/simvastatin). Myopathy is a known side-effect of all statin drugs, as is rhabdomyolysis, a potentially life-threatening type of myopathy. The higher the statin dose, the greater the risk of developing myopathy or rhabdomyolysis. The clinical trial showed that the risk of myopathy is much higher in patients taking 80 mg of simvastatin, which is the highest approved dose, than in those taking 20 mg. The risk of myopathy is also increased when simvastatin is used with certain other medications. In fact, simvastatin should be avoided in people taking certain drugs, and there are specific dose limits when it's prescribed with other drugs. FDA will continue to evaluate other sources of information to further define the risk of myopathy from high doses of simvastatin, and will share this information with practitioners and the public as soon as it is available. In the meantime, when deciding to use simvastatin, practitioners should consider the drug's potential risks and known benefits compared to other cholesterol-lowering therapies. Before prescribing simvastatin, prescribers should carefully review the patient's medications for potential drug-drug ...

  • Meet Chico, my Labrador with Centronuclear Myopathy This is Chico, also known as Chief. Chico is a Labrador Retriever, and at first glance he looks like the picture-perfect example of the breed. Isnt he so handsome?? But unfortunately Chico is affected by a genetic disorder in purebred Labs called centronuclear myopathy (CNM). CNM has gone by many names since its appearance in the 1970s, most commonly Muscular Myopathy of the Labrador, but also muscular dystrophy, myotonia, generalized muscle weakness, polyneuropathy, and hereditary myopathy. Generally, dogs with CNM seem normal as young pups, but may grow slower and be lazier than the other pups in the litter. Around 3-5 months of age, the dog will start to show definite signs of the disease. The symptoms are bunny-hopping, walking differently, stumbling and falling often, and in the worst cases, inability to hold up their head. They also have difficulty swallowing, and sometimes inhale or choke on their food. The symptoms never go away or get better. Luckily Chicos case in particular is fairly mild, but if you look closely you can see how it has affected him. In these pictures, you can see that he doesnt lie on his back legs, but rather with them sprawled off to one side. You can clearly see that he is missing a lot of muscle mass in his back legs. Its also pronounced in his chest, as you can see in these pictures. With centronuclear myopathy the skeletal muscle fibers dont develop properly. Since the missing muscle fibers will never develop, you cant just beef up a dog ...
