  • cop murders 6 kids, then commits suicide The perpetrator, 20-year-old Tyler Peterson, who was a full-time deputy in the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer at the Crandon Police Department, shot and killed six people and critically injured a seventh before committing suicide. One of the victims, 18-year-old Jordanne Michele Murray, was Peterson's former girlfriend, and it was believed the dispute within the apartment motivated the shooting. Tyler James Peterson, a 20-year-old full-time deputy in the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time police officer at the Crandon Police Department, who was not on duty, entered an apartment complex where a homecoming party was held at approximately 2:45 am CDT, and shot at seven people, ages 14 to 20, killing six of them and wounding the seventh. The gunman was later killed, initially believed to have been killed by a police sniper, but it was later discovered that he committed suicide by multiple gunshots, with the third shot being the fatal one. Police have determined that approximately 30 rounds were fired throughout the duration of the shooting. All seven victims were either students or recent graduates of Crandon High School. The seventh victim, Charles Neitzel, played dead after being shot three times and survived, despite being critically injured. The case was cold for 23 years, although the victims father, Nels Rasmussen, always suspected that Lazarus killed his daughter. At the time, Sherri Rasmussen was newly married to Lazarus ex-boyfriend, and authorities suspect it may have been a crime of passion. According to the LA Times, Nels claimed Lazarus threatened his daughter in the months before her murder, telling her If I cant have John, nobody can. On Feb. 24, 1986, Sherris husband returned to their condominium and found his wifes body on the living room floor. She was beaten badly, had several bite marks, and had been shot multiple times. The couples marriage license had also been stolen from the condo. Two men who had robbed a woman in the area at gunpoint were the lead suspects. Sherris parents offered a $10000 reward for the mens capture, but a search for the men led nowhere, and the case went cold. Back then, the LAPD were dismissive of the requests of Sherris parents to have Lazarus investigated. Fast forward to 2009 when DNA evidence can narrow down the suspects. After testing Sherris bite marks for DNA, it came back female, which then prompted detectives to obtain a DNA sample from Lazarus. Stephanie Lazarus was arrested Friday at police headquarters, and is being held without bail. Her arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday and if convicted, she could face the death penalty.

  • Mexico's new murder capital Three years after President Felipe Calderon launched an all-out nationwide war against drug cartels in Mexico, narcotics-related violence is still on the rise in the city of Ciudad Juarez. Although around 10000 troops have been deployed in the city, on average 10 people are killed each day there. According to the El Universal newspaper, last year more than one-third of Mexico's murders were in Juarez. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports that residents of the city now known as Mexico's new "murder capital" are putting pressure on politicians to act against a business that earns yearly revenues of $20bn. That's a sum of money more than enough to buy the loyalties of police and judges. Critics say that one of the biggest problems in Juarez is that attackers act with immunity. In the last two years more than 4000 people have been killed and only 300 cases resolved. Knowing that, many attackers just shoot and kill without any fear of getting caught. [February 11, 2010]
