The Spacecraft Charge Monitor is designed to determine spacecraft charge (electrostatic charge) through high energy-resolution electron spectroscopy. The demonstration was recorded in the Goembel Instruments laboratory in December, 2009. The engineering model of the flight-ready Spacecraft Charge Monitor (SCM) is installed in a vacuum chamber so that it will function as it would in outer space. Electrons are produced by a simple electron and 'beamed' at the SCM with energies from 18 eV to 28 eV. The SCM, through its RS-422 interface, is commanded to gather a 200 point, 10 eV wide (18-28 eV) spectrum once each second and the resulting spectrum is displayed, in real time, on the laptop screen. What is not shown is the housekeeping data that is also transmitted from the SCM that includes SCM circuit board temperature, monitored voltages at electrostatic surfaces, etc. As the intensity (flux) of the electron beam is increased, the peak display in the spectra gathered by the SCM increases.
